MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS:

SALUDA COMMUNITY LAND TRUST

By Jeanne Ferran

Sarah Jayne, the vice-president of the Saluda Community Land Trust, and her husband Bruce built a log cabin in Saluda in 1984 not long after they first discovered the town. As a Navy family they moved around but came to Saluda for vacations and holidays at every opportunity, and because of that Saluda has felt more like home than anywhere else for their three children. Sarah said, “Saluda has been the constant in their lives.”

Sarah’s favorite trail in Saluda is the Lazy Girl Loop, a one-mile amble at the Bradley Nature Preserve on Esseeola Street. There is a spring on the property that provided water for the houses above. The Lazy Girl (Lazy Gal) was a pulley system used to haul the water uphill and across the road. The Lazy Girl Trail encircles that spring.

Do you have a neighbor or friend who has done something wonderful for Saluda’s flora and fauna?

Do you have a question about Saluda’s natural community you would like answered?

If so, please email [email protected].

Working Large without Fear

Ransom Road Studio

519 Ransom Road

Saluda, NC

March 14-16, 2024

We will begin our journey with a “Get Acquainted” party at the home and studio on Wednesday, March 13th. Each day will start with a serving of conversation about technique over coffee, tea and pastries. We will break for lunch (“Dutch”) at one of Saluda’s delightful cafes and return to the studio for an afternoon of painting. You will

leave your “comfort zone” for three days and work larger than usual, identifying and conquering the compositional problems so often encountered when moving to a large format. Learn to be spontaneous in the beginning, creative in the middle and analytical in finishing your large works. By the end, you will understand how to solve problems specific to large scale paintings. We will have six hours of painting and demonstrations daily.

“Spring Greens”

Ransom Road Studios

519 Ransom Road

& Saluda Surrounding Area

Saluda, NC

May 16-18, 2024

In Spring, these mountains rival Ireland in the number and amount of “greens”. The different hues blanket the scene with fresh avocado, emerald, lime, and jade shades that are close to unbelievable!       The Spring foliage is a real awakening for the senses and the greens just beg to be captured on canvas. Daily, we will begin in the studio with demos and discussion, then continue the day painting “plein-air” at great sites where we will work to interpret these Spring colors in and around Saluda. We will be practicing “social distancing” which suits plein air painters perfectly!

On Wednesday, May 15th, we will have our “get acquainted (or reacquainted) get together” at our home and studio.

“Late Summer on the Blue Ridge”

Ann Lea Fine Art Gallery

976 Hwy 64 E

Cashiers, NC

have been invited to enjoy this workshop inside the amazing Ann Lea Fine Art Gallery. With lots of room to work in this artistic environment, we will work from photo refences as a point of departure for your compositions. We will determine what to leave out, what to leave in or change to make good paintings and make them your own.

Live Music & Events at Saluda Outfitters and

Green River Eddy’s Tap Room & Grill

Friday, Dec. 1, 7-10 p.m. | Arnold Hill Band is an alternative rock band based out of the Great Smoky Mountains of WNC. The band is identified by its lyrical storytelling, rich three-part harmonies and dynamic instrumentation. The group released “How to Run” in 2021. Band members include Mike Yow, guitar/lead vocals; Sam McCarson, bass/vocals; Adam Blythe, guitar/vocals; and Heath Brown, drums/vocals. Formed in 2011, the band is named for a road in Jackson County where the band members lived and practiced.

Saturday, Dec. 2, 7-10 p.m. | Kit Lindsey, a singer/songwriter hailing from Greenbrier, W. Va., is backed by bluegrass pickers to help her pair big sky honkytonk with messages that feel authentically Appalachian. Her robust voice is perfect for cowgirl blues. Growing up singing with her parents in church, she developed an early love of gospel, classic rock and folk music. Kit’s songwriting draws on the folk ballad and her live shows are reminiscent of the great outlaws of country music. Locals may remember her from her first band, West of Caroline.

