Lailah with puppies soon after rescue |
Lailah Goes Home
In December, Spay Neuter Services of Indiana (SNSI) shared the story of a poor, injured momma dog, found with her five puppies, skin and bones, in an Indianapolis cemetery.
The puppies found homes right away, but momma dog Lailah had a leg injury that required fundraising for surgery and then another surgery. After months of waiting, Lailah made the connection she'd been waiting for at the IndyMega Adoption event. A young woman spotted Lailah and it was love at first site. Now Lailah is spending her future in a loving home where she will be pampered and appreciated.

Cats at play at the Muncie animal shelter |
Saving Them All in Muncie
The official motto of Muncie is "Imagine the Possibilities When We Work Together," and in that spirit, Muncie recently passed the strongest companion animal protection law in the nation. Even before the law, Phil Peckinpaugh, Shelter Manager of Muncie Animal Care & Education Center was driven to help the community reached a 95% live release rate for dogs, 97% for cats, and 98% for rabbits and other small animals in 2016.

Phil Peckinpaugh with shelter dog |
The new law was established to ensure the success achieved in Muncie will endure. The law requires that shelter maintain at least a 90% live release rate, makes it illegal to kill healthy and treatable animals, including community cats, and requires the shelter to work with rescue groups and foster homes, among other directives. Read the full interview with Phil.

Zero Kill in Every Shelter
Indiana shelters are working to save as many dogs and cats as they possibly can. We are seeing more and more shelters achieve goals we'd only dreamed of. These five Indiana shelters serve as models by reaching or exceeding a 90% live release rate.
There's also a list for
shelters with a live release rate above 80%.
To have your shelter added to either of these lists, simply post your statistics on your web page and contact
Saving90.org
to provide them with a link to your statistics. From there, they will verify your stats and add your shelter's name to the list.
This useful guide
helps assist shelters in determining their live release rates.
For all other shelters, SNSI will continue to provide assistance until each and every Indiana shelter becomes zero kill. We're all in this together!

Protect Your Pet This Summer
Experts report that this summer will be the worst yet for ticks, likely due to the mild winters in Indiana. The Indiana State Department of Health reports that ticks in Indiana may carry Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or Ehrlichiosis.
Ticks frequently reside in tall grasses, where they can easily attach themselves to animals as they pass by. The Princeton Veterinary Clinic offers information on how to check your pet for ticks each day (especially after being outdoors). Removing ticks right away is imperative to keeping your pet safe and healthy.
