Dear Partners and Advocates,
Another summer season is coming to an end; children,  families and teachers throughout Hillsborough County are preparing for another school year. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the health and wellbeing of our community. This school year, I strongly encourage parents and caregivers to be aware of your child's social and emotional skills. The pandemic has caused many children and adults to feel stressed and anxious, social media and our 24-hour news cycle has heighted our children's awareness of the dangers associated with COVID-19. A child's ability to self-regulate, interact well with others and make decisions are important to their academic and emotional success. Studies show that children from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade are more successful and have healthier relationships with their peers when taught social-emotional skills at home and in school.
Children often model the behaviors of their parents, so remember to monitor your actions as a parent, to be able to be there for your children. Also, be a good listener and be empathetic to your child's concerns which helps them know that they can express themselves openly and honestly. Strong social-emotional skills allow children to complete difficult assignments, be mindful of their actions and to ask for help when they need it.  Click here to visit the Hillsborough Community College Conscious Awareness Learning Model resource page, for more resources on social-emotional learning.

I wish everyone a safe and successful school year!

My best,

                                               GRAND OPENING!
On Friday July 16th, we held the Grand Opening Ceremony of the newly renovated Children's Board Family Resource Center in Plant City.  There were about 120 children, families and residents that attended the event.  Thank you to our Board of Directors, past Board Members, Plant City Commissioners, Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, Glazer Children's Museum,  Lutheran Services Florida and residents for coming out to our event.
The 7,900 square foot Children's Board Family Resource Center in Plant City is located at 301 North Palmer Street, Plant City, FL 33563 in downtown Plant City. This is one of seven centers strategically placed throughout Hillsborough County that offer universal services such as developmental play groups, developmental screenings, health and safety education, and well-child visits at no cost. Click here to learn more about the programs and services provided at the Family Resource Centers.

The Children's Board has funded community based summer programs through our Summer Enhancement Grants for the past seven years. An emerging need was brought to the attention of our Board and Executive Director that would give more children access to local attractions.  The Children's Board reached out to local attractions and this summer we completed our third year of the Summer Passport Program. Students that are members of the Children's Board  from 6-14 years of age received one to two week slots to attend summer camp at The Straz Center for the Performing Arts, The Florida Aquarium, M.O.S.I., Glazer Children's Museum, Tampa Museum of Art, Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park, and the Lighting. This allowed students throughout Hillsborough County access to marine science, technology, the performing and visual arts that would otherwise not have the opportunity for this kind of exposure. We currently operate seven Children's Board Family Resource Centers.