Friday, Dec. 8, 7-10 p.m.| Take 3 Band of Greenville/Spartanburg area of South Carolina plays a variety of classic country to familiar rock songs. The band consists of Shaun Mitchell on guitar, vocals and harmonica; Ken Kallenbach on bass and vocals; and Rich Pocock on drums. Veteran musicians, the band members are native to the area and love sharing some “good old rock’n’roll.”

Saturday, Dec. 9, 7-10 p.m. | Seth & Sara from Asheville are a husband/wife duo that puts their special touch on Americana rock/pop/country music. Much of their show focuses on passionate and emotional originals of songwriter Seth Brand, who is winner of three Indi.com original songwriter awards. With Seth on guitar and Sara on percussion, the couple performs heartfelt and inspiring tunes.

Friday, Dec. 15, 7-10 p.m. | Melody Lane, a popular duo from South Carolina, consists of Peter “PJ” Teague and Jennifer Lewis. The talented duo’s music crosses various genres; including bringing back some of the oldies like “Be My Baby.” Established in 2021, the duo has been hitting the south east week after week bringing a cross genre sound and take on music from the 50s to modern day hits and everything in between. Between loop pedals, harmonicas, pianos, and accordions you’ll never know what’s next. Each show is a unique experience but one thing to expect is that you’ll be singing along and immersed in good vibes.

Saturday, Dec. 16, 7-10 p.m. | Izzy Hughes & Eric Congdon are local singer/songwriters who have joined musical forces to bring their individual artistic talents to the stage. A solo artist from Hendersonville, Izzy Hughes began making her way onto the music scene at a very young age when she started playing guitar and writing original songs. Eric Congdon’s finger-picking style radiates skill and charm, and his instrumental material incorporates everything from blues to bluegrass. Together, the ultra-talented duo plays originals and cover songs from all genres and decades.

Friday, Dec. 22, 7-10 p.m. | Charlie Alexander and Company is best characterized as a country music group; however, country doesn’t say it all. While the band plays a lot of originals, you can expect covers from the likes of Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson and Tom Petty to name a few. Growing up in the foothills of Appalachia, lead singer/songwriter Charlie Alexander Saunders soaked in all the music and culture of the area, slowly cultivating his original sound. The event promises a fun evening of live covers and originals.

Saturday, Dec. 23, 7-10 p.m. | Finkelstein Three is a trio headed by local talent Derek McCoy on guitar/vocals with Tommy Brooks on mandolin/vocals and Phil Simmons on upright bass. Finkelstein Three is a progressive bluegrass trio, playing everything from Bill Monroe to The Beatles. They are based in both Henderson and Cleveland counties in North Carolina.

Friday, Dec. 29, 7-10 p.m. | JackTown Ramblers is a Morganton-based bluegrass, swing and gypsy jazz band featuring Shannon Leasure (guitar/banjo), Gabriel Wiseman (lead vocals/mandolin), Brett Setzer (banjo/vocals) and Mike Ramsey (bass/vocals). The band formed in 2019 from a collection of “acoustic ramblers” who met through mutual friends and musical interests. Collectively, they just wanted to do something a little different with their music by melding together traditional bluegrass with sprinkles of swingy feeling tunes, band originals and some gypsy jazz type material just for fun. Hailed as one of the busiest working bands in the region, you don’t want to miss this group's unique style of fun and truly talented music.

Saturday, Dec. 30, 7-10 p.m. | Fancy & The Gentlemen Trio is based out of Asheville and brings an eclectic mix of honkytonk, blues, southern gothic, outlaw country and classical roots twist to Americana. The group’s sensitive and rich harmonies weave through the tapestry of original compositions and carefully curated covers that celebrate the roots of southern Americana music. The trio is anchored by talented guitarist and singer/songwriter Fancy Marie.

