Meet Your Neighbors:

The Holly and the Dogwood,

nominated by Martin Anderson and Hannah Seng

“Three hundred years to grow/ Three hundred more to thrive /Three hundred years to die/ Nine hundred years alive” -adapted from Robert MacFarlane, “Spell Songs”

I am sitting in the lower lower limbs of my hemlock. So far, a flycatcher has stopped in to have a look, and two cats have climbed- and fallen from- her branches. Both of my dogs have scratched back the soft needles and lay on cool, damp earth. My sons climb her crown to watch the deer, then hide in her skirt. These limbs radiate over 30 feet in length, then rise up another fifteen feet to catch the light that filters through the south slope, forming a perfect wall of green. As a mother I am grateful that I have been able to step back and let this tree do a little bit of my kids’ raising.

I asked some friends about their favorite trees, and most chose one like mine: a tree from their yards. Describing her ancient oaks, Charley Thompson said, “the trees become part of the family.” Some mentioned trees that have recently come down- the community garden hemlocks on Henderson Street, the giant crepe myrtle on Eseeola, the cherry trees at McCreery park, and the rope swing tree on the Green River. Our trees have personality and purpose, and like any family members, we mourn them when they are gone.

Martin Anderson said his favorite local tree is the holly in the Saluda cemetery. “It may be the largest holly tree I have ever seen, and it stands out so stately amongst the flat solemn landscape of the cemetery. I guess it just reminds me a bit of the Hadrian’s wall sycamore in England,” he says. His wife Hannah Seng says her favorite is the dogwood on the top of Judd’s Peak. “I love the shape of the dogwood. It has a presence like a personality, standing mostly alone on the hilltop, looking over the mountains. It looks old, but it is still vibrant and lush each year.”

Martin started to develop a land ethic as an exchange student in Oregon, where he got involved in efforts to protect the Northern Spotted Owl and became aware of concepts such as bioregionalism and biodiversity. After a decade in the Pacific Northwest, Martin was hired by WNCW, and he chose Saluda for its location in between Asheville and Spindale. It is easy to see why Saluda reminds him of the Oregon woods: their yard is shaded with Norway Spruce, ferns line the banks, and soft green mosses blanket the ground.

Hannah Seng, his wife, an artist and musician and native of Banner Elk and Asheville, was initially introduced to Saluda through family friend Carolyn Ashburn. Hannah’s first fiddle came from Top of the Morning. Hannah’s family instilled in her the ethic that nature itself was sacred. Creating art in Saluda reflects these values. Hannah says, “I paint a world of trees and branches, and the birds are the characters. I love that the story is in the trees and the birds are persevering in what can be a harsh world.”

When the empty half acre lot next to their house went up for sale, Martin, Hannah, and their neighbors bought it together. “We wanted to keep it green. It is like a wildlife highway. We have seen deer, fox, bear, and a ton of birds,” Martin said. He points to a dead locust snag. “That tree houses woodpeckers. I’ve seen racoons climbing it.” This year, elderberry, ash, and oak saplings have sprung up. Martin and Hannah also fenced in a part of this corridor and planted a vegetable and herb garden.

You can find Martin and Hannah working in their yard, walking Judd’s Peak or Lazy Girl Loop, catching a show at Purple Onion, or visiting one of our coffee shops.

“Every oak tree started off as a couple of nuts who stood their ground.” -Henry David Thoreau

or environmental issues of the Saluda community?

Headed by Jim Tatum, lead/rhythm/slide guitar/vocals; Ed Esposito, lead/rhythm guitar/vocals; Mike Montgomery, bass; Jeff Mooneyan, keys/vocals; David Franklin, drums. The group plays deep cut B side classic rock and blues with lots of great harmonies.

Saturday, Nov. 4, 7-10 p.m. | The Basement Bunch originated as a group of fellow musicians more than a dozen years ago who just wanted to get together and jam in Jim Peterman’s basement in Tryon, hence their name. The band regularly performs in the area with Jim Peterman, keyboard and vocals, John Holvelsrud, guitar, Mike Carruth, drums/vocals, Vinny Corda, flute/sax/guitar/vocals and Elaina Prevett, bass/mandolin.

