Sokol SF Newsletter - July 2021
|
|
Dear Sokol SF Members and Friends of Sokol,
The month of July marks the first anniversary of issuing Sokol San Francisco newsletter electronically. It has proved a great new way to reach you and all Sokol family and friends, creating a new channel of communication.
As we are thankful for the gradual return to normal life where we can start meeting each other in person, we are planning fun new events, such as a visit to a winery with Czech owner and a hike in the Golden Gate Park. We will continue with our popular virtual cooking demo classes, and are excited about participating in “Sokolský Běh republiky” scheduled for October.
Please visit our website and Facebook pages for calendar and updates.
Wishing you all a safe and happy Summer!
Nazdar!
Jara Dusatko, President Sokol SF

Hike in Golden Gate Park
Sunday August 1 @ 9 am
|
|
|
Have you ever seen a buffalo up close? Did you know you only need to visit Golden Gate Park to see one (or a few)?
We would like to welcome you to our hike in Golden Gate Park. The hike will be easy as there is no elevation and it will be about 3 miles long. Everyone is welcome to join us.
Meeting place: in front of San Francisco Model Yacht Club at 9 am on Sunday 8/1.
We will head over to see the buffaloes at the Buffalo paddock, walk through the park to the Rose Garden, where a bust of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk is installed.
For those interested in beautiful views of San Francisco, we will stop at the De Young Museum, where you can take the elevator up, free of charge, and enjoy 360 degrees of views of San Francisco.
We will return back to the SFMYC.
The hike is children and dog friendly (except of the De Young Museum but we can take turns watching the pups)

Sokolský Běh Republiky 2021
Sunday, October 17
|
|
In the fall of 1919 - on the occasion of the first anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic, the Sokol organization prepared an unprecedented sporting event. It enabled the participation of as many falcons/sokols as possible. It was a relay where more than 8,500 falcons carried a case of greeting messages from 7 cities to Prague to president TG Masaryk on October 28, 1919.
One hundred years later, in 2019, Sokol Czech Republic decided to renew this tradition. They created the Sokol Run of the Republic and the celebration of October 28, 1918, as a series of runs organized by Sokol units throughout the Czech Republic which quickly became popular and turned into an annual event.
In 2020 34 units from around the Czech Republic and 2 from abroad - Portland and Washington DC units - joined in the celebration with 2,062 runners (1,442 adults and 620 children)
Sokol San Francisco will take part in this celebration for the first time this fall. As October 28 this year falls on a Thursday we ill celebrate a few days earlier on Sunday October 17.
After the run we will celebrate and share our stories at a picnic.
More information about location, registration etc. is coming soon.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the starting line! Mark your calendars and start training!
|
|
Are you interested in running/walking with us?
|
|
|
|
Sitting around a camp fire and singing, guitars playing, buřty sizzling over the fire...
Does it sound good? Can you help us put the event together?
We are looking for volunteers to help organize a Beach Táborak in the month of October or November.

"Dášeňka, the Lively Puppy"
Virtual Puppet Performance
|
|
On June 6th, Marka and Hanka of Theater DAMDAM dazzled audience members of all ages with their virtual theater performance of Dasenka, a lively puppy that never sits still, based on the beloved book by Czech children's author, Karel Čapek. The performance was streamed live from Prague via Zoom as smiling faces eagerly looked on from all over the United States and the Czech Republic. As the audience watched Dasenka grow up from puppyhood, they were also treated to three intertwined mini performances, including an interpretation of the classic tale of kocicka a pejsek (kitten and puppy) as they attempted to wash the floor of their home. If you weren't able to attend the performance, we invite you to watch it at the link below to see whether kocicka a pejsek succeeded!
Finally, we would like to give a special thanks to our friends at the Czech School of California for their co-sponsorship and collaboration on this wonderful event!

What a day! What a group!
We had 11 adults, 3 kids and 4 dogs join us on this gorgeous Sunday morning. The weather was spectacular and the views did not disappoint.
Welcome Jana and Natalie who joined us for the first time. They learned about the hike from our eNewsletter sent to Friends of Sokol. We are so glad you (and Minnie the fox terrier) could join us!
About half way up on the ridge, with views of San Francisco Bay on one side and San Pablo and Briones dams on the other side, we took a break for snacks and some fun excises with elastic band. We took turns making up the workout and it was great.
It was so nice to converse both in English and Czech. We shared our latest experiences of renewing a Czech passport; traveling to Czech and Slovakia this summer; and getting a Czech birth certificate for a child born here. There is so much to learn from each other.
For all those who could not join us on this one, do not be shy and join us next time - August 1 at Golden Gate Park. More info above.

