We are grateful for all of the artists and visitors who joined us for the opening and Artist Roundtable for Collective Arising: The Insistence of Black Bay Area Artists. IN MEMORIAM
The Museum of Sonoma County remembers Mary Fuller McChesney who died on May 4 at the age of 99 in Petaluma. McChesney was a prolific and respected sculptor as well as an influential art historian and critic who wrote mostly about the California art scene of the mid-twentieth century. MSC was fortunate to recently acquire several of Mary Fuller McChesney's sculptures for the permanent collection thanks to the efforts of Dennis Calabi, art dealer, friend of the artist, and member of the Museum’s collections committee. Profiles of her life and career can be found in the Press Democrat and and New York Times.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITY
Deadline for submissions extended to July 15th for the Petaluma Arts Center’s juried exhibition
Agri-CULTURED.

Agri-CULTURED explores cross-cultural intersections of food and farming in our region. The project brings together food producers, purveyors, and artists who work locally and align with global concerns of sustainable practice and cultural memory. It not only bridges art, science, and agriculture but also engages the spheres of hospitality, tourism, and the economy of Sonoma County.

Current Exhibitions

June 25 - November 27, 2022

Collective Arising: The Insistence of Black Bay Area Artists is co-curated by Ashara Ekundayo and Lucia Olubunmi R. Momoh and features eleven interdisciplinary, multigenerational artists who have all belonged to Black, femme, and queer artist collectives in the San Francisco Bay Area, including nure collective, 3.9 art collective, House of Malico, CTRL+SHIFT collective and the recently formed Black [Space] Residency. These collectives helped push Northern California in a boldly progressive direction at a pivotal moment for the nation. Collective Arising includes a multiplicity of media from painting and sculpture to mixed media, photography, and video.
February 19 - September 11, 2022

This exhibition features over fifty little-known photographs by Ansel Adams (1902–1984) and depict how Japanese Americans bore their treatment at the Manzanar incarceration camp in central California. Taken during World War II, the black and white images were originally published in Adams' book Born Free and Equal (1944) in which he protested what he called the "enforced exodus" of American citizens within their own country.

February 5 - September 11, 2022

Featuring historic objects from the Museum’s Song Wong Bourbeau collection, as well as contemporary items generously provided from the Redwood Empire Chinese Association (RECA), the Year of the Tiger explores and recognizes the long history and continuity of Chinese traditions.
August 20, 2021 - September 11, 2022

Light, Clay, and Copper features three important collections from the Museum of Sonoma County: The photographs of Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel, the pottery of Marguerite Wildenhain, and the metalwork of Harry Dixon. Each was a master of their artform and all were contemporaries that shared ideals and influences. Light, Clay, and Copper explores the connections and shared experiences of these four remarkable artists.