Sunday, Dec. 31, 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. | New Year’s Eve Party with Holden Pace and Borderline Therapy: Make your reservations now and ring in 2024 in style with party favors, live music by two great bands, food, drinks and tons of fun. Doors will close to the public at 5 p.m. and reopen to reservation holders at 6:30 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m. with Saluda native and Hendersonville resident Holden Pace’s opening act. The 5-member band will take over the stage at 9 p.m. and entertain until 12:30 a.m. Expect to hear an eclectic mix of rock and country from the 60s to the 2000s. We’ll celebrate at midnight with a free champagne toast. Tickets are $20 (with the option of ordering off Eddy’s menu) or $40 to include a New Year’s Eve appetizer trio of beef tenderloin sliders with peppercorn steak sauce, mushroom butter and buttermilk fried shallots; smoked crab cakes with Cajun remoulade; and crispy layered potatoes with crème fraiche, crumbled bacon and chives. Call (828) 848-4060 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily (except Tuesdays) to reserve your seats. For more information, email [email protected].

December 10th ~ Cowboy Judy Christmas Extravaganza (Sunday Concert)

A return performance quickly becoming a tradition at the Purple Onion, this energetic group of ladies is an event you don’t want to miss. Cowboy Judy always brings the show to, well, every show they perform. Couple their infectious stage presence, melodic songs, and penchant for grooving tunes you can’t sit still to? Exhilarating. Throw in some holiday cheer and festive motifs? Pure Magic.

Female fronted super group, Cowboy Judy (formally Sweet Claudette,) is the bringing together of worlds, in the best of ways. Singing an upbeat hybrid of country and motown, you would be hard pressed to find another group as gifted with their harmonies and charisma as you have here.

December 14th ~ Lonesome Road Band - $8

The Lonesome Road Band regularly travels as a three piece group, featuring banjo, guitar, and bass. In a nutshell, the band plays country and folk, but that wonderfully rustic country that walks you down a dirt road, with a pleasant breeze tickling your face, while the grasshoppers chirp. Founded back in 1995, the band has gone through a few changes in members, but has never lost its heart and soul – thanks in abundance to its founder Larry Keith. The charming yet stark fervency of The Lonesome Road Band’s music instantly takes audiences back to a time where songs told the world of man’s great love and great sorrows. Huddled around a vintage mic, the group would be right at home next to the Soggy Bottom Boys in “O Brother Where Art Thou.”

December 21st ~ West End String Band - $8

Dedicated to playing and performing traditional bluegrass music and old country songs with modern appeal, the West End String Band has been walking the perfect balance between nostalgia and a thumping good time. Don’t let the name fool you. The West End String Band is refreshing and invigorating, while holding true to the roots that formed this unique tradition of music. Formed back in 2008, the West End String Band blends the gritty and energetic vocals of lead Charlie McDaniel with harmonies from Kathy McDaniel and the driving banjo of Jim Rollins. Rounded out with the rich baritone and unique mandolin of Matt Purinton, this group is weaving together americana, bluegrass, and country in the best of ways.

December 28th ~ Tiny and Her Pony - $8

Indie, Appalachian-folk band, Tina & Her Pony, was formed in 2009 in Asheville, North Carolina by Tina Collins. Internationally known for their tight, sweet, smooth harmonies and simple, exposed, crafted instrumentation on cello, tenor ukulele & guitar, Tina and Her Pony has a fresh, palatable, sound that is bewitching. With warm smiles and honest simplicity, Tina & Her Pony bring a unique sound to the American folk tradition, featuring original songs that echo the sound of Appalachia, while creating new waves with radical, queer lyrics, uncommon instrumentation and vocals tighter than your mamas’ brazier.

The Flaming Hooker

By Cappy Hall Rearick

Newspaper ink was in my blood from the time I could hold pencil. Brenda Starr’s flaming red hair and thick eyelashes captured my heart. Mary Worth’s daily gift of mysteries became fodder for the day write my own whodunit. Brenda and Mary lived in the folds of my daily newspaper until the day I discovered Lois Lane looming larger than life on the silver screen. My comic strip idols became yesterday’s news.

The Atom Man vs. Superman movie introduced me to my new heroine. When Metropolis got in trouble, the editor of The Daily Planet assigned Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Clark Kent to cover the story. That first Superman film established the never-to-be-forgotten hero super icon.