Friday, Nov. 10, 7-10 p.m.| The Right Hooks is a Hendersonville-based, five-member band. They describe their music as a “gumbo” of rock, blues and soul with favorite covers and originals. Making it a family affair, the band includes Audrey Lawrence on lead vocals and keys, Kevin Lawrence on vocals and lead guitar, and Kevin Lawrence, Jr. on drums, along with Chad Hensley on lead guitar and vocals and Dan Taylor on bass.

Saturday, Nov. 11, 7-10 p.m. | Celebrate Veteran’s Day with The Reedy River String Band. This band plays foot-stompin' music in three-part harmony. Band members include Mark Dye, upright bass/vocals; Sterling Waite, fiddle/mandolin/harmonica/vocals; and Rush Morgan, guitar/vocals. The band engages a mix of originals and familiar covers.

While the band plays a lot of originals, you can expect covers from the likes of Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson and Tom Petty to name a few. Growing up in the foothills of Appalachia, lead singer/songwriter Charlie Alexander soaked in all the music and culture of the area, slowly cultivating his original sound. The event promises a fun evening of live covers and originals.

Saturday, Nov. 25, 7-10 p.m. | The Pace Brothers, Holden and Jadon ‘Big Jay’ Pace are Saluda natives and singer/songwriters who will bring their form of original music to the Sound Garden Stage for the first time together. The brothers perform as soloists as well as each has a band. Big Jay plays guitar and also serves as drummer/vocals for the popular Dirty South Band, while Holden fronts the Holden Pace Band. November 2nd ~ Fwuit! - $8

Fwuit is an Asheville-based retro soul band consisting of members of the bands MOVES and Holy Ghost Tent Rivival. Dulci, Kevin, and Ross play a mix of original music and carefully chosen covers. Highlighting a beautiful two-part harmony atop the deepest pockets of groove, Fwuit is sophisticated soul pop. The band is the concentrated – one might say “juiced” – form of MOVES, taking the powerhouse vocals of Dulci along with weaving harmonies and grooving instrumentals provided by Kevin and Ross and directing them in a fresh direction. Fwuit provides thoughtful lyrics reflecting the world around them with a wondrous balance of heart and fun.

November 9th ~ The Moon and You - $8

At its core, The Moon and You is a charismatic husband-and-wife team. Melissa Hyman plays cello, Ryan Furstenberg plays guitar and banjo, and both sing in “voices that sound like they were made for one another” (Bill DeYoung, Connect Savannah). But whatever you might assume based on their gorgeous vocal blend and heartfelt lyrics, this ain’t your basic folk duo. With a rotating cast of talented friends to add unexpected instrumentation to their lineup, The Moon and You never plays the same show twice. This ever-evolving, expandable and collapsible model leaves the band constantly reinventing itself in ways both surprising and satisfying.

November 16th ~ Rupert Wates - $8

His music is an eclectic mix of acoustic, melodic art/folk, with flavors of jazz, vaudeville and cabaret. Rupert Wates averages 120 live shows every year, in front of audiences totaling more than 3,500, in acoustic venues in every state in America, in Canada, and in Europe. He prefers smaller listening rooms where the audience is up close and the emphasis is on the music. A seemingly small detail, but one that has helped maintain Wates’ authenticity throughout the years and only reaffirmed as audiences everywhere respond to his unique brand of melodic art/folk music — haunting songs that ring true.

El Poeta Perfecto

By Cappy Hall Rearck

“If you never want to see a man again, say:

‘I love you, I want to marry you, I want to have your

children’. They leave skid marks.” — Rita Rudner

Luanne, in search of the perfect man, made a list of the essentials she hopes to find:

Loves to cook. Prepares impromptu gormet meals. Cleans up her kitchen. No dried food on her grandmother’s Havilland China.

Her man must love poetry and read it to her while sipping expensive, French bubbly.

“Poetry,” she says, “is a requirement. Also, knowledge of current trends. All the ‘A’ list restaurants, diamonds, classical music and Wall Street.

“A high I.Q.,” she says, “is vital; a sense of humor marginal.”

Go figure.

I scan a copy of the list she plans to post in every bar in a forty-mile radius.

“Whoopsy” I hold up my hand. “You forgot something, Luanne. You want him to be gorgeous with hair, right? What if he’s a Lyle Lovett lookalike?”

She gives me a look. “You’re so superficial.”

“Shouldn’t he be taller than you? You’re five three? What if Mr. Bodacious sallies forth with all the essentials, but he’s uh … height challenged? A Danny DeVito?”

