SoCalBio Mourns the Loss of Mr. Roy Doumani, an Entrepreneur,
Philanthropist
, and Educator
SoCalBio is saddened by the passing away of our dear friend Mr. Roy Doumani of the UCLA Business of Science Center. Roy was a staunch advocate and booster of the Los Angeles bioscience community. He was a quiet but forceful driver of change at UCLA to encourage more life-science entrepreneurial activities to help develop life-saving products. For more than twenty years, he helped create and fund numerous UCLA spin-offs, including Agensys, Neural Analytics, Momentum Biosciences, Spinal Singularity, Trethera Corp., NeuCures, Inc., and Kite Biopharma. He was a kind and caring person who should always be remembered as one of Los Angeles' Biotech Heroes. We will always miss him.

Will NIH See Budget Cuts in 2020?
FierceBiotech says President Trump's budget proposals for 2020 seek significant cuts for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). "
The plan is allocating $35.4 billion for the NIH-estimated to be somewhere between $4.5 and $6 billion less than in the current financial year-and is accompanied by other cuts including a $1 billion reduction for the NSF."

Will California Voters Approve a $5 Billion Bond on November 2020 to Keep the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine Alive?
California Stem Cell Report says that the California stem cell agency expects to run out of cash by the end of this year. It is hoping that voters will approve, in November of 2020, another $5 billion to carry on with its 14-year-old program. It is a pretty big ask, but the agency's boosters are counting on one factor that may tip voter sentiments in favor of passing the new stem cell proposition. Read the report to know more.