Noel Neill went on to star in the Superman television series and recorded commentaries when DVD episodes were later released. The question she was most often asked was, “Why didn’t you know that Clark Kent was Superman wearing a pair of eyeglasses?” (I wondered the same thing.) She always replied, “Because I didn’t want to lose my job!”

By the time I met Noel, she had retired from filming her role as Lois Lane and was touring as a speaker and feature attraction at colleges and universities throughout the country. She often appeared at functions sponsored by the National Entertainment Conference (NEC), an association of colleges and universities, and the entertainment industry. In order to introduce certain artists to the students, NEC’s national and regional conferences showcased their performances. It was at one of the regional showcases that I was introduced to Superman’s main squeeze. Before writing this piece, I asked a NEC friend who had worked closely with her if he had any Noel stories to share.

“I thought, since she had ‘flown’ with Superman,” he said, “she would have no qualms about airline travel. I couldn’t have been more wrong. She refused to go near a plane, so I arranged train travel for her wherever she was scheduled to appear. She loved trains and I suspect it allowed her to be Lois Lane to a group of unsuspecting passengers. She signed a lot of autographs between stops.”

On the final night of a Southeastern Regional showcase, after the performers auditioned for future campus gigs, everyone was ready to party. It was on one such night that Noel and I were invited to join the elite “Flaming Hooker Society.”

I asked the obvious: The Flaming what?

A Flaming Hooker is a shooter made with peppermint schnapps and brandy. In order to become a member of the Society, Noel and I had to gulp one down while it was on fire.

Noel pasted on a movie star smile while the cameras went click, click, click, and then she downed her flaming drink as though a residual check depended on it. There was loud applause. I, on the other hand, stared at the little shot glass like it was cyanide while wishing I had a fireproof tongue. Noel Neill grinned at me and said, “Go for it, kiddo.”

Maybe it was that smile of hers that gave me the audacity I had known only as a child. I’m not sure, but in a nanosecond, I was back in the second grade watching Superman defy gravity while holding Lois Lane securely in his arms. At that moment, while I stared at a shot glass on fire, it was easy for me to see Noel as her alter ego, smiling like the star she would always be.

“Come on, Capster,” she urged. “Gulp the damn thing down.”

Fireproof tongue or not, I did what my heroine told me to do and for the rest of the night I managed to match Lois Lane drink for drink, the rest of which were not flaming. Somewhere packed among my bygone memories there is a faded certificate proclaiming me to be a full-fledged member in good standing of the Flaming Hooker Society. No doubt, Noel probably threw hers away.

Author’s Note:

Before retiring to Tucson, Noel Neill lived in Metropolis, Ohio where, in 2010 the city that calls itself the “official home of Superman” erected a statue of Lois Lane that looks a lot like my childhood idol. My heroine, the immortalized cub reporter Lois Lane holds a pad and pencil in her hands, writing her final scoop for the Daily Planet. She died in 2016.

Saluda Studios News

We have had our ribbon cutting and are ready to welcome everyone to Saluda’s home of Art & Fellowship.

Saluda Studios includes a warm indoor/outdoor event space, a fine art gallery for Preserving a Picturesque America (PAPA), and an art space for the creative community.

We will have gallery openings for various western North Carolina, art classes for the community, and fun outdoor movie nights this spring.

For those who don't know us, our organization is a nonprofit that raises money for the conservation and preservation of natural and historic landmarks all over the country. But we made our home in the wonderful town of Saluda. We raise money by selling artwork that depicts and celebrates the places we want to protect. The artists donate the gallery fee in order to protect the places that inspire them. We also work with other local nonprofits to help them reach their conservation goals.

During this holiday season, we are an ideal place for gift shopping. Find a gift for your loved one that also helps this beautiful land we love, as a portion of the sales proceeds support various protection efforts of environmental non-profits we partner with.

PAPA has become famous over the years for exceptional two-dimensional landscape artwork. But we have recently welcomed new artists with ceramics and jewelry-making skills. These artists also care greatly about the natural world and want to contribute. Another wonderful option for this gift-giving season at Saluda Studios.

