Guitars, bass, keyboards, flutes, drums, triangles, .. all instruments are welcome. There is one piano waiting for a player too!

We will be singing indoors or outdoors (weather permitting). The exact location of this gathering will be shared with those registered for the event. Doors will open at 2pm and singing will start at 3pm.

Informal "Ironman" Triathlon and Group Picnic
Sunday August 27, 2023 in Tiburon, CA

Come join us at an active picnic in Tiburon!

Many of us like biking and running.
Many of us heard about triathlon and wanted to try it out! Some of us have raced triathlons.

We are organizing a friendly, family oriented triathlon in one of the prettiest parks in Tiburon.

All participants will compete as a group.
We start with a swim in the warm currents of the Bay. The group stays together the whole time and we wait for everyone to get out of the water.

Then we transition back to our cars to change for the bike ride. We start and bike as a group and adjust our speed to stay together. The bike ride goes through Sausalito, around the area and back to the park.

Once everyone is back from the bike and ready to run we start the last segment and run along the water for about 3 miles.

After crossing the finish line we will have a picnic with fruit and a heated grill.

Do you want to come for a picnic and cheer on the triathlon participants?
Do you want to try one of the triathlon disciplines (swim/bike/run)?
Do you want to complete the whole course at your own pace?
Or do you want to compete with others?
Come and join us for the event.

Everyone participating is a winner!

The race course could be modified to accommodate individual needs. If you don't feel like swimming, never mind, come enjoy biking and running. If you want to come just for the picnic, you are welcome too :)

The event is followed by picnic potluck to share the energy and enjoy the community.
We have the Paradise Beach Park in Tiburon reserved for the day and are looking forward to meet fellow Sokols, new members and athletes and their friends and families.

Registration will open in July.
Mark your calendars and let us know
- we are planning a field trip to
84th Annual Moravian Days Festival
in Lemont, IL
September 23rd and 24th, 2023

We are planning a field trip to visit a two day event in Lemont, IL in September. Everyone is invited to join us on this trip. We have budgeted a stipend to help cover some of the traveling expenses for Sokol SF members, amount depending on number of people who sign up and attend.
I attended a few years back and was impressed by the two day festival, all the music, dances, food, wonderful people, kroje (traditional costumes), beer... you name it... made me feel like I was back at home!

"Moravian Day festival focuses on the spirit, beauty, and talents of the Czech, Slovak, and Moravian regions. Come to Moravian Days to feel the heart and soul of people celebrating a festival in true ethnic style. Our goal is to preserve traditions and show our future generations the music, dancing, and culture of their ancestors. During this weekend festival, you can listen or sing along to beautiful songs of the heartland. Enjoy the energetic rhythms of polkas and such from our dancers of all ages. Have traditional food & bakery and imported Czech beer. You can also purchase arts & crafts from the Czech and Slovak Republics.

Just a tease of what you can expect on Saturday evening - traditional foods for dinner, dancing, "Koláče" eating contest , visiting performers, Czech beer and wine.
On Sunday the day starts at 10 am with a mass in the Czech language followed by traditional dance performances, songs and dancing....
This year there will be a band "Legruti" visiting from Velke Bilovice

If you are interested in coming you are welcome to join us but please arrange your own transportation and hotels.

Czech News & Announcements
FRANTISEK DLASK (1924- 2016) and JARMILA DLASK(1924- 2023)

FRANTISEK was the president of Sokol San Francisco for many years.
Through his heart-felt engagement he strived to keep alive his own - and his compatriot’s - connection to his beloved Bohemia.
Born in Prague in 1924, he studied engineering until the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia, who transformed university students into forced laborers. During the war, Frantisek actively participated in the Nazi resistance movement. Deeply dedicated to democracy, he was persecuted and threatened when the Communist party seized control of the country in 1948. To save his life, he emigrated, first to Australia, and from there to California, where he worked, married, and lived until the end of his life.
He loved his work on airplanes and constructed beautiful airplane models for the joy of his two granddaughters. He was also one of the pillars of the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos.
Frantisek was a very kind and generous man. Modest and loving, he was a dear father and much loved grandfather.

JARMILA, his wife, was Sokol's treasurer for many years. Born in Prague in 1924, she also had to work as forced labor after the Nazis closed her university. After the war, she finished her studies in literature and journalism and worked in Prague in the field of art, theatre and music.
In 1968 she emigrated to California, where she worked and lived all the rest of her life.
Jarmila had a great sensibility for art and beauty. She loved to sing and dance, and beautifully recited Czech poems. In her youth she was very athletic, loved mountaineering, skiing, and gymnastics, as well as airplanes and travel.
She will be remembered as a cheerful and artistic woman, singing, dancing, laughing, and raising her wine glass with a joyful "cheers!".

Stanford Live and the San Francisco Symphony Present
Dvořák’s New World Symphony
Featuring Joshua Weilerstein, conductor | Alexi Kenney, violin

In his New World Symphony, Antonín Dvořák frames his impressions of the music he heard in America through the lens of his Bohemian roots. Joshua Weilerstein conducts the San Francisco Symphony in a program that also includes Alexi Kenney in Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, an impassioned showpiece written by a composer whose first love was the violin.

This is a public announcement and not Sokol SF sponsored event.

We would like to share news from our San Francisco Symphony lecturer and composer, Lukáš Janata.

I am very pleased about the upcoming presentation of my violin concerto by the chamber orchestra Pražská konzervatoř. And even bigger, that the main magician of the project is the phenomenal Daniel Matejčar, for whom this concert is directly written. The whole thing was created at the impulse of a synchronicity common history: we both come from Liberec and we are connected with ZŠ a ZUŠ Jabloňová and Pražská konzervatoř
Few years ago, our former mentor, Jan Prchal, came up with the idea to connect our art through this project. And I'm very happy for him and the fact that the project is coming to life right now.The world premiere was on May 17 in the beautiful space of Národní muzeum under mthe auspices of České Muzeum Hudby / Czech Museum Of Music

May 1945: Czechoslovakia at a crossroads

Czechia was the place where the last shots of World War II were fired in Europe. The generally accepted narrative is that, with most of the country liberated by the Soviet Red Army, the former Czechoslovakia was inevitably headed for the communist Soviet bloc. Vít Smetana from the Prague Institute of Contemporary History dispels some deeply-rooted myths perpetuated by the communists about what happened in the very last days of WWII in Czechoslovakia.
Thank you, Simko, for another WWII rememberance
Eighty-one years ago, Deputy Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich's assassination occurred in Czechoslovakia.
This historic event would not have been accomplished successfully without the presence of courageous individuals.
The brave members of the Sokol, from the Jindra group, provided shelter to the paratroopers, even though their lives were at risk.
In the photograph, we see the Novák family, who provided a safe place for Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík.
Unfortunately, after being betrayed, they all faced execution. Let us always remember their sacrifice.
Thank you, Jaro, for bringing us this article:
