Golden Gate Park with a visit to T.G. Masaryk's bust
March 9, 2024 @ 11 am

Every year, our unit remembers T.G. Masaryk awith a hike and a visit to his bust in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. JOIN US!

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was a Czechoslovak statesman, political activist, and philosopher who served as the first president of Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1935. He is regarded as the founding father of Czechoslovakia.

Let’s meet in the parking lot by Stow Lake Boathouse.
From there we will go visit the Rose Garden and the bust of Tomas G Masaryk.

Masaryk's birthday is March 7 so we will lay some flowers at his bust at the Rose Garden.
Sokol San Francisco donated the bust to Golden Gate Park many years ago, come and hear the story.
We will visit the Observatory Deck of the de Young Museum to get a view of the City;
it is free of charge and the views are beautiful!

We will continue by the Japanese Tea Gardens back to Stow Lake, cross the Stow Lake Bridge over to visit the waterfalls, and we will end up back by the boathouse.

It is an easy hike; all flat. Hopefully, the flowers will start blooming and
we can welcome spring at this beautiful park.

Prof. Bohumír Janský and Eva Janská, Ph.D.
Saturday, April 13, 2024
3 PM - 5 PM
Red Morton Community Center, Rm B
1120 Roosevelt Ave. Redwood City, CA
We are delighted to invite our community to meet Bohumír Janský and Eva Janská, who will visit San Francisco on their way to a conference (AAG) in Hawaii.

Do not miss this unique opportunity to meet the highly respected geographer, hydrologist, and explorer Prof. Dr. Bohumir Janský, who discovered the true source of the Amazon River and doc. RNDr. Eva Janská. Ph.D. who is a specialist researcher on Czech Diaspora and migration.
Prof. Janský of Charles University led several international expeditions in Siberia, Central Asia, and Latin America and, with his team, discovered the true source of the Amazon river.
Prof. Janský's lifelong work and passion focuses on Geography, Hydrology, Water Management, and Water Protection, primarily issues with drought and floods in the Czech Republic.

Specialist researcher on Czech diaspora and migration, Doc. Janská focuses on international migration and the adaptation of immigrants into the majority society. Our community participated in Doc. Janská's research project into expatriate issues directly influencing its outcomes and resulting recommendations on diaspora policymaking.

We will hear about some great adventures, learn exciting facts about our 'blue planet', and be awed by people's determination to find their place to call home in the world.

Presentation and conversation will be in both Czech and English

Hike at Stanford University

We had a wonderful semi-urban hike around the Stanford campus! Our group of Sokols explored a cactus garden, saw statues from Papua as well as ones by Rodin, caught the edge of Lake Lagunita, and ended up by the Stanford Family Mausoleum, which was guarded by a live sokol in our honor.

Petr Janda Concert
February 25, 2024
Alhambra Irish House
831 Main Street, Redwood City

On Sunday evening, I went to Petr Janda's concert at the Irish Bar with my friends. The concert was sensational.
Petr played all the great songs, and we sang along with him. After the show, Mr. Janda took pictures with us; he was hilarious and friendly.
Thank you very much for organizing.
- Nela
Concert was attended aprox. 50 people, some were Sokol members who sat in the first row. At the end of the concert the concert organizer, George Vlcek, thanked Sokol SF for our donation. I distributed 40 Sokol SF cards and 25 cards were taken by people. Mr. and Mrs. Pivnicka, Honorary consuls for Czech Republic and Slovakia also attended the concert.
- Lea

FRANCIS KORBEL (1831-1920)
NEJBOHATŠÍ ČECH RANÉ KALIFORNIE
(1. část – Uprchlík, vydavatel a dřevař)
by Amb.

June 16 - 23, 2024
near Arnold by Bear Valley, CA

V termínu od 16. do 23. června 2024 se bude konat třetí ročník českého
kempování (nejen) rodičů s dětmi. V tomto týdnu se pokusíme vytvořit v Kalifornii české prostředí plné českých her, pohádek a písniček.
Budeme kempovat u městečka Arnold, nedaleko od Bear Valley.

Kempování přinese aktivity převážně pro děti, ale určitě neodmítneme dospělé bez dětí, zvláště pokud by chtěli s organizací kempování nějak pomoci.

Consulate in LA is Looking for Old Publications

As you likely read in our last newsletter, the Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles is trying to compile the most comprehensive collection of publications and memorabilia of the history of Czechs (and Slovaks) on the West Coast of the United States. Last year, he took over a large portion of Sokol SF's and other private collector's memorabilia, and a portion of those can be found today at the National Museum, Naprstkovo Museum, and the Library of Literature from individuals living in exile, Libri Prohibiti.

This leads us to turn to you, our readers, with an ask -- could you please let us know if you have any old issues of Sokol SF's Vestnik, Sokol Fresno's Vestnik, Sokol Los Angeles's Notes, or issues of the Czech Catholic Mission?

Moreover, there is also interest in one-off publications, flyers, and photos. If you are willing to donate these items (or allow us to borrow the items to be photocopied), please contact the Consul General directly at CzechConsulateLA@gmail.com or Sokol SF.

Thank you!
