JFS Family and Friends –

Growing up in the Midwest, fall was always such a beautiful season. The leaves would turn magical colors and the air would get coole. It was a time for apple picking, roasting marshmallows, and fires in the fireplace as the nights turned cool. As we welcomed the new year, Sukkahs began going up in preparation for Sukkot and we looked forward to visiting our friends and families and enjoying a meal outside under the beautiful night sky.

One of the beautiful traditions during Sukkot is the welcoming of Ushpizin (guests) into our Sukkah. The inspiration for this idea of welcoming guests goes back to our first patriarch, Abraham, who would sit outside waiting for the opportunity to invite wayfarers into the shade of his tent and to share a meal with them. How appropriate that Global Diversity Awareness Month is observed in October following the holiday of Sukkot which celebrates the mitzvah of welcoming guests into our homes!

Global Diversity Awareness month is a time to recognize and celebrate our common humanity in addition to the unique and individual differences that are a part of each of our identities. It is a time to celebrate the positive impact diverse voices can have on a company, our community, and society at large. It’s also a time to reflect on the obstacles and barriers present today and to commit to taking the steps we can take, as companies, as individuals, and as a community to overcome them.

Here at JFS, we are committed to making sure that our agency continues to be a welcoming place to anyone in our community that is seeking assistance, direction, or resources. In support of these efforts, we have engaged an expert in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to guide us through a process of self-examination so that we can ensure that everyone feels respected, valued, and included when they come to JFS. As part of this process we have created a DEI council made up of representatives from all parts of our agency to help guide our work.

If you are interested in celebrating Global Diversity Awareness Month here are a few suggestions:
  •  Connect with people
  • Make a friend on the other side of the world. Modern technology allows us to learn almost anything we want to learn about people’s lives through social media and other online channels.
  • Learn about another culture
  • If you can’t experience the"‘real thing" through travel or another person, indulge in listening to international music or watching international movies.
  • Seek out cultural festivals and/or celebrations from diverse communities
  •  Make an effort to stay informed.
  • Keeping up with global happenings and events may be emotionally tragic at times, but it can also be extremely informative in daily life, as we are all connected in one form or another.

Hopefully, working together, we will begin to build a community where everyone feels respected, accepted and valued and can bring their whole selves to work, to worship and to friends and family.

Take care,
Carl

We especially thank these volunteers who delivered meals near and far on September 2nd:

Sol Hamburg, Sandy Harris, Barbara Kalmans, Marc Margolis, Beverley Marks, Barbara Pauly, Nancy Picus, Michael Richker, Vicky Richker, Ellen Robinson, Priscilla Roosth, Thomas Roosth, Elizabeth Rubinsky, Jeff Shankman, Laura Signet, Glenda Waldman, and Terry Waldman.

In addition to our volunteer drivers, we were able to share a message of sweetness to everyone through the beautiful handmade New Years cards provided by volunteers. This year we especially thank Amy Brazda for adding more cards this year to complete our wishes for a good New Year!

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT: Meet Sandy Harris! Sandy is a native Houstonian who has known about JFS all of her life and is so happy and proud to help support the agency as a multifaceted volunteer. Being involved in the Jewish and general communities is part of Sandy’s DNA. Working part-time and wanting to do valuable and satisfying activities, Sandy has helped over the years with MD Anderson, Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, Congregation Emanu El, SEARCH Homeless Services, and Meals on Wheels at the JCC. In recent years Sandy has helped JFS by creating COVID Cards of Caring for our Seniors and by being a delivery driver for our holiday meals. Her recent Rosh Hashana meal delivery took her on quite a journey as she doggedly tracked down a JFS client “on the move.” When the beautiful food was delivered, Sandy recalled the client’s gratitude which made the delivery well worth the effort. For anyone who is considering volunteering with JFS, Sandy says, “It is a very good place to put your time and energy! When you see who is receiving the support of the agency, you feel so good about helping JFS achieve its goals!” Sandy’s warmth and enthusiasm is evident in her work as a teacher for “Laughter Yoga” which she shares with seniors in the Houston area. We are fortunate to have her among our cadre of wonderful volunteers and look forward to having her involved with JFS for many years to come.
Volunteers Needed: Please Consider Helping Us!
  • We are still trying to grow our volunteer ranks of JFS Express Drivers. Often JFS clients need a lift to an appointment and JFS drivers are a wonderful resource. To become part of the JFS Express team you’ll need a car and a good driving record, auto insurance to be used as the primary source of insurance, a background check and a current HIPAA quiz. Past JFS Express members need to renew their HIPAA and motor vehicle driving records.

  • We are looking to train more Friendly Visitors to meet on a weekly basis with a senior JFS client. This is a wonderful way to make a personal connection with someone and share friendship. HIPAA, background screening, and training are prerequisites for the Friendly Visitor opportunity.
If you are interested in one of these opportunities, just contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Melanie Cole Goldberg at: mcolegoldberg@jfshouston.org.

Current volunteers should go to the Opportunities tab on the Volunteer Portal. New Volunteers or volunteers not in the Portal should go to: https://www.jfshouston.org/get-involved/volunteer .
