CAP Grantee Spotlight

Play it Again Sam Theatre Troupe

CAP's "Grants for Arts Programs" (GAP Grant) supports artistic programs open to the Tompkins County general public. New York State Council on the Arts provides these funds statewide to make exemplary arts programming available to geographically, ethnically, and racially diverse segments of the State's population.

The Play it Again Sam Theatre Troupe has been a CAP grant recipient for many years! A program of Lifelong in downtown Ithaca and led by retired ICSD teacher Susan Kaplan, the group includes area seniors that come together to develop well rehearsed and entertaining theatre in choral-reading style, often based on their life experiences with a theme of their choosing. The group performs multiple times each year, including our own Spring Writes Literary Festival! Visit SpringWrites.org to find a recording of their 2025 performance. And visit contact Lifelong to find out how to join!

Two February Exhibits

Jean Gerow and Christine Stockwell

Gallery Night! Feb. 6, 5pm-8pm

Jean Gerow,

A Place to Breathe

This fiber art exhibit is a needed distraction from the world of unrest. "My goal is to give the viewer something peaceful and calm to observe and lose themselves in. We need reminders that things can be and are beautiful in nature and in life." jeangerow.com

Christine Stockwell,

Messages

This exhibit aims to be humorous, as well as invoking curiosity, some head scratching, and perhaps even discussions about how we, are constantly exposed to messages of all kinds - in words and in symbols - ones that are directed to us and sometimes to mysterious others. Cas5photo.com

Location - CAP ArtSpace

110 N. Tioga Street, Tompkins Center for History and Culture in the Ithaca College Gallery on the Commons

CAP and Ithaca Murals announce

14 New Murals across Tompkins County
CHARM Project a Beautiful Success

Mural by: Nico Cathcart at CSMA

The Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County (CAP) is proud to be a community partner in New York State’s Cultivating Havens for the Arts through Regional Murals (CHARM) program, a new initiative of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Over the last five months, CAP has partnered with Ithaca Murals (a project of the Center for Transformative Action) to bring 14 murals into fruition across the county. Together we organized 10 huge murals at SouthWorks and an enormous (50 foot tall!) mural for the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) in downtown in Ithaca as well as 3 murals in the rural areas outside of Ithaca - The Jane Minor BIPOC Community Garden in Danby, the Namaste Montessori School in Trumansburg, and a private residence in Caroline.

Megan Barber, Executive Director of the Community Arts Partnership, shares, “The Community Arts Partnership is grateful to the New York State Council on the Arts and the Office of the Governor for this infusion of resources into the artistic life of our community. It has been so exciting to see these formerly blank walls come alive with art!”

“Public art inspires and educates – it strengthens our civic pride and brings us together,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “By supporting our innovative creative sector to work with communities all across the state, CHARM will reimagine everyday public spaces as vibrant destinations for visitors and residents alike.”
