Join us for a tour of Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island,
a hidden gem in a little-known part of New York City.
The easy walk is about 1½ hours including a light lunch on site.
Most of you have probably never even heard of this New York City
cultural center and botanical garden on Staten Island.
Snug Harbor was an old sailors' home from 1801 until the mid-20th Century, funded by a shipping fortune heir. When the sailors moved out, the NYC Cultural Commission (Jackie Onassis) prevented its destruction, and it now belongs to the City, for the enjoyment of discerning people such as us.
Stroll through a gentle parkland, view Greek Revival buildings, visit a variety of floral gardens, and, most especially, tour an authentic Chinese Scholar’s Garden composed of waterfalls, pools, and temple buildings brought from China and assembled on site.
Getting there
We'll take the 9:00 train from Westport to Grand Central. We’ll then travel by NYC bus to the ferry terminal on the Hudson River at 39th Street where we will board the NYC Ferry. An exhilarating ride down the Hudson to Battery Park City and then direct to Staten Island.
Once on Staten Island, we take a city bus about 15 minutes to Snug Harbor. At Snug Harbor, we’ll stroll the grounds, sampling the gardens and viewing the buildings, and touring the Chinese Scholar’s Garden.
There is a place for light lunch food in the park.
When we have finished our tour, we’ll take the bus back to the ferry terminal, where we will board the iconic Staten Island Ferry for the ride back to Battery Park in Manhattan. From there, subway back to Grand Central.
Costs
The costs are minimal. The NYC ferry is $4.50.
The Chinese Scholar’s Garden is $4.00
And the Staten Island Ferry is free for everyone!