She glares. “Why are you trying to confuse me?”

I shrug. “I’m not! I’m suggesting a few things. My single friends all look for a tall man with hair, although at our age maybe hair isn’t a priority. You’re likely to find a man over fifty with a good crop up top than one who reads Sylvia Plath to you.”

She tosses her head and sniffs. “I prefer the Browning’s. Robert and Elizabeth B.”

“Listen, Toots, men today don’t do poetry. They crawl under the covers, watch ESPN, fall asleep and snore. Poetry readings in bed went out with negligees.”

She wrinkles her nose. “I have a lot of negligees,” she says.

My mouth is a virtual flytrap. “You’ve got negligees? Seriously?”

Her head dips to the left, her brows lift slightly as she affects a wide-eyed ingénue expression. “Real women own negligees.”

I stare at the woman I thought I knew. If there a Chronic Retro-Fifties Syndrome, this woman with flimsy nightgowns has a full-blown case.

Luanne is beyond middle-aged, but she’s attractive. She works out, drives around in the obligatory pink Caddy presented by, who else but Mary Kaye. She dresses well and takes adult education classes at the community college. She rarely cooks, so some may consider that a negative. After tasting her culinary attempts, however, that would not be the case.

What’s wrong with this picture? Either she lives in a diaphanous 1950’s world, or she’s a hooker with a client list of men over seventy who’re searching for a Loretta Young clone.

The last time Luanne had a date, her brother fixed her up with his college roommate who claimed to be a poet. Big bro slipped him fifty bucks and said, “Show my Sis a good time, and read her a poem.”

The roommate, Hector, took her to dinner at El Porto, bought her one Margarita and said, “Eat your heart out, darlin’. It’s included in the price.”

He recited a Mexican nursery rhyme, pocketed the rest of big bro’s pesos, then walked her out to her pink Caddy. “I drive,” he stated in a voice not to be argued with, then she watched him back into the only other car in the parking lot.

Hector had downed three Tequila shots while Luanne sipped her one Margarita and couldn’t afford another DUI. Self-preservation kicked in and he sprang out of the car like a Mexican jumping bean. He shoved Luanne over and sat down in the passenger seat.

Having not downed three Tequila shots, the owner of the black Mercedes Hector banged into, was far from a happy caballero. The front of his two-week-old luxury car looked like it had just been driven up from Mexico.

Luanne no longer speaks to her brother.

I look at her essential list again, and suddenly I get why the list is so important. Finding the perfect man is not really what she’s after. No! What she wants is a man capable of wiping out her memory of Hector, the date from Hell.

“Luanne? You misspelled gourmet in the first sentence,” I say. “Correct that, then make another two hundred and fifty copies, and I’ll help you post them. Between us, we’ll cover eighty-miles without breaking a sweat.”

The Mousetrap

“The Mousetrap” opened in London’s West End in 1952, closed temporarily in March 2020 (due to Covid), then reopened in May of that year, and is still running! By November, 2022, the show had its 28,195th performance, and had been seen by over 10 million people in London alone. And now it’s coming to TLT.

The show is directed by Jim Powell who you may have seen in some recent TLT productions, but he has acted —and directed — in many shows over the years in Chicago, San Diego and Michigan. He has over 100 performances under his belt, including playing the title role in “Macbeth”. “The Mousetrap” is his directorial debut at TLT.

Cast members are all seasoned actors, and thrilled to be part of the production: Lou Buttino, Darlene Cah, Carol Cox, Susan Ferguson, Luke Laughter, Preston Pyatt, Alex Tapp, and Allanah Updegraff play an eclectic mix of characters sure to enthrall and confuse you. A whodunit, the play has a twist ending —which the audience are traditionally asked not to reveal after leaving the theatre.

Exploring Reiki with Leslie Carey:

Reiki was developed in Japan, in 1922 by a Buddhist monk during his meditation, though some believe it has been around for much longer. Reiki is a metaphysical modality which promotes balance and harmony. Reiki is not a religion or a contradiction of other spiritual foundations.

I have been a Reiki practitioner since 2007 and have been working with a wide range of clients from those struggling to overcome addiction, become pregnant, decrease anxiety, relieve Multiple Sclerosis pains, those in hospice, PTSD, eating disorders, depression or going through cancer treatments to others who feel ‘stuck’ or conflicted, or just want to have general increase of well-being. Even dogs enjoy receiving Reiki.

