Sokol SF Newsletter - August 2021
|
|
Dear Sokol SF Members and Friends of Sokol,
Welcome to our Midsummer electronic Newsletter.
This month we remember a unique event from August 1968 in Golden Gate Park, when Shirley Temple, in solidarity with the Czech nation, participated in a protest against the invasion of Russian Army into Czechoslovakia.
We are proud of the 116 Czech athletes representing the Czech Republic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. In addition, we were cheering for two special American star swimmers with Czech heritage: Anika Apostalon and Kathleen Ledecky.
Please visit our website for a calendar of events which include our popular virtual Cooking demo in September, and Sokolský Běh Republiky in October.
Nazdar!
Jara Dusatko, President Sokol SF

Sokolský Běh Republiky 2021
Sunday, October 17
|
|
In the fall of 1919 - on the occasion of the first anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic, the Sokol organization prepared an unprecedented sporting event. It enabled the participation of as many falcons/sokols as possible. It was a relay where more than 8,500 falcons carried a case of greeting messages from 7 cities to Prague to president TG Masaryk on October 28, 1919.
One hundred years later, in 2019, Sokol Czech Republic decided to renew this tradition. They created the Sokol Run of the Republic and the celebration of October 28, 1918, as a series of runs organized by Sokol units throughout the Czech Republic which quickly became popular and turned into an annual event.
In 2020, 34 units from around the Czech Republic and two from abroad - Portland and Washington DC units - joined in the celebration with 2,062 runners (1,442 adults and 620 children)
Sokol San Francisco will take part in this celebration for the first time this fall. As October 28 this year falls on a Thursday we ill celebrate a few days earlier on Sunday October 17.
After the run we will celebrate and share our stories at a picnic.
More information about location, registration etc. is coming soon. You can also follow the links in the "information" tab and under "Zavody".
We are looking forward to seeing you at the starting line! Mark your calendars and start training!

Wine Tasting at Beaver Creek Winery
|
|
|
We had a sold-out event!
Thank you to our members and friends who joined our Beaver Creek Winery event in Middletown with Czech vintner Martin Pohl who proudly owns and operates an eco-friendly, organic, and biodynamic certified boutique winery.
We learned about his amazing reds, whites, and sparkling wines. We enjoyed some traditional chlebíčky as well as meeting new friends. The wines were wonderful; definitely worth the drive to Middletown!

Remembering 53 years since the Russian Invasion to Prague
|
|
Here is a transcript from SF Examiner & Chronicle
from August 25, 1968

Shirley Temple Black, just evacuated with other marooned Americans from Prague, paid a tearful tribute to Czech courage yesterday in Golden Gate Park.
The one-time child film star attended a rally of Bay Area residents of Czechoslovak descent in front of the Thomas G. Masaryk statue in the park’s Concourse of Heroes near the Rose Garden.
Masaryk was the first president of the Czech Republic after World War I.
200 PRESENT
More than 200 Czech Americans looked on as Mrs. Black, wearing a Czech national costume, laid a red carnation at the foot of the Masaryk statue.
She said the flower, “symbolized the courage and dedication of the Czechs,” and hoped it would give strength to the Bay Area people of Czech descent.
Mrs. Black, who was visiting in Prague at the time of the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia, described the Soviets as “barbarians.”
PURCHASED IN PRAGUE
Her costume (picture on the right), she said had been purchased in Prague 12 hours before the invasion.
She said that she had only slept three hours since returning to the United States but “there are too many important things to do now. I can sleep later. This is my first demonstration, but I believe in this one.” Mrs. Black told the crowd.
A FOREST OF SIGNS
A forest of signs bobbed up and down as the defeated Republican congressional candidate for San Mateo County, women present and wept.
One sign read: “Russian Pigs Get Out of CSR.”
Another Showed a picture of a tank with the caption, “Soviet Justice.”
