Why Get Involved?

I recently asked one of our SoIndy volunteers how she got involved in her neighborhood and SoIndy? She replied, "My husband and I have lived in the Garfield Park Neighborhood for a while now, but only really got involved within the last few years. We started seeing some problems in our neighborhood, so we decided to take our concerns to the neighborhood association. That negative situation has turned into such a positive experience for us. At neighborhood meetings we hear from knowledgeable guest speakers and learn about upcoming events happening in our community. We realized we couldn’t just sit back and wait for someone else to make the changes.  We later joined SoIndy to help make improvements to our community, to meet new neighbors in the area and to make a difference on the Southside. The reason you get involved doesn’t matter; just do it.

Do you have ideas of ways to improve the Southside? We have a team for that. Do you like to plan parties and events? We have a team for that. Do you think we need better housing options in our area? We have a team for that. Do you want to help make improvements on Shelby Street or Madison Avenue? We have teams for that. Don’t like to join teams, but want to meet people from the area? Come to one of our many SoIndy events. "
First Friday on Shelby Street - March 1, 2019
Support SoIndy's art community while catching up with friends and neighbors at these great destinations:
now accepting applications for 5 affordable houses
An informational meeting and tour of the houses will take place on March 11 at 7 p.m. at Tube Factory, 1125 Cruft St. Indianapolis, IN 46203 and will be live on the Tube’s Facebook page. Also, houses in the program will be open for visitors to tour at the First Friday celebration on the block on March 1. Applicants may work in fields such as
architecture, culinary art, curation, visual art, public art, furniture, fashion, craft, design, film, writing, performing arts, music, theater, placemaking, and socially engaged art.

The program works as land trust for artist housing. The idea is to keep the houses outside of market forces and maintain an affordable place for artists to be able to be homeowners in the community. The houses used in this program previously sat vacant, some for many years. No existing residents were displaced as the partnership acquired the houses.

Barringer's Tavern Grand Reopening in the South Village Neighborhood
Barringer’s Tavern, located at 2535 S. Meridian, will be re-established mid-March, 2019. Originally established in 1879, Barringer's Tavern closed in 2014. “The five partners are highly motivated to be part of the South Meridian corridor revitalization” says partner Julie Dolen. According to partner Patrick O'Donnell, "We are incredibly excited and honored to bring Barringer's Tavern back to the South Village community."
Barringer's participated in LISC's Small Business Facade and Property Improvement Program which provides matching grants to property owners willing to renovate the street-front exteriors of their structures. Click HERE for more information about the program.
