Slovak born Dr. Yara Salman is a Los Angeles based psychiatrist who works
with chronically medically ill patients.
Her experience with patients with cancer inspired her to co-write, with her friend-journalist Viera Lipcak, a book of interviews with cancer survivors mixed with Dr.Salman's expert advice on how to deal with common psychological challenges encountered
when dealing with such a serious and impactful illness.

Last Poem is Waiting for llustration!

Dear Sokol Members and Friends,
We are seeking your help in uniting
Art with Poetry, by asking for your illustrations of images evoked by poems previously submitted to our Poetry Competition. In the links below you will find the poems, which are waiting for illustrations.
With that we hope to elevate one beautiful form of art with another.
Let yourselves be inspired by the poems and create an original piece of art adhering to the following criteria: in either color or black-and-white, or just a sketch, we will leave it up to you and your imagination.
We only ask that you submit your illustration in the maximum size of A5 and send it to us in JPG or PDF format.
We are looking forward to seeing your skills. Thank you!

Over 50 people covered their hands in flour and sugar, rolled and cut some linzer cookies, decorated gingerbread, formed vanilla crescents, filled cookies with jam and chocolate cream, rolled and decorated shaved coconut snowmen ...
The creativity of our attendees was amazing! We made not just some traditional cookies you would expect but also some novelty cookies based on the traditions.
We had a fun, sweet smelling and deliciously tasting afternoon!

Vúdčí Postavy Raného Sokola San Francisko

30. ledna 1864) a Wencil C. Storek (nar. 14. února 1878). Oba sanfranciské podnikatele, spojovaly nejenom rodinné vazby, ale i původ z malé vesničky Jeníkov, pár kilometrů od Hlinska, kde už v polovině 19. století založil místní rodák Jan Adámek několik továren. A zřejmě právě tam se pravděpodobně učili podnikání a pracovali i Laštůvkové a Štorkové...

Invitation from
the Czech Consulate in Los Angeles
Treasures from the Archive of Sokol San Francisco
|
|
Vážení přátelé,
v lednu 2024 Kalifornii opět navštíví zmocněnec pro krajany Jiří Krátký, tentokrát pojede do Los Angeles a poté bude pokračovat dle dosavadních plánů do Salt Lake City.
Záměrně jsme jeho návštěvu sladili s malou oslavou u nás na generálním konzulátu - rádi bychom, abyste se k nám přidali na slavnostní otevření výstavy
|
|
Dear friends,
in January 2024, Jiří Krátký, the representative for compatriots, will visit California again; this time, he will go to Los Angeles and then continue to Salt Lake City according to the current plans.
We have deliberately coordinated his visit with a small celebration here at the Consulate General - we would like you to join us for the grand opening of the exhibition

představující nejzajímavější předměty, memorabilie, dokumenty z archivu Sokola San Francisco a několika dalších především soukromých archivů připomínajících více než stoletou historii české krajanské činnosti u Pacifiku.
Všechny předměty byly věnovány do sbírek Národního muzea v Praze (sportovní sbírka); některé najdou svůj nový domov též v knihovně Náprstkova muzea asijských, afrických a amerických kultur (kde je rozsáhlá krajanská sbírka) a knihovně exilového tisku Libri Prohibiti.
Tuto akci pořádáme k připomenutí dvou krajanských výročí:
120. výročí vzniku
Sokola San Francisko
100. výročí vzniku
Pasadena Beseda
Součástí krajanského odpoledne bude i prezentace budoucí publikace věnované historii krajanských spolků v Los Angeles a okolí.
Následovat bude neformální setkání s malou recepcí - a - doufejme - (velkým) překvapením.
Zarezervujte si proto odpoledne a večer v sobotu 27. ledna 2024.
Akce se zúčastní celé vedení Sokola San Francisko a doufáme v účast co největšího počtu spolků z Kalifornie. Rozešlete proto tento email svých členům.
Přesný rozpis akce Vám pošleme na začátku ledna 2024.
S pozdravem,
Amb. Jaroslav Olša, Jr.

presenting the most interesting items, memorabilia, documents from the Sokol San Francisco archive and several other primarily private archives commemorating more than a century of Czech expatriate activity in the Pacific.
All objects were donated to the collections of the National Museum in Prague (sports collection); some will also find a new home in the library of the Thimble Museum of Asian, African, and American Cultures (where there is an extensive expatriate collection) and the library of exiled Libri Prohibited.
We are organizing this event to commemorate two compatriot anniversaries:
120th anniversary of the founding
of San Francisco Sokol
100th anniversary of the founding
of Pasadena Beseda
The expatriate afternoon will also include the presentation of a future publication dedicated to the history of expatriate associations in Los Angeles and the surrounding area.
This will be followed by an informal meeting with a small reception - and - hopefully - a (big) surprise.
So reserve the afternoon and evening of Saturday, 27 January 2024.
The event will be attended by the entire leadership of Sokol San Francisco, and we hope for the participation of as many associations from California as possible. Therefore, send this email to your members.
We will send you the exact event schedule at the beginning of January 2024.
Best regards,
Amb. Jaroslav Olša, Jr.

Consulate in LA is Looking for Old Publications
As you likely read in our last newsletter, the Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles is trying to compile the most comprehensive collection of publications and memorabilia of the history of Czechs (and Slovaks) on the West Coast of the United States. Last year, he took over a large portion of Sokol SF's and other private collector's memorabilia, and a portion of those can be found today at the National Museum, Naprstkovo Museum, and the Library of Literature from individuals living in exile, Libri Prohibiti.
This leads us to turn to you, our readers, with an ask -- could you please let us know if you have any old issues of Sokol SF's Vestnik, Sokol Fresno's Vestnik, Sokol Los Angeles's Notes, or issues of the Czech Catholic Mission?
Moreover, there is also interest in one-off publications, flyers, and photos. If you are willing to donate these items (or allow us to borrow the items to be photocopied), please contact the Consul General directly at CzechConsulateLA@gmail.com or Sokol SF.
Thank you!