I consider myself a conduit for healing. I do tune-in with people and their body/emotions, from there, darkness or negativity can surface, be healed and therefore, people feel better.

Reiki has helped me by healing my emotional wounds in such a way that incidents of my past don’t cause me current struggle. Living a Reiki life allows me to live a much more joyful, peaceful and meaningful existence. I encourage all types of people to give Reiki a chance because it’s a refreshing style of bodywork. Not only do our muscles need attention, but so do our energetic fields.

The popular White Squirrel Hiking Challenge is back! Participants are invited to take on eight hikes, all on lands that Conserving Carolina has helped protect, enhance, or open to the public. White Squirrel Hiking Challenge 7 includes a stunning new trail in the Hickory Nut Gorge, a waterfall in North Carolina’s newest state forest, the breathtaking World’s Edge cliffs in Chimney Rock State Park, and more.

Hikers who take the challenge will get to experience eight special places, including some that only opened to the public in the last few years. They will discover hidden gems away from the crowds, experience lovely waterfalls and mountain views, and connect on a deeper level with our natural world. They can also earn their White Squirrel Hiking Challenge 7 patch as a badge of honor and perks from Mast General Store.

The eight hikes are:

·        Bearwallow Mountain Trail

·        Strawberry Gap Trail

·        DuPont Loop: Quarry and Rocky Bald

·        World’s Edge in Chimney Rock State Park

·        Green River Game Lands Loop to Stairstep Falls

·        Gravely Falls in Headwaters State Forest

·        Foothills Equestrian Nature Center Trails

·        Alexander’s Ford in Bradley Nature Preserve

Each of these hikes is a testament to how land conservation can enrich all of our lives. For example, when Headwaters State Forest opened to the public in 2018, it created a new 6,730-acre wonderland to explore. Bearwallow Mountain and Strawberry Gap are both part of the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail that Conserving Carolina is spearheading—a growing network of trails that will ultimately span over 100 miles. Other hikes are on public lands that Conserving Carolina has expanded with recent projects.

White Squirrel Hiking Challenge 7 is sponsored by the conservation-focused real estate firm Witherspoon Platt + Associates (WPA). John Witherspoon, broker-in-charge, says, “At WPA, we are avid supporters of Conserving Carolina and their mission to protect our environment and facilitate experiences with the natural world. We are excited to be an active part of this year’s Hiking Challenge because it will provide people with an incredible opportunity to be outside and to enjoy the beautiful place we are lucky enough to call home.”

This challenge is free and open to all. However, to earn your White Squirrel patch and perks from Mast General Store, you must also be a Conserving Carolina member. Individuals who donate $35 or more, or households that donate $60 or more, annually are Conserving Carolina members. Conserving Carolina members can take pride as they hike, knowing that they are helping to protect amazing places like these for everyone to enjoy, forever

In addition to the White Squirrel Hiking Challenge, Conserving Carolina also offers the Flying Squirrel Outdoor Challenge. The Flying Squirrel Outdoor Challenge offers a wider variety of outdoor activities and can be tailored to any ability level. In this challenge, people choose 8 out of 13 outdoor activities. The options include moderate hikes, bike paths, greenways, waterfalls, scenic overlooks, forest bathing, and volunteer workdays.

Conserving Carolina is a local land trust that has helped protect over 48,000 acres, including more than 30 places where people can get outside—from vast wilderness areas to local greenways. The mission of Conserving Carolina is to protect, restore, and inspire appreciation of the natural world. Learn more and become a member at conservingcarolina.org.

WALKS IN THE WOODS

November 5 - Cabins in the Cove Tour a 1920’s restored log cabin, surrounding grounds and trails of nearly 1-mile on adjoining property that feature an early 1900s barn, and small waterfall. See the natural regeneration from the damage of 2018 tropical storm Zeta.

Walkers meet at the parking lot of the Saluda Library at 2 pm. A SCLT member will keep you aware of the terrain of the trail and share their insights about the history, flora, and fauna of the area.

Prepare for each walk with comfortable shoes, a walking stick, water, and a snack. Feel free to bring your field guides and a camera. Please provide any pertinent medical history to your guide. Many of these hikes will access private property. SCLT has obtained the owners' permission to allow you to access these areas that are normally not available to the public.