During the colder season, when we don't get out as much as we might like to, it is a perfect time to learn or perfect art skills. So, we will have several classes this winter focusing on watercolors, printmaking, charcoal, and pastel artwork creation. The schedule will be posted soon on social media and on our website, which is https://saludastudios.com

Gift Certificates are available for winter art classes.

We are open every afternoon except for Monday and Tuesday.

So please come on by!

The Saluda Garden Club

December is a magical time of year and the lead up to Christmas is one of the most exciting times with the lights and all the festivities. It is a time where we gather with family and friends, exchange gifts, but also a time to “pay it forward” to those who aren’t as fortunate. For many, this holiday season will be stressful due to rising costs in everyday expenses such as food and gas. The Saluda Pop-Up Pantry has seen a significant rise in the number of shoppers who are directly impacted.  Garden Club members gathered in November to make holiday ornaments for shoppers at the Pop-Up Pantry.  Our hope is this small gesture of goodness and warmth of the holiday spirit goes a long way in brightening someone’s day.

We know the importance of connecting with friends and family, not just at Christmas, but throughout the year. Reaching out to others who we may not know, and passing on some kindness to them can mean so much. So during this holiday season let us reignite the true spirit of Christmas by sharing goodwill and kindness with family, friends, and others we may not know who need some good cheer.

Garden Club members will not be meeting in December, January or February.  Many fun meetings are being planned for 2024 that you will not want to miss. If you would like to join, please contact Garden Club President, Susan Cannon, at 828-749-3852 and she will provide you with more information. Dues are only $25 per year and meetings are held once a month except December, January and February.

On behalf of the Saluda Garden Club, we wish everyone a Christmas season

filled with joy, love, and peace. Have a safe and a Happy Holiday season!

Scott and “Sam" Varn, and Tim and Kim Werts officially opened “Saluda Studios” in May 2023 across from the Green River BBQ in Saluda, NC. The Studio is affiliated with Preserving a Picturesque America Gallery (PAPA).

PAPA, which is a not-for-profit organization, has a unique national mission with local roots. The organization's motto is “preservation through the power of the arts” and it lives up to its goal by retracing the footsteps and painting in the brushstrokes of the adventure artists from the 1800s who brought awareness to the need to protect and conserve. The gallery is full of amazing artwork from artists who have returned to those early locations and created modern versions. But the best part is that the proceeds from the art sales will go to protect these important historic and natural landmarks. Come in and you can hear the full story or read more from one of our latest books.

“Visitors should know that at the heart of Saluda Studios is our dedication to ‘building community through art and fellowship’,” says Scott Varn. We have several approaches to this mission including supporting local artists and natural beauty through Preserving a Picturesque America (PAPA) art studio and gallery. This not only fosters a sense of unity within the local artistic community but also champions the conservation of our stunning shared landscapes. We will be offering art classes and welcome others that want to do community-based programs.

The gallery space doubles as a unique event venue, ideal for family gatherings, group retreats, or business events, complete with the option to enjoy our garden space and apartment amenities. Finally, beyond these services, we are committed to strengthening Saluda's communal spirit by hosting and organizing local events—from music jams to open-air movie nights. We invite everyone to bring their enthusiasm and ideas to help us create memorable community experiences at Saluda Studios.

In addition to the art gallery and studio, we offer a cozy, two-to-four-person vacation rental, the "Garden Suite", perfect for those seeking to immerse themselves in Saluda's rich offerings of art, cuisine, entertainment and adventure.

An interesting personal tidbit about Saluda Studios is rooted in the bonds of friendship and tradition. The four owners are friends with over three decades of shared history when “Sam" and Kim met at a night class in Columbia, SC. But the delightful "fun fact" is that their love for Saluda was cemented by an extraordinary tradition known as "The Perry Como Extravaganza" that has occurred annually right here in Saluda. How the event was given such a name is another story! For over three decades, a group of close-knit friends have converged in Saluda every summer to revel in each other’s company, away from the hustle of daily life. It's more than just a reunion; it's a cherished ritual of camaraderie, laughter over drinks, melodies strummed on guitars, and the sharing of heartfelt life stories. These gatherings, symbolizing the journey from youth through all of life's twists and turns, have created a bond and a profound sense of fellowship that transcends all the current things that normally divide us. For this group of friends, Saluda represents a possibility for strengthening bonds and bridging gaps and standing as a testament to the joys of unity, marking Saluda not just as a town in the mountains, but as a place in our hearts.

