Living Out A Passion for Service

"I met this very special person, Imari, and her mother when I was the Resident Coordinator here on the property. I get to talk to the children in the afternoon when they stop in the office after school to chat." That's how it all started for Berthella Graham, Assistant Community Manager at the Waters at West Ashley Apartments in Charleston, South Carolina. Little did she know that this would lead to a new friend and a dream fulfilled for eight-year-old Imari.

Berthella, known by most as Ms. Bert, said, "I knew Imari and her mom were moving into a new apartment. I asked her what she wanted for her room, and she said 'a bed.' I have a friend that does outreach. I immediately contacted her and told her what I was looking for and that I needed her help."

The friend was able to source a bed, while another of Ms. Bert's contacts donated Target gift cards to purchase a comforter, sheets, pillows, and bedding. Ms. Bert said, "Her mom was happy, but Imari was ecstatic!"

Ms. Bert started working for Atlantic Housing back in April 2022, and she is truly making a difference in the lives of residents at Waters at West Ashley. She says, "I feel like in order to live your best life ever, you need to share and try to help motivate others....I try to be that role model everyday by being professional with my actions and words, to assure everyone that they matter. I help when needed and try to find and assist with their needs to make their lives better."

Kudos to Ms. Bert and her friends for making this happen! We hope you enjoy your new bed, Imari!

Housing Heroes

The staff at Windover Palms in Melbourne, Florida received recognition from the Department of Veterans Affairs for helping to house over 75 homeless veterans in the last two years. Some of the veterans came from desperate circumstances, such as a 42-year-old and his wife who were living in their car, and a mom and her daughter who were escaping a domestic violence situation. Community Manager Deborah Thornton said, "The veterans have social workers that reach out to properties for availability. We've helped by providing safe, clean and affordable housing, a place to call home. Windover is making a difference. The residents express how they are appreciative of all we do and the changes that have come."
