Trustees Approve New Budget For FY2020
The Alamo Colleges District’s Board of Trustees recently approved the district’s budget for 2019-2020, totaling $385.2 million. The district’s new budget year begins September 1, 2019. The overall goal of the budget is to position the Alamo Colleges for "smart growth," which makes the most effective use of every dollar of revenue to support the economic and social mobility of the members of our community and the success of our students. To achieve this goal, the board is heavily investing in two main areas: direct student support at the colleges; and support for talent across the district. A total of $9.5 million was earmarked for student support, with $9.2 million committed to support for talent.
Construction Underway On Multiple Bond Projects Across The District
Construction is underway on multiple building projects across the district, funded by the $450 million bond issue approved by voters in 2017. Groundbreakings have been held for: the new Culinary Arts Center of Excellence at St. Philip’s College and renovation of the Norris Technical Building; the Welcome Center, parking garage and physical plant improvements at Northwest Vista College; and the Early Childhood Center, John L. Santikos Micronauts Center, physical plant improvements and an additional parking garage at San Antonio College.
San Antonio College Mariachis Win Top Honors In Albuquerque
San Antonio College’s (SAC) mariachi group,  Mariachi Estrellas del Alamo , won top honors at the annual Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque, a three-day conference and competition held in New Mexico. This is the second year in a row the 16-piece ensemble has won first place in the College/University category. The student musicians came up with the concept to perform a potpourri of music made famous by legendary Mexican singer Vicente Fernandez.
St. Philip's College Partners With Spurs For Etiquette Tea
St. Philip’s College (SPC) celebrated its eighth annual Etiquette Tea with Spurs Sports & Entertainment. Dr. Adena Williams Loston, SPC President, and women in campus leadership positions hosted an afternoon tea party for 30 girls from the Boys & Girls Club of San Antonio Eastside Branch and SPC KIDS’ Academy and discussed table and social etiquette.
Northwest Vista College Students Study Stateside
Eight students and two Northwest Vista College faculty members participated in an inaugural Study Stateside trip this past May. Students earned six course credit hours touring and engaging in cultural public history across the United States. Trip destinations included stops in New Orleans, LA, Montgomery, AL, Charlottesville, VA, Washington D.C. and Chicago, IL.