All the makings for a wreath of your own design will be provided at this merry activity for children and adults. Bring clippers if you have them as well as ribbon or ornaments. Dress warmly and bring chairs or blankets if you like.

Chocolate Drop

Many of you have some knowledge as to the recent

history of Chocolate Drop Mountain. If not, here is a very brief

synopsis of its history from 2007 until the present.

A developer from Texas bought the mountain in 2006 and

quickly started building subdivision roads to the top of the

mountain, following the county rules which requires a 60 foot

right of way for a major subdivision (up to 44 lots).

Unfortunately, the mountain slopes were too steep, so the side of the mountain simply slid downhill, filling the adjoining

landowners’ small lake with sediment. What followed was

years of lawsuits and foreclosures; it was not a pretty picture,

to say the least.

In 2013 Save Our Slopes contacted SCLT to ask for help.

Many of the Chocolate Drop lots were going up for foreclosure,

and there were no buyers. SCLT asked the Polk County Community

Foundation (PCCF) for help, and thankfully PCCF gave that

support. Over the next 8 years PCCF and SCLT worked together

buying the lots that were being foreclosed along with the (15)

lot owners who chose to ‘hang in there’ for the long haul, with

no clear vision of how it would all work out.

It was worth it, and it did work out! In 2021, the Town of

Columbus bought the 46 acres ‘top of the mountain’ from SCLT

to create “Chocolate Drop Park” that will be used for

pedestrian trails. SCLT repaid the money that PCCF had loaned to SCLT,

who now holds the conservation easement on

these 46 acres which will leave it forever undeveloped. With

PCCF support, SCLT also purchased a narrow strip of land

connecting the high school to the future park. There is still lots

of work to do, building trails and such; but the result will be far

greater than any of us could imagine when this all began way

back in 2007.

Newsletter Team

Excuse the SCLT newsletter team while they take a break from

The Saluda Garden Club members always gather for our last meeting of the year for one of our community projects. This year our Club President, Susan Cannon, has offered her time and studio for members to make small glass tree ornaments. We plan to make these ornaments for the shoppers at the Pop-Up Pantry who need something to brighten their day, especially during the holiday season.  The holidays can be a difficult time of year for many and this is our way of bringing a little joy into their life.

The Saluda Garden Club will meet at the Saluda Moon Glass Studio & Gallery on Monday, November 20, 2023 at 10:00am.  This meeting is for members only. We will have a taco bar luncheon provided in appreciation of our club members. Chris Williams, new to Saluda and a trained chef, will cater our luncheon.

Many challenges are facing our country and beyond right now but we are blessed in countless ways and have much to be thankful for. On behalf of the Saluda Garden Club, we wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Our members are a diverse group of women with varied interests who help plan many different activities throughout the year. If you would like to join, please contact Garden Club President, Susan Cannon, at 828-749-3852 and she will provide you with more information. Dues are only $25 per year. Meetings are held on the third Monday each month with the exception of January and December.

DO NOT CALL PEST CONTROL!

Most pest control companies will exterminate baby animals. Call me and I will capture and deliver any baby animals to a wildlife rehabilitation center that I am in contact with.

These animals are crucial to our environment. Skunks and opossums are beneficial to farmers, gardeners, and landowners because they feed on large numbers of insects and rodents. Opossums eat ticks, reducing the Lyme disease carrying tick population, eating nearly 95% that cross their path. They are resistant to snake venom, and eat venomous species. Squirrels are natures gardeners. Raccoons feed on carrion, which assists in eliminating decomposing animal matter. Foxes control rodent populations. All of these critters are crucial to maintaining a happy ecosystem.

Please call or text me day or night, and I will assist you by catching and bringing these critters to the appropriate people for rehabilitation and then release to large forested areas away from our neighborhoods.

Heartwood Gallery is excited to announce its Annual Holiday Fundraiser Ornament for 2023! All proceeds from ornament sales go directly to Outreach, a nonprofit that has provided financial and food assistance to thousands of Polk County residents in need since 1991. Scott Kinard took his last breath on Monday, Oct. 23th. His loving Saluda community sang and prayed him on his way to the next adventure, one he was receptive to.

