Moving forward on new Police HQ & SoMi Emergency Operations Center
Progress is being made on the city's plans to build a new Emergency Operations Center and police headquarters. The City Commission gave its go-ahead to hire a company to begin demolition of the old inspection station on 58th and SW 69th Street, where the new facilities will be located.

The city is also in the process of working to design the new facility. Once completed, South Miami will have a new base of operations from which to serve residents during emergencies such as hurricanes. It will also have a state-of-the-art police headquarters to serve residents the rest of the year.
4th events canceled
Remember, due to health considerations, SoMi's 4th of July events have been canceled this year.
Independence Day garbage changes
Due to the July 4th holiday, garbage collection days have been changed.

The city will be observing the holiday on Monday, July 5th. Therefore, all garbage collection scheduled for Monday, July 5th will be collected on Tuesday. All garbage collection scheduled for Tuesday, July 6th will be collected on Wednesday.
SoMi pledges $5,000 to Pelican Harbor
As part of SoMi's commitment to help the environment and wildlife, the city has just allocated $5,000 to be donated to the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station.

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick, injured or orphaned brown pelicans, seabirds, and other native wildlife, as well as the preservation and protection of these species through educational and scientific means.
SoMi supports Miami-Dade Septic to Sewer Task Force

Did you know there are over 2,300 properties in South Miami that are not connected to a sewer system and still relying on septic tanks?

Septic tanks treat and dispose of wastewater in an underground drain field. But issues such as improper maintenance, aging infrastructure, and groundwater levels may hinder septic tanks from functioning as designed and could pollute the environment.

Miami-Dade County is creating a task force to study issues related to converting from septic tanks to the sewer system, and South Miami is supporting the effort.

South Miami accounts for approximately two percent of the remaining septic systems county-wide.
COVID rental assistance is available
If you need help paying rent due to COVID-19, you may qualify for help.

The Emergency Rental Assistance Program 2.3 provides rental payment assistance for up to 12 months in arrears, if you meet certain income qualifications and are experiencing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The amount of rental assistance you receive will depend on the amount of unpaid rent. 

Applications are accepted until Friday, July 9 at 5 p.m.
Free Curbside/Walk-In Summer Meals for Students
Miami-Dade County Public Schools is launching a plan to provide free meals to students during the summer break at various locations. Food insecurity is a serious concern in our community.

The new City of South Miami Twelve Month Activity Report has just been released.

This year, the city renewed its commitment to communication and transparency by taking several bold steps forward. The report is one element of that campaign. It is a summary of the city's progress over the past year in fiscal management, green initiatives, parks and recreation improvements, capital projects, private development, and more.

The past 12 months have been challenging for everyone. Despite the unprecedented times, the vision and leadership of the Mayor and City Commission provided the guidance for our city to not only persevere but succeed.
