SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE!

Dear Charting Careers Friends and Family,

As our elementary, middle and high-school scholars head back to school and our graduates start new adventures away at college, we wanted to pause and THANK YOU. We could not do this life-changing work without you!

Because of your support...

  • 9 college scholars are working on undergraduate degrees made possible in part through the financial support of Charting Careers 2023 scholarships as well as scholarships obtained through the support of Charting Careers staff and volunteers;
  • 1 scholar made her high school cheerleading team and is able to participate in this wellness and extracurricular activity due to transportation provided through our organization;
  • 7 scholars received professional reading tutoring through Charting Careers throughout the summer and are making great progress;
  • 1 family in crisis received almost daily support, including assistance with housing, food, and other basic needs until they were able to get to a more stable situation, which we are thrilled came together last week; and
  • All of our scholars had meaningful summer experiences, whether at a camp, through an internship, or a job!

We are hearing from families and our broader community that our long-term, wrap around support is helping to create the village of support that is necessary to help young people thrive and reach their full potential!

Our youth also shared their feedback on a recent survey and reported that, we...

  • Helped them feel more hopeful about their future (84%);
  • Introduced them to at least one new adult they can turn to for advice and support (89%);
  • Helped them be more successful at school (89%);
  • Helped them feel more comfortable with people from different cultural/racial/ethnic backgrounds (94%);
  • Made them feel more valued by their community (94%); and
  • Provided opportunities to give back to their community through leadership and volunteer work (94%).

Thank you for being a part of the Charting Careers community which is inspiring youth to discover their power and reach their goals! Because of your support, there is SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE.

FAMILY PARTNERSHIP: ORIENTATION NIGHT

Our August 2023 Family Orientation Night was fun and productive. During this event, scholars started designing their ideal home-study spaces. Through a generous grant provided by the Parole Rotary, scholars will receive items (e.g., desk lamps, bulletin boards, organizational bins) to furnish these spaces!

A Family Night speaker spoke to the importance of planning ahead for the costs of college and trade programs and informed the crowd of an extraordinary opportunity made possible through a generous donation from the #makingadifference fund! Charting Careers has received seed money to support participating families with opening Maryland 529 accounts for their scholars! The state of Maryland then contributes $1,000 yearly to each of these accounts through the Save4College program!

HIGH SCHOOL TEAM BUILDING

In late July, Laticia Hicks, our Mentor & Volunteer Director, and Lily Cox, our new High School & Beyond Coordinator, had fun taking high school scholars to the Glen Burnie Carnival for a team building outing. Making time to have fun together and build relationships is so important to our work!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: SHARI FRIEDMAN

What's your favorite thing about volunteering at Charting Careers?

My favorite thing about volunteering is, first and foremost, the young scholars. They are bright, engaging, resilient and have limitless possibilities. I have been particularly involved in the Panther Hour program at Annapolis High School. Here, the youth are guided to set meaningful goals, evaluate their progress and explore career and educational opportunities. In addition to the joy of working directly with the young people, I am always moved and inspired by the Charting Careers staff who truly know, respect and value each and every one of the youth and their families. They are not just a name on a list or a number to account for. Every program the staff creates has clear meaningful goals in mind. Plus, they are constantly reflecting on their programs to maintain the integrity of their mission every step of the way.

REMEMBERING BUZZ STILLINGER,

ADVOCATE FOR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY

Arthur George Stillinger, known as "Buzz" to friends and family, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2023 at the age of 84. Buzz was an ardent supporter of the work that Charting Careers is doing and will be dearly missed. We are grateful to have known him and, with the help of donations in his memory, will be able to honor his legacy by supporting first generation college students. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and all who knew him.
