A Reflection from Father Perry | |
Today’s column is going to be different. Normally my comments are thematic and they usually coalesce around something that is happening in our congregation or something personal. The truth is that there are important updates that need to be shared, so I’m going to use this opportunity to convey some business and calendar information.
Last Sunday, we met to do the business of the church at our annual meeting. We had a great crowd on hand, and I am so appreciative to everyone for their participation in the proceedings.
Here is a quick recap of what happened: (some pictures on back page of the insert)
* Juliaette Chamberlain, Jack Ogden, Matt Sammon, and Susan Woodell were all elected to a three-year term on the Vestry.
* Jeremy Veatch was elected Junior Warden.
* Will Evans, Karen Feltz, Pauline Urbano Hechler, Myles Link, and Grant Washburn were elected as delegates to the diocesan convention to be held here at All Saints’ in October.
* Gary Griffith, Amanda Judah, and Cori Veatch were selected as alternate delegates to the diocesan convention.
* The 2025 budget was approved.
* At the request of the Rector, Tim Hyland and Travys Harvey will both continue in their roles as Senior Warden and Chancellor (respectively). This will be Tim’s last year as Senior Warden.
* Ken Luk and Jeff Ellish were both honored with Vestry Commendations.
* We recognized Jill Eden, Will Evans, Kevin Lentz, Irene Tseng, and Ken Mosesian who are all concluding their time on the Vestry.
In terms of events on the horizon, I wanted to remind everyone to mark their calendars for a few upcoming events.
* First, if you haven’t yet RSVP’d for our St. John’s Bible event “Illuminating the Spirit,” it’s not too late! The reception starts at 5PM on Saturday evening in the Memorial Garden and the program will begin at 5:30. Come enjoy beautiful music from our Choristers and Chamber Choir, an informative lecture by Brad Neary of St. John’s, and a great time exploring the artistry of the St. John’s Bible.
* Second, we will be celebrating the Feast of the Presentation, often called Candlemas in Anglican churches, at both Sunday services. At 10AM, we will have a special high choral mass (with incense) in honor of the Feast. Bring some candles to be blessed at either Sunday service.
* Finally, mark your calendars now for Saturday, March 1 at 5PM. We will be hosting Evensong as our Saturday evening service with special guests from the Phoenix Boys Choir joining our choir and choristers. It will be a beautiful evening of prayer and music.

In 2025, our focus is community and the reasons we all give so generously of ourselves to make All Saints' great. In the upcoming year, we have plans to expand our programs for children and youth, continue to grow our choir, and build on the strength of our outreach ministries that bring hope and peace to those who need it most. Our goal is to raise one million dollars to make this growth possible, and with God's help and your faithfulness, we will get there.

The Ragamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burnt Out
by Brennan Manning
4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 3,508 ratings
Are you bedraggled, beat-up, burnt-out?
Most of us believe in God’s grace—in theory. But somehow we can’t seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet.
Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we’ve done. We come to Him as ragamuffins—dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His “furious love.”
Brennan Manning’s now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it—simple honesty—has changed thousands of lives. Now, it will change yours, too.

This semester we will be diving into the "texts of terror" found in the Bible: the stories of hardship, pain, and sorrow, which can teach readers how to cultivate practical compassion. In the words of theologian Phyllis Trible, "Sad stories do not have happy endings...but they may yield new beginnings." Within this Bible study, students will confront hard topics, wrestle with what to do, and serve with organizations that will directly alleviate the modern day terrors faced by our community (NourishPHX, A New Leaf, St. Vincent de Paul).

I am kind of out of breath after thinking about all the events and cool stuff we are doing right now at All Saints'. So instead of trying to think of something clever or witty, I will just share a photo I took last night of one of many creatures. This one is named Owen after the character in John Irvings' book, A Prayer for Owen Meany. If you haven't read this or listened to the amazing audio book of it, you should. That's all I will say.
Here is the opening paragraph of the book, and I will add there is lots of conversation throughout about Episcopalians - what they are and what they believe.
I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice — not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. I make no claims to have a life in Christ, or with Christ — and certainly not for Christ, which I’ve heard some zealots claim. I’m not very sophisticated in my knowledge of the Old Testament, and I’ve not read the New Testament since my Sunday school days, except for those passages that I hear read aloud to me when I go to church. I’m somewhat more familiar with the passages from the Bible that appear in The Book of Common Prayer; I read my prayer book often, and my Bible only on holy days — the prayer book is so much more orderly.
