Sokol SF Newsletter - March 2022
|
|
Dear Sokol Members and Friends,
Last month, I had the pleasure of "meeting" with Amb. Jaroslav Olša, Jr., the Czech Consul General in Los Angeles, via Zoom to discuss all things Sokol SF!
Many of you know that Consul General Olša, Jr. is a renaissance man whose interests are varied and unique, so it may come as no surprise that during his short time on the West Coast, he has taken an avid interest in notable Czechs who have lived in California. When he shared his list of notable Czechs with me, it read like a "who's who." And, I am delighted to announce that during our meeting Consul General Olša, Jr. offered to write a monthly column for our newsletter entitled, "About the People and the Tales of 'Czech' California," which will feature these Czechs and which begins in this issue with Clara Vostrovsky Winlow (see below).
A goal of Amb. Olša Jr.'s in writing the column is that he hopes to learn about other notable Czechs from readers like you. So, we ask that if you have names or stories of Czechs who have passed through the Golden State, please share them with us.
Finally, with the arrival of warmer weather and Covid restrictions relaxing, we are pleased to announce that we have two events in the works for March that we invite you to. A fascinating update about Covid-19 prevention and treatments during an educational Zoom session, as well as some fun in the Shark Tank at yet another San Jose Sharks Czech Heritage Night!
Due to the unstable political situation in Europe, the Ambroš Duo, Miroslav Ambroš, and Zuzana Ambrošová postponed their concert tour to the United States. They hope to reschedule for later this year.
We hope to see you and your families online or in person very soon!
Nazdar,
Linda Janourova
President

Hike in Golden Gate Park
Sunday, March 6, 2022 @ 11 am
We will explore the east side of Golden Gate Park.
Let’s meet in the parking lot by Stow Lake Boathouse.
From there we will go visit the Rose Garden and the bust of Tomas G Masaryk.
Masaryk's birthday is March 7 so we will lay some flowers at his bust at the Rose Garden.
We will visit the Observatory Deck of the de Young Museum to get a view of the City;
it is free of charge and the views are beautiful!
We will continue by the Japanese Tea Gardens back to Stow Lake, cross the Stow Lake Bridge over to visit the waterfalls, and we will end up back by the boathouse.
It is an easy hike; all flat. Hopefully, the flowers will start blooming and
we can welcome spring at this beautiful park.

Redwood Shores Bay Trail II Hike
The northern part of the trail
Sunday, February 13, 2022 @ 11am
|
|
8 adults, 8 kids, and 3 dogs enjoyed an easy hike at Redwood Shores (about 1.5 miles in each direction) close to SF Bay.
Several watchtowers on the way gave us the opportunity to watch the wildlife in the marchlands (we saw Great egret, Red-tailed hawk, Hummingbirds, and more from a close distance).
|
|
At the turning point of the hike, we had a picnic with sports activities. We played disk golf and soccer with frisbees (both with authentic SOKOL disks), organized a fun run, and did some stretching (adults, kids, and dogs involved).
Come and join us next time!

About the People and the Tales of "Czech" California
By Amb. Jaroslav Olša, Jr. Czech Consul General
Whereas much has been and continues to be written about Czechs in Chicago, Nebraska, Iowa and New York, for those Czechs who made it to the opposite coast of America, reaching the Golden State of California, many have been forgotten. That is primarily because in cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego, Czech communities - akin to cities within cities - were never established - the types of communities where one would find rows of Czech restaurateurs and butcher shops or books and magazines produced by Czech publishers and journalists.
And precisely because Czech periodicals on the West Coast don't exist, we have to make a concerted effort to rediscover notable Czechs who once lived in California. It is these notable persons that this monthly column will feature. The author welcomes any additional information or documents related to those persons written about, as well as other notable Czechs who once lived on the West Coast.
Amb. Jaroslav Olša, Jr., Consul General of the Czech Consulate in Los Angeles.

Sokol celebrates 160 years
|
|

Czech and Slovak national anthems

Not everybody knows all of the 4 original anthem verses. Thank you Martino Nemeckova for putting all this information together and sharing it!
Czech Republic anthem with all original verses. Officially, we sing only the first verse.
Hymna České Republiky se všemi původními verši. Oficiálně zpíváme pouze první sloku.
|
|
Slovakia's anthem with all original verses. Since 1993 (split of Czechoslovakia), a 2nd verse was added, so officially we sing the first 2 verses.
Slovenská hymna se všemi původními verši. V roce 1993 (rozdělení Československa) byl přidán i druhý verš, takže oficiálně zpíváme první 2 sloky.

Hokejista Jaromír Jágr Padesátiny
Hockey Player Jaromír Jágr Turns Fifty

|
"I used to be a wild man and a predator, now I'm just an herbivore," Jágr used a laws of the jungle analogy. Today, the iconic golden triumph from the Nagano Olympics ranks above the two world titles. He doesn't feel like he is fifty years old.

|
|
|
"Dřív jsem byl dravec a predátor, teď už jsem jen býložravec," použil přirovnání k zákonům džungle. Nad dva tituly mistra světa řadí dnes už kultovní zlatý triumf z olympiády v Naganu. Na padesátku se necítí.