Born Fred Scott McFarling on January 7, 1956 in Texas, Scott took his stepfather’s last name when his mother, Elsie, married Johnny Kinard.

Scott didn’t drink, curse or smoke. He had a Bachelor degree in business from UT Austin. Hard working and quick to find humor, he creatively made his way in the world. Scott found a great fit working with Poetry Alive, presenting poetry in schools. For years, he involved students, teachers and as many principals as were willing to join him on stage.

His love of music, theatre, comics, community and play fueled his joy. He memorized thousands of poems and could sing in several languages, having been thoroughly engaged with the Wild Asheville Community Chorus. He was philosophical in nature and wrote The Super Bible, his serious but light hearted view of our inherent ONEness.

Those who knew Scott knew him to be a creative force of nature. Scott had no pretense, no airs, and many people who loved him. His girlfriend of 13 years, Jeannie Croxton, and those who rallied with him as his health declined, invite you to a Celebration of Scott’s life at the Saluda Senior Center on Sunday, November 12 at 6pm.

Come and share your stories of Scott. Light refreshments will be served.

In lieu of flowers or donations, Scott would rather that you stay close to your loved ones, play well with others and express yourself.

Saluda Visitor’s Center

Did You Know?

There is an annual Saluda event that often goes unnoticed by many visitors and residents. On the first Saturday in November, the best kayakers in the world descend on the Green River to participate in the Green Race. This year, the 28th Annual Green Race will occur on Saturday, November 4.

“So what’s the attraction?”, you ask. The Green River section called the “Narrows” drops 342 feet in a half mile and contains 11 class IV and V rapids. Water funnels through narrow 4-foot-wide sections making it one of the most extreme kayaking runs in the Eastern US. Saluda will welcome 170+ kayakers and 2000+ observers to watch what is considered by many as the most competitive and most coveted whitewater race in the world.

Learn more about the Green Race at the Saluda Visitor Center.

Wow! November has arrived and Saluda will be abuzz with visitors to view the beautiful leaves of Fall and enjoy Thanksgiving in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Some of our restaurants offer a Thanksgiving meal. Stop in the Visitor Center to find Thanksgiving menus offered in our area. There are also many activities in our area and those are posted in the Visitor Center. If you have events or activities that you would like to post in the Visitor Center, please send them or email them to Lynn Casey at [email protected]

The Visitor Center will be open 11:00 until 4:00 each day.

The Visitor Center, located at 20 W. Main Street, has a nice open room with information about Saluda and the surrounding area and two ADA-compliant restrooms. The Center features a slideshow created by the Saluda Historical Society that highlights Saluda’s history.

The center is run by an all-volunteer staff and all operating expenses are split equally between the Saluda Downtown Foundation, Saluda Business Association, and the Saluda Tourism Development Authority.

Additionally, we’d like to invite visitors and residents alike to visit the Center to learn about Saluda’s Historic walks or scenic drives, get hiking trail maps and area maps. We also have a “Things to do in Saluda” list, restaurant menus, lodging choices and a variety of business pamphlets. We continue to put out a call for more volunteers for short shifts to provide information and keep the facility in shape. The shifts are easy and fun, you meet nice people, and you will be properly trained before starting. Please consider volunteering or just drop by during hours to say hello!

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about the Visitor Center please contact Lynn Casey at [email protected].

RiverStreet Networks partners with CoBank

to award the Saluda Pop-Up Pantry $5,000

RIVERSTREET NETWORKS awarded the Saluda Pop-Up Pantry a $5,000 grant on September 14, 2023. This was a grant matched with funds provided by CoBank out of Greenwood Village, Colorado.  “Sharing Success” is a matching grant program created by CoBank in 2012. The cooperative bank partners with its customers, like RiverStreet Networks, to support the causes and organizations they both care about. RiverStreet Networks awarded $2,500 to the Saluda Pop-Up Pantry, and CoBank matched the funds resulting in a $5,000 unrestricted grant award. Several RiverStreet representatives attended the ceremony along with our business leaders, Steve Orr and Tangie Morgan.

These funds will go a long way in helping our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. With the reduction in SNAP benefits and the rising food costs, the Pantry has seen a significant rise in the number of families shopping at the Pantry this year. A big “thank you” to RiverStreet Networks who supports the Pantry’s motto “friends sharing with friends.”

