Sokol SF Newsletter - July 2022
President's Message
Dear Sokol SF Members and Friends,

Summer tends to be a quieter time for Sokol SF as families and friends scatter to take in better weather and breaks from work and school. We hope you, too, have a chance to enjoy the season while we continue to make plans for the fall and beyond. If the summer downtime has you yearning to get involved locally, we welcome you to join us in planning or executing one of our many future events!

For now, we hope you enjoy the sunshine!

Nazdar!

Speaker Series Event
Special Envoy for Expatriate Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic JUDr. Jiří Krátký, M.A.

On Sunday, June 19th, the Czech community was invited to an online conversation with JUDr. Jiří Krátký, M.A., Special Envoy for Expatriate Affairs of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This was Mr. Krátký's third gathering with the local SF Bay Area community. He shared with attendees his primary functions as Special Envoy and all that he does for the expatriate communities abroad. He also used the opportunity to discuss funding of expatriate associations and schools, before shifting to an interactive session with attendees.

Attendees asked questions about correspondence voting, eligibility for Czech citizenship and passports applications, inheritance laws, and paying taxes while living abroad, to which Mr. Kratky responded while providing useful resources to all who attended.

If you did not have the opportunity to attend, the audio of the event is available on our YouTube Channel SokolSF Media at: https://youtu.be/R555c9aX0sU

Get Involved
Be a part of the Day of Czech Culture!
There are three opportunities to do so:
1. Czech Salon Dance BESEDA
Looking for dancers!
This very special dance that links folk dance forms with the elegant dance style will
come to life again at our “Day of Czech Culture on October 8th in Orinda.

Česká beseda was introduced at a particularly important time in Czech cultural history,
a period characterized by a great upsurge of activity in art, politics and cultural events of
all kinds. The initiators were poet Jan Neruda, musicians Ferdinand Heller and Bedřich Smetana, dancing master Karel Link and other Czech artists of the new national cultural life.

Česká beseda is performed by four couples in a square formation and consists of
four parts, each has several sections (various steps variations).

You will be sent instructional video to learn the basic steps over the summer. In September there will be 4 in person training sessions to bring it all together!

All potential dancers are WELCOME!
All interested dancers send an email to sokolsf@gmail.com
2. Design a T-shirt for the occasion
As you may have read, we're planning a festival-style Day of Czech Culture this fall and we're looking for a gifted graphic designer to create a logo for this very special event! We're hoping to use it on all of our marketing - from flyers to t-shirts.

Here's what we're envisioning our graphic image should include:
  • Sokol SF logo
  • American flag
  • Czech flag
  • Slovak flag
  • Something that evokes images of a Czech festival - dancing, delicious food, beautiful imagery of the old country!

The winner will be recognized on the Day of Czech Culture and will receive a free lunch voucher!

We invite you to let your creativity flow!
Contact us with any questions and entries at sokolsfevents@gmail.com

Thank you to those who submitted their entries! We will let you know soon!
3. Participate as a vendor
We are still looking for Vendors to participate !
If you own a business or know about a business whose products would enrich
our Day of the Czech Culture, please let us know at sokolsfevents@gmail.com

ERWIN L. CHLOUPEK (1869-1948)
– KLÍČOVÁ POSTAVA ČESKOSLOVENSKÉHO
SAN FRANCISKA
PART I.

By Amb.

News from XXII. American Sokol Organization Convention in Ennis, TX June 9-12, 2022

We elected new Executive board at the convention and ASO's new Educational
director Anna Cook has an exciting announcement:

Our Czech-American community needs to be aware of events going on across the USA as we continue to be RELEVANT to our next generation of Czech-loving members.

This is a unique opportunity that does not have anything to do with gymnastics, but certainly is a "sport" that is Czech related, takes a lot of training, and gives our members a chance at winning several thousand dollars in ONE WEEKEND of a competition.

This competition is free for the public which could make this event a great destination for any age and takes place EVERY YEAR in October at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay.

It is a Voice Competition and involves singing Czech or Slovak Opera!
Czech Pedigree

The Český Fousek or Bohemian Wire-Haired Pointing Griffon was originally bred in the Czech Republic as a hunting dog. It is wirehaired and has the appearance of having a beard and mustache. A versatile pointer, Český Fousek has the qualities needed to hunt in the field, in the water and in the forest. These dogs are easy to train and very devoted to their owners.
Golden Age of Grand Hotel Pupp
began 150 years ago

The five-star Grand Hotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary is one of the most famous hotels in Europe. In recent years, it has also become a popular backdrop for Hollywood films.
On 20 June 1872, the brothers Anton, Julius, and Heinrich Pupp became the official business partners of Karlovy Vary’s Grandhotel Pupp. Thus, after forty years, the property was finally returned to the Pupp family’s hands, after decades of bad business decisions and family disputes had caused it to fall out of them.
