SoIndy Winter Summit
There were about 50 residents and stakeholders who attended the SoIndy Winter Summit on December 12, 2018. Attendees learned about the programs of Southeast Community Services (SECS) from Director, Terri Garcia, and each of the 7 action teams gave reports. All of the amendments to the workplan passed.

Southeast Community Services accomplished the following in 2018:
  • Job coaches helped place 63 people in jobs with an average starting wage of $12.60.
  • More than 30 students graduated from our HSE (High School Equivalency) classes and nine people were able to further their careers through technical training scholarships.
  • On average, our neighbors were able to raise their credit scores by 56 points and increase their net worth by an average of $3,088 by working with our financial coaches.

Thanks to everyone who donated 136 socks, gloves and hats that were divided between SECS and Garfield Park Library. You can listen to the summit interviews produced by WQRT-LP 99.1FM and Katie Carlson below.

A Southeast Community Services Success Story:
Tracy started working with SECS in February of 2015. When he first began meeting with our coaches, Tracy had been unemployed for several months and was looking for financial and career coaching. By June of that year, Tracy had completed vocational training through Indiana Plan and started his electrician apprenticeship at Banta Electrical with a starting wage of $10.25 an hour. As of September 2018, Tracy's hourly wage has more than doubled to $22.90 and with two and a half years left until he completes his apprenticeship and becomes a Journeyman, Tracy's earning potential will continue to rise.
