Kristen Turns Despair into Hope
By the time Eli was a year old, Kristen knew something was off.
"He had severe issues," said Kristen. "By the time he was in Kindergarten we were in 'crisis' mode. We couldn't make it through one day of school without an episode."
Eli (now 13-years-old) was not only violent, but also homicidal and suicidal. He did short-term and long-term hospital stays, which helped determine the best medication for him, but his erratic behaviors did not completely go away.
They were referred to Highfields' Multisystemic Therapy program, which is an intensive family and community-based treatment that focuses on the environmental systems that impact juvenile offenders.
With the support of Highfields' MST Therapist, Eric Moor, they made significant progress for the first time.
Rozanne Becomes A Parent Again
Rozanne and her husband, Mike, have been raising their grandson, Jaxxon, since he was seven months old. They were excited about the opportunity, but also apprehensive because of their age and Jaxxon's special needs.
Jaxxon has challenges with his speech, and sensory issues with textures. He is sensitive to certain clothing and dislikes bathing and brushing his teeth. They had him tested for Autism and the doctors felt he had more of an emotional impairment. As a result, they were referred to Highfields' Home-Based Therapy program.
Highfields' counselor, Ruth Vanderpool-Combs, came into their home and also visited Jaxxon's school. She observed his behaviors and worked with Rozanne, Mike and Jaxxon's teachers to create a support system. They work together as a team to figure out the best solutions for Jaxxon's unique needs.