“Like Saluda itself, Saluda Studios is more than just a destination. We want this to be an experience where art, nature, and human connections flourish together,” says Tim Werts.

“We invite you to join in, contribute your ideas, and help us continue to weave the social fabric that makes Saluda an unforgettable place to visit and engage with time and time again,” continues Tim.

Saluda Visitor’s Center

Did you know?

That the Saluda Hometown Christmas is on the evening of December 8th

All the businesses up and down Main Street in Saluda will be open and welcoming guests to come in and share Christmas treats.

Don’t forget to stop by the Visitor Center where you can have a warm cup of hot chocolate and a cookie.

Do your Christmas shopping in our local shops where you will find the perfect, unique gifts for those special people in your life. Wouldn’t you rather give a one-of-a-kind piece of pottery or handmade jewelry rather than that waffle maker you’ve been considering? Shop Saluda and give a special gift to those you love! And don’t forget Charlie’s homemade sausage for Christmas morning breakfast.

Merry Christmas! December has arrived and Saluda will be abuzz with visitors who will shop and enjoy the Christmas spirit in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Stop in the Visitor Center to find where those special holiday events are happening in our area. Those are posted in the Visitor Center. If you have events or activities that you would like to post in the Visitor Center, please send them or email them to Lynn Casey at [email protected]

The Visitor Center will be open 11:00 until 4:00 each day.

The Visitor Center, located at 20 W. Main Street, has a nice open room with information about Saluda and the surrounding area and two ADA-compliant restrooms. The Center features a slideshow created by the Saluda Historical Society that highlights Saluda’s history.

The center is run by an all-volunteer staff and all operating expenses are split equally between the Saluda Downtown Foundation, Saluda Business Association, and the Saluda Tourism Development Authority.

Additionally, we’d like to invite visitors and residents alike to visit the Center to learn about Saluda’s Historic walks or scenic drives, get hiking trail maps and area maps. We also have a “Things to do in Saluda” list, restaurant menus, lodging choices and a variety of business pamphlets. We continue to put out a call for more volunteers for short shifts to provide information and keep the facility in shape. The shifts are easy and fun, you meet nice people, and you will be properly trained before starting. Please consider volunteering or just drop by during hours to say hello!

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about the Visitor Center please contact Lynn Casey at [email protected].

Italian at Saluda Elementary

Last spring Mrs. Stephanie Fletcher, a first-grade teacher at Saluda Elementary School, was one of two teachers awarded a trip to Italy by the Saluda Sister City organization with the hopes of continuing to build relationships between Saluda Elementary and Carunchio Elementary Schools and among the elementary students at the two schools. After her return, Mrs. Fletcher applied for a grant through Rutherford EMC with the hopes of making a way for Saluda students to have the opportunity to learn the Italian language. Just last week the decision was made final and Saluda Elementary was awarded $1,000 to fund the program. Details are still being worked out as to when this program will begin, but Mrs. Fletcher said she is very grateful to Rutherford EMC for making this possible and is excited about how it will provide students with more opportunities to enhance their connections with their sister school in Carunchio, Italy. Sister City will be there to support this new curriculum effort because of the tremendous value to our children. To learn more about the impact on the brain of learning a foreign language, check out this website: https://www.pandatree.com/reason_foreign_language

Thanksgiving in Italy

Nada. They don’t do Thanksgiving, as it is an American custom, but Italians do have a commemoration called La Festa del Ringraziamento. It is literally, “The Feast of Thanks,” and is generally held to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. Since their harvest and our Thanksgiving coincide in the fall, folks are giving thanks on both sides of the pond! And we here in Saluda have SO MUCH to be thankful for!

