Valentines Day Festivities
Last Friday, our students celebrated Valentines Day with their classmates. The preK/K students had a celebration complete with valentines for parents. The 1st-4th graders enjoyed treats and a game of musical valentines, and our 5th/6th grade students learned the story of St. Valentine in Latin class and exchanged cards.

Miracle on Ice

In one of the most dramatic upsets in Olympic history, a young 1980 U.S. hockey team beat the Soviet veteran, undefeated powerhouse to move on to the final round and win Olympic gold.  Their victory over our Cold War enemy was a sorely needed celebration for an American populace disheartened by a major recession, gas rationing, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the Iran hostage crisis. The game was a unique moment in history when even the most disinterested sports watcher joined millions of fans to root for our unlikely champions.

Miracle, starring Kurt Russell - a perfect movie for this cold Sunday, February 22nd to commemorate the 35th anniversary of our big win!


"Post hoc, ergo propter hoc" - It means "after this, therefore on account of it," referring to the common mistake in logic that one thing caused another just because it happened first. 

An example of this flawed reasoning is to argue that the rooster's crowing causes the sun to rise.  It was Aristotle who laid the groundwork for classifying bad arguments based on errors in logic like this one.

The Untold Story of the Declaration of Independence

Surely most educated adults are aware of Thomas Jefferson's role in drafting our first founding document, but who else participated in the seminal events that led to our break from England?  What repercussions did they suffer?
...with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutualy pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
What did the 56 signers of the Declaration mean by these words?  What personal sacrifices did they make and how did their families fare after signing this document?

One of the poems the preK/K students will study during the next two weeks is a beautiful bedtime poem by American poet, Eugene Fields, called Wynken, Blynken and Nod.  Here is the first verse. Can you guess what Wynken, Blyken and Nod are?

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe,- 
Sailed on a river of crystal light
Into a sea of dew. 
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?" 
The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring-fish 
That live in this beautiful sea; 
Nets of silver and gold have we," 
Said Wynken, 
And Nod.
Saxon Mathematics

Our mathematics curriculum is Saxon Mathematics.  The goal of our mathematics study is content mastery which Saxon demands in its incremental approach. Once a concept is introduced, it is not forgotten.  All the concepts are incorporated into the problem sets students work on daily.  Through repeated exposure over the entire year, students gain understanding and mastery. In the upper grades, the mathematical concepts are introduced as rules, while in the lower grades the texts use a more hands-on conceptual approach.

At the beginning of the school year, we assess each students' abilities in order to place them in the right Saxon level.  Students who are more advanced study more challenging material, and students who need more preparation work at a lower level to get ahead.  Our goal is to ensure that all students are challenged and mastering each concept before moving to the next level. Our goal is not to push higher level skills that are not developmentally appropriate just so we can boast that our younger students can perform advanced computations.  

For example, right now most of the 5th and 6th graders have completed the Saxon 6/5 book and are moving to the 7/6 book. Some of these students have already been working in the 7/6 book, and a few advanced students will move to Algebra 1/2.  In this way, we ensure that all students are working at the appropriate skill level without rushing through concepts they are ill-prepared to master.

Aristotle's Golden Mean
5th & 6th Grade Philosophy

Our students encounter philosophy from an early age at Veritas.  While they are not yet prepared to dive deep into Nicomachean Ethics, their inquisitive minds are well suited for simplified discussions of basic philosophical themes such as right vs. wrong, truth, and justice.

This week, our 5th and 6th graders discussed Aristotle's Golden Mean theory. The philosopher set forth the origin, nature, and development of virtues which are essential to achieving happiness. (The Greek "happiness" or "eudaimonia" must not be confused with carnal or material pleasures which some equate to "happiness.") To achieve eudaimonia the person must develop habits of right conduct through continual virtuous action from an early age.  The Golden Mean, then, is the balance between extremes, which we may call "vices."

For example, at one end on the spectrum of courage is rash or reckless behavior, an excess, (the unchecked, irrational extreme of "courage"), and on the other end is the deficiency, cowardice (a complete lack of courage).  In the middle is courage, although this midpoint often depends on the circumstances as there is no universal middle.

Aristotle said, "It is easy to be angry, but to be angry at the right time, for the right reason, at the right person, and in the right intensity must truly be brilliant."
The importance of the Golden Mean is that it reaffirms the balance needed in life, rather than today's tendency toward excess.  When our students enter the upper grades they will study these philosophical themes in greater depth.  For now, they are enjoying this primer and the lively discussions that ensue from it.  Call the school if you'd like to sit in on one of Mr. Dschida's philosophy lessons.
Snow Policy

Many people have noticed that we are often open when other schools are closed.  Our inclement weather policy is simple. We try to make the most responsible and reasonable decision possible each morning.  The rest is up to parents.


We think parents know best whether it is safe to bring their kids to school.  If parents do not feel comfortable driving to school we do not penalize a student for not attending. If during the day the weather worsens and parents wish to pick up their kids, that's fine, too. 


Like you, our teachers and staff have kids in school, so we understand the difficulty of finding last-minute child care and the disruption to the work day. 


Thus far this winter, we have only been closed 2 days.