We are thankful for our many blessings and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

More information about the Pantry can be found at our website [email protected]. Donations are most appreciated and can be mailed to Pop-Up Pantry, P. O. Box 428, Saluda, NC 28773 or you can donate using the “Donate” link found at our website.

What Happened in Carunchio??

And How Did It Affect Claire?

Recall that Saluda Sister City sent rising high school senior and Saluda resident, Claire Thompson, to Carunchio for four weeks in July. A week of cooking lessons and touring with Massimo and the crew at the Palazzo, 4 days each with the Mayor of Carunchio’s family and the local truffle-hunter’s family and then off to Vasto to visit and travel with Benedetto, the young woman who was our first summer exchange from Abruzzo.  What did Claire learn about Italians and Italy? Was it frightening to travel alone? How did her parents feel about letting her make the journey alone? What difficulties did she encounter? What impact has it had on her and her family? What did she learn about herself? How do truffle hunters train their dogs to sniff out truffles? What does a truffle taste like?

All these and more (and any questions you can think of) will be answered by Claire and her parents at a talk on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at the Saluda Center. There is no charge and Saluda Sister City will serve homemade cookies and lemonade after the program. Please come and join us. It will be a great experience for Claire to speak to a crowd and respond to questions, and it will give you an understanding of how such a trip can make a significant difference in a young person’s life.

We have two rising seniors coming this year from Carunchio and we will be looking for our next Saluda student to go in the summer of 2025. If you know a parent of a young person, encourage them to come and learn about the trips. Saluda Sister City pays the transportation and Carunchio provides the experiences so there is virtually no cost to the student or the family. Hope to see you there at 6 p.m., November 21.

November 10th Train Tales at Saluda Historic Depot Features Bo Brown

On Friday, November 10th, rail enthusiast Bo Brown will be the guest speaker for the Saluda Historic Depot’s monthly Train Tales. Bo, who is the current National Vice President of the Railroading Collectors Association Inc., will be speaking on “Remembering the Railroad Porters and Their Vital Role”.

An avid railroad memorabilia collector, Bo started collecting his railroad antiques when he was 12 years old. His grandfather who worked for Southern Railway for 40+ years, gave him a Southern “shorty” lantern, a long neck oiler and a silver Southern thermos. That began a lifetime pursuit of collecting Southern Railway.

When not on the trail of another relic, he spends a great deal of time helping families in his community as the owner of The Howze Mortuary in Travelers Rest, SC. Bo is on the advisory board of the Bank of Travelers Rest, is the current Vice-President of the Carolina Heritage Railroad Association and works with his local Historical Society.

The November 10th Saluda Train Tales begins at 7:00 PM at the Saluda Historic Depot and Museum located on Main Street in Saluda, NC. Train Tales is a free event, although donations are welcomed. Doors for the event will open at 6:30.

Preserving Saluda’s Past for its Future

Featured Photograph – “Saluda Time”

Join us on Facebook where we have a great time sharing and enjoying vintage Saluda photographs. This one has been a favorite. Maybe that’s because folks have always loved to sit on Main Street and watch people go by. Some even feel that when they do, time just goes around them. Maybe that is what we refer to as “Saluda Time.” Featured is a scene from the early 1960s with Alfred Laughter, Hamp Middleton and Herbert Middleton who just might have been on Saluda Time. Wouldn’t you want to know what they were talking about? Photo courtesy of Rob Morse. To share a photo, send to [email protected] or notify us on Facebook Messenger.

Our Next Meeting

Due to the observation of Veteran’s Day, we have moved our next meeting date to Friday, November 17, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Saluda Public Library. The public is invited to attend. For scheduled meetings, updates, or cancellations, please visit our Facebook page www.facebook.com/historicsaluda for more information. Join us and see what it is all about!

Fall at River Dog Run

At River Dog Run, we love Fall most of all! Crisp clean air and beautiful foliage bring wonderful visitors to the mountains, and we enjoy being busy. It is time to start thinking of the holidays and getting together to rejoice and be thankful for our bountiful lives.

We have an abundance of fall color schemes to help you decorate for the season; spice up the ambience with velvet and decoupage pumpkins that make excellent hostess gifts or for your own home. And we have gone to the dogs! We have dog doorstops and some that sit well on a table or in a corner. Best behaved dogs you will ever have! We are very dog friendly ( with a name like River Dog Run you better be!) as we have water and treats for our well-behaved four-legged friends.

