So, You Call Yourself An Artist?
|
|
What happens when you introduce yourself as an artist?
Do you feel resistance or expansion?
Try it...speak the words aloud right now….”Hi, my name is ____ and I am an artist.”
What does your inner critic say about that? Are there snickers or rude noises? Notice where the statement resonates inside your body. Is it lighting up your heart center - stuck in your throat, tight in your gut, or kidneys?
What does your inner child say when you call yourself an artist? Does he/she jump up and down ready to grab the crayons or does he/she go and hide under the bed?
What does your soul say to this statement? Do you feel a calling, a longing, a contraction, or an expansion of your soul energy?
What do you and I need to do to earn the title “Artist”?
What is required for you? For many years I was held back by my personal definition that said, “An artist earns a good living by selling his/her art”. If I could not make a good living selling each piece for over $1,000 per work and if I did not produce at least 2 pieces a month then I was not worthy to call myself an “artist”, Until I could be entirely self-supporting and financially free I did not have permission to create art, nor to call myself an artist. It was an impossible goal because if I did not allow myself the time and space to learn, fail and acquire experience I could never create “saleable” art.
Think about what holds you back. What myths are you holding on to? Do you need a degree in art? Does your art have to look a certain way? Does your work need to hang in a museum? Do you need to suffer to be worthy? Do you need to create without training, effort, or struggle?
|
|
What if all you need in order to call yourself an artist is to be a person who creates things? Would that open up more freedom for you?
What if your job as an artist is to notice things and engage someone else in noticing them too?
What if your work is to be a storyteller of your own day-to-day curiosities, concerns, obsessions, and confusions as a guide to the variety and bounty of the human adventure?
Where does it say art should be limited only to serious intellectual subjects hung in galleries or museums?
What if the art we create transforms the playroom, the kitchen, the bathroom, the park, and the office into "temples” to our values?
And, if the practice of our art enhances our own self-understanding, empathy, consolation, hope, self-acceptance, and fulfillment - do we really need more than that?
|
|
Can you envision yourself better now as an artist? Are you ready to let go of those myths and limitations?
You can become anything you dream of - even an artist, at any moment.
As a child you created art with uninhibited joy and freedom to express your inner world - that feeling is still available to you.
Even if you are already comfortable owning your artistic calling, there is a way you could break through some constraints that limit your work.
Creating art that elevates the energy of your spirit is all the permission you need to claim your artistic title and power.

While almost everybody has heard of Banksy, no one knows the real identity of this famous graffiti artist. Some consider him a mere prankster, while others hail him as an artistic genius; however, no one can deny his popularity. In 2010, Time magazine selected the British artist for its list of The 100 Most Influential People in the World, joining the ranks of Barack Obama, Steve Jobs, and Lady Gaga. His work has sold for millions.
Banksy has the unique ability to express strong political statements with poetry, energy, and humor with an unnerving ability to get to the heart of the subject matter. The Art of Banksy features more than 155 of the artist’s works — Original Artworks, Prints on different kinds of materials, photos, sculptures, installations, murals, and more. Some of his works are carefully reproduced with his stencil technique, especially for the exhibition. A video documentary gives visitors insights into his life and work.
Please let me know if you are interested in joining me at this event.

Thursday Adult Group Class:
|
|
Live and In-Person!!
Starting Thursday, January 6, 2022, I will be hosting small group classes at my home studio in Plantation.
The introductory class will meet every Thursday from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. No experience is required and this group will be limited to 6 people. For the first month, I will introduce confidence-building drawing and watercolor techniques.
(Just one space left for the month of January) Please let me know if you would like it or be placed on the waitlist.
A second class for artists with some experience and comfort with their materials will meet every Thursday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. This class will move at a slightly faster pace than my evening class and is perfect for those of you with a bit of experience, who are ready for a little more challenge, or if you prefer doing more of your "own thing".
Whether your goal is to improve in drawing, portraiture, composition, watercolor, oil, or acrylic, the experience will be enjoyable and fun. You will feel nurtured and supported as you develop your ability to visually express your innermost world. You will benefit from the collegial group atmosphere and peer input on your artwork and ideas.
Everyone in our group class will be working on something different which may include different media, different subject matter, different goals, and different skill levels. Each week we will begin class with feedback on work accomplished and you will have the opportunity to articulate your intentions, successes, and failures.
The second half of the class will be devoted to supervised art creation and skill building with instant feedback and guidance. You will feel nurtured and supported as you grow. There will be weekly prompts, guided lessons on technique, exercises, and reflections.
Since everyone will be working independently, materials are not included.
Please reach out to me if this sounds like fun to you.
Details on pricing for this class are available on my website.

South Florida has an amazing variety of architecture. Miami has done a great job preserving its historic Art Deco buildings and you can join the live celebration of that era (outside) from Friday, January 14 to Sunday the 16th. Art Deco Weekend is a free community cultural festival celebrating Miami’s architecture, history, arts, and culture.
This year, the event returns in-person to Lummus Park between 5th and 15th streets along Ocean Drive.
MDPL started Art Deco Weekend in 1977 to bring attention to the beautiful Art Deco architecture along Ocean Drive. This signature event is MDPL’s largest educational outreach program of the year and a major part of the organization’s initiative to preserve, protect, and promote historic preservation in the Art Deco District and greater Miami.
Over 150,000 locals and tourists enjoy a variety of free events and activities including the artisan and antique marketplace, guided architectural tours, classic car show, lectures, films, sketch walks, kids club, dog walk, and a variety of entertaining musical events by local and national performers. All with the mission to educate the public about the Art Deco Historic District, the history and culture of Miami Beach and historic preservation.

Sketchbook Prompt:
Open your sketchbook so you have two clean pages open to you.
On the left side of your sketchbook choose an image that reflects where you ARE in your life right now. Consider: What colors or shapes speak to you? What is the mood or energy of the picture? What associations for memories surface when you look at this image? If this image could speak - what would it say? What is the picture telling you about where you are now? Listen for metaphors - if one shows up, play with it.

What is the picture telling you about where you are now? Listen for metaphors - if one shows up, play with it.

This happened in December:
|
|
I had the good fortune to attend Art Basel Miami in person this year. It is incredibly inspiring to see the work of so many famous artists in person. There are details and impressions a digital screen cannot capture.
Lark and I will be sharing our photos and talking about what we saw and what impressed us at our round table this month. I hope you will join us as we dig deeper into current shifts within the world of art.
