You (and one guest) are specially invited to attend  "Social Justice Movie Night," featuring the film "Testing the Divide." The screening will be followed by a panel discussion about the persistence of housing segregation and its unparalleled significance as a social justice issue for our time.

The event is co-sponsored by:
  • the Anne Arundel County Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
  • the Anne Arundel County Human Relations Commission
  • Arundel Community Development Services

Film Screening
The 41-minute documentary, Testing the Divide, chronicles one of the most concentrated investigations of discrimination by real estate agents since the enactment of America's landmark fair housing law. Newsday found evidence of widespread separate and unequal treatment of potential minority homebuyers and minority communities on Long Island. The three-year probe strongly indicates that house hunting in one of the nation's most segregated suburbs poses substantial risks of discrimination, with black buyers chancing disadvantages almost half the time they enlist brokers.

Panel Discussion
The discussion will be moderated by Asha Smith, Office of the County Executive, Anne Arundel County's Equal Opportunity and Human Relations Officer.

Our esteemed panelists are:
  • Cleveland Horton, Deputy Director, Maryland Commission on Civil Rights
  • Erin Karpewicz, Executive Director, Arundel Community Development Services
  • Colette Massengale, Esq., Senior Policy Representative, National Association of Realtors
  • Susan McClannahan, Fair Housing Program Manager, Equal Rights Center