Feast of the Seven Fishes

Read on and learn where you can take part in the feast! This feast is of Sicilian and Italian-American origin. It is a grand meal, typically held on Christmas Eve, but more recently, also on New Year’s Eve. Traditionally, the celebration commemorates the wait for the midnight birth of the baby, Jesus. The tradition of eating seafood on this occasion comes from the Catholic tradition of abstaining from eating meat on the eve of a feast day. So, fish and other seafood are the delicious substitute. The meal traditionally was seven different types of seafood and might include anchovies, whiting or other fish, lobster, shrimp, sardines, dried salt cod, squid, mussels and clams. If you want to have a traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes, check out Asheville’s Strada Italian restaurant. They will be serving on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve: https://eatingasheville.com/strada-italianos-feast-of-the-seven-fishes-set-for-this-holiday-season/The dinner at Wine Sage and Gourmet in Hendersonville is already sold out. BUT...you can still experience the meal by watching the 2018 comedy/drama, “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” a movie that takes place in the Olivero family kitchen. The movie has themes of family, finding romantic love and fear of being alone on Christmas.  It’s a fun way to spend an hour or two as your Christmas dinner settles. Find it free on Peacock and Roku. Amazon prime has it for $1.99.

Holidays are Happy at River Dog Run!

We can hear everyone now going “oh, no it is time to shop for Christmas!” But we put the fun back into the process…one of the great aspects of shopping local! With entertaining people and cool merchandise, we make spending time and money a pleasure again!

If you need a hostess gift for a party, we have Christmas specific items...tea towels that say “Bee Merry” in red and green and Morris the Horse is all decked out for Christmas on a tea towel and a pillow. We have gorgeous Christmas cards too! A set of four would make a wonderful gift! We have “Grinch” soaps that are also excellent stocking stuffers for children or those acting like children.

For Christmas gifts, we have regular tea towels that make everyone smile and remind them of friends and family. “Girls Weekend: Because life is too short to remain dignified” is a new popular one as “In dog beers, I’ve only had one.” Come in and see what reminds you of whom!

We have a wonderful selection of apron/rompers that are happy in the kitchen and out of it! These exquisitely made pieces go with sugar and flour or a turtleneck and leggings. Actually, they can do double duty as both!

Useful pottery is always a welcome gift, and we have small to large pieces from our local potter at Muddy Lama. A garlic grater can be a stocking stuffer and the Brie Baker can attend a lot of parties. With recipes included these are mouthwatering gifts!

Our pillows work indoors or out! One is “Mountains are the cathedral where I practice my religion” and of course there is the most popular one that declares “ I love you more today that yesterday. Yesterday, you really got on my nerves.” You will find a sentiment that fits friends and family.

These are just a few of the items in River Dog Run. We have chairs, lamps, silver pieces, chests, and rugs. There are hand painted pillows that just cry out for a permanent place on a sofa or chair. We have a new vendor for candles with the same delicious flavors and new names and packaging.

So come in and make shopping fun again as well as easy. We offer unique gifts without any holiday hassle!

River Dog Run is located at 46 E Main Street in Saluda and we are open

Mon-Sat 11AM to 5PM.

The Orchard Inn & Newman's Restaurant & Spa

As Fall begins to wane, the days get shorter, but the weather couldn't be nicer here in beautiful Saluda. Mild sunny days and cool crisp evenings with zero humidity. My invigorating morning walks with our Boxer girl are gorgeous with sunrises that fill the tree lined horizon with blazing color are simply wonderful. And the muted Fall colors continue to amaze. The holidays are right around the corner and there's no nicer place to get into the spirit of the season than at our 97-year-old warm and cozy Inn with its signature fireplace and eclectic furnishings.  Not only are the colors of the changing leaves fabulous but it's also the crisp clean quality of the fresh air that's equally as fantastic. As you ascend the winding driveway to our 12-acre elegant mountain oasis, restaurant and spa, framed with beautiful winter plants, the stress of normal day-to-day life immediately starts to drift away. The official welcome committee (our Boxer - Roxy) will be standing by to challenge you with a stick and walk you up the steps to our antebellum front porch where she will attempt to lure you into a game of tug of war. Don't be tempted - you're sure to lose. Welcome to the Orchard Inn & Spa and Newman's Restaurant where the temperature is cool, the atmosphere is serene and the hospitality warm. Come help us celebrate 97 years of gracious southern living.