We have a new selection of handmade cards that are exquisite! Kimberly Anderson does the original hummingbird artwork and these beautiful prints can be sold individually or as a set that are perfect for a note or a gift.

To lighten up the shorter days, we have unique lamps with shades made from the old Chenille bedspread yarn. We have pairs and single lamps that can light up a room or hallway perfectly. We offer all size lamps…tall or short, we can brighten up a space. So come see our illumination opportunities for your home.

For cooler weather we have rompers in fall colors that are a perfect match for a turtleneck and leggings. Or when the weather turns colder a sweater works too! We have consistently sold out of them so come in while the selection is good!

Our pottery is perfect for the holidays. A mushroom quiche or baked brie speaks to parties or family gatherings. Arrive with a blueberry cobbler or baked artichoke dip and you will be a welcome guest! The recipes are mouthwatering so they can be enough of a gift without baking anything!

Our eclectic artwork is locally sourced and has faces that are unforgettable. The bears, foxes and sheep look right back at you! Oils, prints and mirrors round out the selection so come in and see what might work as a gift or for your own home.

It is not too early to think about gifts for the holidays! We offer unique tea towels and candles that just might fit in your stocking or your friends!

For your convenience, we are open seven days a week.

Monday through Saturday 11AM until 5PM and Sunday noon till 4PM.

We can be reached at 828.551-1461 for a gift emergency!

Happy Thanksgiving and count your blessings…

we are certainly blessed to be in this area this time of year!

The Orchard Inn & Newman's Restaurant & Spa

On my morning walk with my Boxer girl today there was a chill in the air and a distinct smell of the woods that foretells the coming of Fall. There's a good reason why this is the most popular time of year in the mountains of Western North Carolina - because it's just so amazingly beautiful. Not only are the colors of the changing leaves fabulous but it's also the crisp clean quality of the fresh air that's equally as fantastic. As you ascend the winding driveway to our 12-acre elegant mountain oasis, restaurant and spa, framed with beautiful reblooming azaleas and the last of our summer hydrangea flowers, the stress of normal day to day life immediately starts to drift away. The official welcome committee (our Boxer - Roxy) will be standing by to challenge you with a stick and walk you up the steps to our antebellum front porch where she will attempt to lure you into a game of tug of war. Don't be tempted - you're sure to lose. Welcome to the Orchard Inn & Spa and Newman's Restaurant where the temperature is cool, the atmosphere is serene and the hospitality warm. Come help us celebrate 97 years of gracious southern living.

Our fine dining restaurant, Newman's, continues to receive high accolades from food critics far and wide and sells out most every meal. Voted by Our State Magazine as one of the top 14 "must experience restaurants" in North Carolina. We have created a lovely all weather outside dining area on our back terrace with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains. We serve dinner every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights starting at 5:30 pm, and an incredible Brunch every Sunday beginning at 11:30 am. At Newman's Restaurant we strive to bring diners a true "farm to table" gastronomic experience. Treat yourself to a most creatively prepared and delicious fine dining culinary adventure! You don't have to be a guest of the Inn to enjoy a meal at Newman's. Our amazing 3-course brunch is only $45 and goes from 11:30-1:30 every Sunday. Our 4-course dinners are a great value at $89. Every seat in the elegant dining room has an awesome view of the Saluda mountains, and the fire table on our lower gazebo terrace is a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail, glass of wine or local beer prior to dinner. It's hard to find a better meal in the great culinary towns of Asheville, Greenville or Charleston. We are literally a diamond in the woods. Call 828-749-5471 now to book a table this weekend before it's too late. Now serving awesome cocktails and mixed beverages for your enjoyment!

There are still a few spots available for our Holiday Festivities - Thanksgiving is almost full but our Dickens' Dinners, Christmas & New Year's Eve Dinners have limited seating opportunities. Call to reserve.

Our Spa is open and all are welcome. We've created a very zen-like environment where you can de-stress, unwind, relax and be pampered with an array of therapeutic massages or restorative facials by highly skilled therapists. It's a perfect place to have a girl's afternoon off and sit by the waterfall while sipping a glass of wine after a heavenly treatment. The Koi fish are waiting to greet you so come check us out. We are now offering all organic healing products from Appalachian Growers.

We look forward to greeting you soon!
