ISBNPA Socioeconomic Inequalities SIG

Welcome!

Dear SIG Members,

Welcome to the Socioeconomic Inequalities SIG’s April newsletter!

Socioeconomic inequalities remain a pressing challenge. Despite significant improvements, disparities and access to opportunities continue to overwhelm various communities around the world. Addressing socioeconomic inequalities is complex and it requires concerted efforts to drive meaningful change at societal level. Our team has worked hard to raise awareness and advocate change where we can. This newsletter is a compilation of some of the work our members are striving in their domain to address some of the challenges. We hope you will enjoy the newsletter and where possible we invite you to join our members in their various initiatives.

Socioeconomic Inequalities pre-conference workshop: Monday, May 20

“Using a World Cafe Approach of Community Engagement to Address Socioeconomic Inequalities in Cancer Prevention and Management.”

Facilitators: Mary Hearst, University of Minnesota School of Nursing; Rebecca Beeken, PhD, University of Leeds, UK; Linda Trinh, PhD, University of Toronto, Canada; Emily Hill, PhD, RDN, University of Colorado, USA

Description: The purpose of this workshop is to provide an introduction and apply the World Café process as a tool for community engagement and action. The World Cafe crosses socioeconomic boundaries and can illuminate determinants and strategies for supporting healthy nutrition and physical activity behaviors to reduce the risk of developing cancer and improve the outcomes after a cancer diagnosis. To reduce inequalities in cancer we need to ensure we are engaging with a range of communities to support their participation in our research studies and ensure that the interventions we develop are relevant and effective across socioeconomic conditions. A World Café is a strengths-based, culturally responsive, and participatory approach for engaging stakeholders in your research that both opens the research for a broader socioeconomic base and, at the same time, works as a more informal way for individuals to share opinions. The process is adaptable and can be used for diverse topic areas ranging from answering primary questions, validating and adding to existing data collections. As part of this workshop attendees will take part in an example World Cafe to explore experiences, challenges and priorities for our research community around addressing socioeconomic inequalities in cancer within behavioral nutrition and physical activity studies.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION

Dr Chien Ju Ting is currently seeking research funding from the Kate Edger Foundation, New Zealand to conduct a corpus-assisted discourse analysis to explore women's representation in sport print media (i.e.., newspaper) in New Zealand. The data will come from NZ Herald newspaper sports sections between 2022 and 2023 because of the significant events relating to women’s sport in New Zealand - The postponement of the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup to 2022, the success of New Zealand athletes at the 2022 Winter Olympics, and FIFA women’s world cup. These events offer an interesting window for us to look into how the changing discourse may have occurred in New Zealand and how we can better support policy and community efforts. The projects have been designed to make important contributions to women in sports.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Success stories

On February 21, Chien published in The Conversation, which is a network of nonprofit media outlets publishing news stories and research reports online, with accompanying expert commentary and analysis. In just two weeks, her article titled “Taiwan’s Indigenous languages are under threat – what can NZ learn from their successes and failures?” has garnered nearly 9000 reads and has been widely shared by numerous news outlets. This underscores the effectiveness of knowledge mobilisation and translation. She aspires to reach wider audiences beyond academic journals.
