Hello GLF friends and supporters,
I’m pleased to be writing the 12th issue of News from the GLF. This fall has been busy and it is nice to pause and reflect on all that the GLF has accomplished as we work to support Goodnow.
I would first like to thank all of you who sponsored, donated, and/or attended the gala at The Wayside Inn in September. The positive energy was apparent with friends meeting up for the first time after the summer and after a year of pandemic protocols. We celebrated the Library, our friends and neighbors, and our local businesses. To put it simply, coming together as a community felt really great!
In October, the GLF hosted both the Book Nook’s in-person Book Sale and our first in-person Be Bold event since January of 2020. It was a joy to see lots of people reconnecting in the Community Room – masks and all. Meanwhile, Kristin Schneider and I are very happy to be back in the Library to work. You can find us in the GLF office off the Historical Octagon on Goodnow’s second floor. We would welcome your visit! The connections with each other, the Library staff, and the patrons make our jobs more fulfilling. The Goodnow Library is a community hub — a place not only to read, write, and learn, but a place to gather and socialize. We fully embrace this notion!
As we head towards the holiday season, we cheer for this renewed sense of connection and we look forward to more collaboration with other groups and businesses in the community. Of course as always, we express our GRATITUDE … for all of YOU and everything you do to support Goodnow and the GLF.

It’s that time of year again: Mailboxes are starting to fill with holiday catalogs and signs of the upcoming winter season. But did you also notice that a letter from the GLF popped into your mailbox this week? Please do open!
This important letter is our Annual Appeal. The GLF relies upon the unrestricted money raised from this Appeal so that we can continue doing what we do best — supporting Goodnow by providing funds for renovations, technology, programs, and activities.
Participation matters and gifts of all sizes make a difference. Last year 363 donors contributed to the GLF. Our goal is an increase of 10% to reach 400 donors. Will you be one of them? Please join us in this challenge to expand the network of GLF supporters!

Last month, the GLF’s Book Nook hosted an in-person Book Sale in in the Community Room. We extend many thanks to all of you who donated books and to all of you who came to the sale. There were browsers and buyers of all ages. Sudbury Family Network provided arts & crafts for the kids, and many of these young readers got their first library card and left with arms full of books! All proceeds from the sale go towards programs and activities at Goodnow.

The Goodnow Library Foundation launched its popular Be Bold Speaker Series in 2017. The aim of these evenings is to educate and connect members of our community through discussion and the sharing of viewpoints. Since then, the GLF has coordinated over a dozen events featuring approximately 20 speakers and bringing in more than 500 audience members. To learn about past Be Bold events, please click HERE. The Library’s Halloween Fest was a huge success! More than 650 people — many in creative costume — visited Goodnow this past Saturday. Many thanks go to the Sudbury Family Network who co-sponsored this event.
The youngest patrons were treated to a scavenger hunt, pumpkin carving, and an abundance of arts and crafts. In addition, the Library held a fun scarecrow contest. Check out the winners below!

In addition to all the Halloween activities, attendees could pay a visit to the NOW Lab and meet Marc during Halloween Fest. You too can visit Marc on Wednesday nights from 6-8 in the NOW Lab. He will show you how GarageBand works with the keyboard and how you can use it at home.

In 2018, the GLF celebrated the grand opening of the Sara Sherman NOW Lab after months of planning and fundraising. Today, we are excited that Sudbury's own makerspace is open once again. Come visit! (And lest you think the NOW Lab is just for youth, think again. Below you can see the work of two local artists who recently got certified to use the laser cutter.) |

You can register for a 3 week Lego Mindstorms program in the NOW Lab where you will learn how to build and program a simple robot. Please check the Library’s events calendar HERE for more information.

Have you ever wanted to test out a power washer, a telescope, or even a set of chess or Mahjong, but you just weren’t ready to commit to making a purchase? The Library of Things is for you! Come view the collection of non-traditional items that patrons 18 years of age or older can check out for up to 14 days. These items are currently on display in front of the Sara Sherman NOW Lab. In February 2020, bookMARKED — an initiative of Bethany Shaw of the Sudbury Art Association and Amy Wilson Sheldon of A Lifely Read — put out a call for postcard-sized art depicting a "book that has made an impression on you." They've been sharing many of the submissions from around the world on Instagram, but earlier this week they finally got to install the exhibit in Goodnow, right in front of the NOW Lab. Come take a peek!
