Communication Strategy Essential to Success of Membership Restructure
ASAE | Julia O’Connor | August 23, 2022

When the International Association of Movers reconfigured its membership structure to help combat inflation, a crucial part of members accepting it was the communications strategy. Using member advocates, webinars, and tailored outreach, IAM successfully helped members embrace the new membership paradigm. Figuring how best to restructure our membership categories and pricing model was a huge undertaking for the International Association of Movers, but that was only half the battle. The other half was effectively communicating the new structure to members, so they embraced the changes rather than drop their membership.
ICE Seeks Permanent Remote I-9 Document Review
HR Dive | Kate Tornone |August 17, 2022

The federal government has moved to permanently allow employers to review Form I-9 identification documents remotely, according to a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to be formally published Aug. 18. If finalized, the rule would create a framework under which the U.S. Department of Homeland Security could “pilot various options, respond to emergencies similar to the COVID-19 pandemic, or implement permanent flexibilities upon a specific determination as to level of security, including, but not limited to, fraud risk.” Additionally, the agency proposed a change to Form I-9 that would have an employer indicate whether it inspected the documents remotely.
Empathy Isn’t Enough. Why Inclusive Design Principles Unlock What Leaders Need
Fast Company | Katie Schlott | August 24, 2022
As an advisor to Fortune 100 companies, I’ve witnessed first-hand how inclusive design leads to products, services, and innovations that better serve our customers and clients. When it comes to leadership, empathy isn’t the magic bullet for creating a better workplace. Yes, we can strive to relate to our colleagues, but it’s still impossible to fully grasp others’ lived experiences. There will always be a chasm that prevents us from fully relating to each other, whether it’s race, age, gender, socioeconomic background, or even traumatic experiences.
Understanding America’s Labor Shortage
U.S. Chamber of Commerce | Stephanie Ferguson | August 19, 2022

In 2021, businesses added an unprecedented 3.8 million jobs. But at the same time, workforce participation remains below pre-pandemic levels, meaning we have 3.4 million fewer Americans working today compared to February of 2020.

We hear every day from our member companies—of every size and industry, across nearly every state—they’re facing unprecedented challenges trying to find enough workers to fill open jobs. Right now, the latest data shows that we have over 10 million job openings in the U.S.—but only around 6 million unemployed workers.
We have a lot of jobs, but not enough workers to fill them. If every unemployed person in the country found a job, we would still have 5 million open jobs.
Why Professional Development and Upskilling Is Vital to Women of Color
Employee Benefits News | Deanna Cuadra | August 23, 2022

Rubina Malik, learning and development adviser and professor at Morehouse College
It takes just a glance at most business organizations to recognize that women of color rarely make it to C-suite positions. What has to change to see a different picture?
Women of color held just 13% of C-suite roles in 2021, according to a study by McKinsey and LeanIn.Org. To make matters worse, many women of color tend to face a larger gender wage gap than their white counterparts, with Latinas typically paid 49 cents per every white man's dollar, Indigenous women paid 50 cents and Black women paid 58 cents, compared to the average gender pay gap of 83 cents.
Long Story Short: Improve Your Attitude and Relationships in The Workplace
Employee Benefits News | Alyssa Place | August 19, 2022

If you're feeling on edge and burned out, take some time to slow down and reconnect with yourself, and your employees.
In this week's top stories, 95% of employees say their managers are making their work experience worse, according to HR software platform, Humu. To improve their dynamic and create a psychologically safe environment, managers need to improve soft skills like listening, problem solving and a positive attitude. "Things like creating structure and setting clear priorities, creating a sense of trust and recognizing people on your team are much more powerful predictors of whether people stay around and perform well," says Jessie Wisdom, co-founder and head of people science at Humu.
In Uncertain Times, the Best Strategy Is Adaptability
Harvard Business Review | Michael Mankins | August 24, 2022

Senior executives often lament, “If we only had better forecasts, we could devise better plans.” They pressure their teams to come up with more accurate projections for how their markets will evolve, competitors will respond, and consumers will react — thinking that forecast precision is the key to defining winning strategies. But attempting to develop precise forecasts is a fool’s errand. Meteorologist Edward Lorenz proved this nearly 60 years ago when he popularized “the butterfly effect.” He suggested: “A butterfly flaps its wings in the Amazonian jungle and subsequently a storm ravages half of Europe.”
Don’t Let Hierarchy Stifle Innovation
Harvard Business Review | Timothy R. Clark | August 23, 2022

In the team sport of innovation, the quality of interaction between teammates regulates the speed of discovery. If a team is healthy, the pattern of exchange will be free-flowing, candid, and energized. If it’s unhealthy, the team will retreat into silence, superficial niceness, or some combination of the two.
Much of the know-how required for innovation comes from the bottom of the organization — in other words, from local knowledge. Yet many non-management employees consider innovation outside the scope of their jobs. Even when they want to participate, they don’t because the organization’s tacit norms discourage it.
Why Payroll Is the Partner HR Needs to Build a Strong Benefits Strategy
American Payroll Association | Team Even | May 2, 2022

Payroll and HR have never needed each other more. Employees today prioritize their financial health, and that’s rapidly changing their pay and benefits expectations. Medical, dental, and vision care options no longer add up to a full benefits package. Employees want benefits that support their financial health too, such as earned wage access (EWA), emergency savings, and automatic budgeting. They also want greater say in how they’re paid. Market research firm Aggregate Insights (AI) recently surveyed 100 workers at companies with 25,000 or more employees.

5 Questions for HR To Ask Ahead of Open Enrollment Season
HR Executive | Alison Myers | August 30, 2022

As organizations head into open enrollment season, HR and benefits leaders have a tremendous opportunity to rethink their benefits program to get the most out of the offerings available to employees.
After all, the employee benefits program is the most visible insurance employers provide their employees and it, along with compensation, remains a critical tool when recruiting and retaining talent. That’s even more vital in today’s competitive job market.
In A Job Market Paradox, Why HR Leaders Should Focus on Communication
HR Executive | Kathryn Mayer | August 29, 2022

The past year has been a hot one for employees’ job prospects: Unemployment has been low and employee turnover has been high, in a phenomenon dubbed the Great Resignation. But as inflation has continued on an upward trajectory for months—hitting a 40-year-high of a 9.1% increase year-over-year in June—fears of a recession are running high. As a result, layoffs are becoming more common than they have in months, and job confidence is taking a dive.

NOTES FROM NAN & SUE

I got a call from my niece, Ella, asking if I had time (during the work week) to spend with her before she went back to school. Talk about feeling like the first kid picked in a school line up. I was elated that my baby wanted to spend time with me just before she had to go back to school.

I dropped everything and we had a blast! We went shopping for a day and spent the next day at Saylorville Marina riding the jet ski around. Moments I will never forget and pray she doesn't either.

Sue & her husband, John, have been enjoying the last weeks of summer with lake events, family & friends! She has also been raising funds for the Alzheimer's Association, which is a cause near & dear to her heart. To donate click here: http://www.alz.org/

As everyone is, work and life are busy, but if you can, grab on to those special moments, be kind and generous with your blessings and here's hoping you create the exhilaration of being picked first at school for the dodgeball game! ;)