Our fine dining restaurant, Newman's, continues to receive high accolades from food critics far and wide and sells out most every meal. Voted by Our State Magazine as one of the top 14 "must experience restaurants" in North Carolina. We have created a lovely all weather outside dining area on our back terrace with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains. We serve dinner every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights starting at 5:30 pm, and an incredible Brunch every Sunday beginning at 11:30 am. At Newman's Restaurant we strive to bring diners a true "farm to table" gastronomic experience. Treat yourself to a most creatively prepared and delicious fine dining culinary adventure! You don't have to be a guest of the Inn to enjoy a meal at Newman's. Our amazing 3-course brunch is only $45 and goes from 11:30-1:30 every Sunday. Our 4-course dinners are a great value at $89. Every seat in the elegant dining room has an awesome view of the Saluda mountains, and the fire table on our lower gazebo terrace is a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail, glass of wine or local beer prior to dinner. It's hard to find a better meal in the great culinary towns of Asheville, Greenville or Charleston. We are literally a diamond in the woods. Call 828-749-5471 now to book a table this weekend before it's too late. Now serving awesome cocktails and mixed beverages for your enjoyment!

There are still a few spots available for our Holiday Festivities - our Dickens' Dinners, Christmas & New Year's Eve Dinners have limited seating opportunities. Call to reserve.

Our Spa is open and all are welcome. We've created a very zen-like environment where you can de-stress, unwind, relax and be pampered with an array of therapeutic massages or restorative facials by highly skilled therapists. It's a perfect place to have a girl's afternoon off and sit by the waterfall while sipping a glass of wine after a heavenly treatment. The Koi fish are waiting to greet you so come check us out. We are now offering all organic healing products from Appalachian Growers.

Originally built in 1926 and called the Mountain Home of Southern Railway Clerks the Inn sits on 12 acres, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a member of the distinguished Select Registry and Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. There are 8 rooms upstairs in the Inn, all with private baths and lovely mountain views, a suite downstairs, 5 private cottages with decks or screened in porches, deluxe soaking tubs for two, and gas fireplaces, plus 2 new mountain view luxury suites. All rooms are tastefully decorated with antiques and period pieces, and our linens are ultra luxurious. The gracious hosts, Marc & Marianne look forward to welcoming you to their little slice of heaven. We're proud to announce being awarded by Trip Advisor - 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Certificate of Excellence, and by Open Table - No. 1 Restaurant in Western N.C.

We look forward to greeting you soon!

Crisp winds flow through trees, loosening the last leaves from their homes. Birds snuggle on their perches, singing songs which travel in the now clean mountainous terrain. Winter approaches in its quiet way, as nights lengthen and the air frosts. A balance to the vivid excitement of summer and bustle of fall. A calm space inviting us to linger, allowing us time to recenter. As the year draws to an end and the Holidays are in full swing, we invite you to take a moment to breathe, to meander, to still in moments of serenity. We welcome you to our hearth and hope to offer you the warmth of shared community, love of excellent company, and the comfort of the season’s flavors. Happy Holidays from our Family to yours.

My Wonderful Dogs!

My companions on this glorious journey.

Kaya (on the right) was adopted from Foothills in August 2019, she just turned six years old. My heart.

Please consider rescuing or adopting, if you decide to bring an animal into your family.

LO (on the left) was dumped here in Saluda in 2020 and found her way to us. She is our unstoppable tank, running full speed into every blessed day. She turned 4 years old on November 1st!

There is a great group of dogs and companions who meet on Sunday mornings at 10:00am, at the Saluda Dog Park. Come join the pups and some people too.