5th and 6th graders
of Czech School of California
had a discussion on the 50s and 60s in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic
|
|
|
In June, an online discussion was held at Czech School in California with a member of Sokol San Francisco, Mrs. Lída O'Donnell from Portland. This special talk was dedicated to her memories of the 1950s and 60s living in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.
Students in Grades 5-6 had the opportunity to listen to the engaging story of a woman who spent her youth growing up in socialist Czechoslovakia. They not only learned about everyday life of the time that involved heating with coal, imposed daily rations and long queues to buy food, but also about the political background of this period. The children could not believe that any national celebrations in Czechoslovakia at the time were dominated by the ever-present red hammer & sickle flag, the symbol of the Soviet Union.
Lída also shared what relationships were like between people at the time. Apparently, trust amongst friends was rare in the 1950s. There were accusations, interrogations, and harassment. But still people believed that the West would help them from Stalin's domination. Planes from West Germany dropped leaflets at the border assuring the citizens of Czechoslovakia that help would soon be coming. As we know now, we had to wait much longer for our freedom.
The narrative filled with heated discussion and Lída received countless questions which she patiently answered. As a follow up, students were asked to write a short story visualizing themselves living in these difficult times. Their observations were more than interesting.
I would like to thank Lída for a great discussion and reiterate her closing message to us all here: "Respect what you have and don't let anything like this happen again in the future."
Thank you,
Jana Wichová

The House of
Czech and Slovak Republics
is finally reopening
from our friends at House of Czech and Slovak Republics in San Diego
|
|
(after over a year) on July 3rd and it should be open every Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm (with some restrictions of the City of San Diego).
HCSR has Prague and Bratislava murals painted by Stefan Talian. The third and the last mural of Morava was just finished. Those murals were born during quarantine and have never been seen by visitors/public yet.
Note from Stefan Talian (artist):
I finished and signed this mural of Moravia on Thursday evening and Friday morning I woke up to the news that a devastating tornado raged through the region, leaving at least 5 dead and more than 300 injured. Many people lost their homes and businesses..!!!
My heart goes to those who lost their lives or loved ones!
Short video of new mural Morava at HCSR:
Note from Martina (HCSR):
It is lovely Stefan, and it brought tears to my eyes and warmth to my heart, because this mural was created at the same time as Morava's deadly tornado tragedy. God Bless my fellow Moravian people.
The rest of you probably already know, the tornado has recently swept through several villages in the Czech Republic (South Moravia), killing five people and leaving many others injured.
The Czech Republic government said over 1,000 homes had been affected and local authorities were working to provide accommodation for people whose roofs had been destroyed:
Some of you have asked me if they can help the tornado-affected South Moravian people financially or as volunteers. Here is a link from CR with more information for those interested (you can click for English translation on the page):
Thank you so much and please stay safe!

Remembering Waldemar Matuska
from our friends at SVU-LA
|
|
Dear SVU-LA members and friends,
The wife of Waldemar Matuska, a fantastic Czech singer, was visiting LA and we had chance to sit down with her at George Planner’s house and “remember” Waldemar.
(It was beautiful sunny afternoon and unfortunately neighbors children were enjoying pool party…..)
It is hard to believe, but it is already 12 years since Waldemar left this world - but he never left us. His voice will be with us forever!
This short video is unfortunately only in czech language, but there are a lot of photos
and today is so easy to listen his music ,just by Googling his name……..
Enjoy

How well do you know Czech Regalia?

Most likely everyone can draw a flag and knows the capital of the Czech Republic.
Radiozurnal (Czech radio) posted a quiz "How well do you know Czech Regalia"... it was not as easy as I expected :-)

"Královská cesta v Praze 2020"
|
|
The Royal Way - Many visitors are well aware of this term that refers to probably the most beautiful sightseeing route in the city; for many, it represents the true symbol of old Prague. The name was given to a route, which for many centuries had been taken by the Czech kings in a procession to their coronation in the St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle, the spiritual centre of the kingdom.
You can enjoy a virtual walk through Kralovska cesta (Royal Way) in Tana Tuckova's newly released film.

Moser Crystal Glass -
Czech’s most luxurious brand
|
|
Czech glass is known throughout the world for its craftsmanship and artistic qualities. The history of the glassmaking industry dates all the way back to the Middle Ages, when the first glassworks were built in the deep Bohemian forests. Today, there are dozens of glassmaking factories and studios around the Czech Republic, but perhaps the best-known of them is Moser, based in the West-Bohemian spa town of Karlovy Vary.
