Sokol SF Newsletter - November 2021
|
|
Dear Sokols and Friends,
The month of October was a busy and exciting time for our unit.
We enjoyed a wonderful lunch at DJ's Bistro in Concord, where we met many old friends, and made some new ones.
To celebrate 103rd anniversary of the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, Sokol San Francisco organized "Sokolský Běh Republiky" on October 17th, 2021 at Seal Point Park. This event was organized in collaboration with Ceska Obec Sokolska and Czech School of California. We welcomed about 100 runners, their families, and many friends of all ages - the youngest participant was 7 months old and the oldest 80 years!
Our unit is one of four Sokol units in the United States that was awarded a grant by the American Sokol Organization Foundation to support unit growth. Sokol SF unit is really growing; thanks to this grant and to several new and popular activities our unit organized in the last few years - even during the pandemic. Just during the month of October, our membership increased by 12 people.
After nearly a two-year pause, we are looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming Grand Gala in Foster City, on November 13th, 2021.
In December you can join us at our virtual demonstration of Czech Christmas cookies or attend an in-person Christmas Carol SingingParty in San Carlos.
See you at our events, stay strong and healthy!
Nazdar!
Jara Dusatko
President

SF Bay Area Sokolský Běh Republiky 2021
and Sokol SF Picnic
Sunday, October 17, 2021
|
|
|
Over 100 of us got together to celebrate the birthday of the Czech republic. We had a wonderful day by the Bay with a picnic and a run.
The facilities were great. Large playground, two BBQ grills, plenty of picnic tables, food to share with everyone, coffee, and cookies... What a day!
Some of the younger kids after finishing their race joined in and ran again with the older kids. And quite a few of the older kids ran the 4K race with the adults!
Congratulations to Ondra Lehecka, our overall winner!
It was so nice to finally get together in person and meet new friends and their families.
Aja Bufka, a Czech reporter for iDnes and iRozhlas from Los Angeles, came to celebrate with us and wrote an article for Radio Prague International
(click on the blue link above)
We were one of three units in North America to organize the run! Washington DC and Ottawa were the other two.
Hope to see you all again soon!

Farewell DJ's Bistro Lunch
in Concord on Sunday, October 10, 2021
|
|
Sokol SF had a tasty activity visiting DJ Bistro in Concord as our beloved European Restaurant will soon be changing hands.
On October 10th, twenty-one hungry patrons joined the festivities and much to our delight 12 Sokol SF members came into the event however, 21 patrons walked out as Sokol SF members. Yes, we are elated to announce that 9 other guests joined Sokol SF right then and there.
We drank from an array of flavorsome beers and enjoyed Czech delights like Veprovy, zeli a bramborovy salat (breaded Pork Cutlet, purple Sauerkraut & potato salad). While enjoying our lunch, we learned about everyone’s journey from Czech or Slovakia to the USA and eventually how they heard about Sokol SF. Our members have such fascinating paths.
Jaroslav Sedivy has been a long-time Sokol SF supporter and will be missed as he looks forward to his retirement soon.
And WELCOME to our new Sokol SF members, we look forward to seeing more of you at our upcoming events.

Daniel Bohuslav Botˇcha
January 24, 1938 - October 21, 2021
Bohuslav was born in Zbraslav (today part of Prague). He graduated from a vocational school in the field of Mechanical Refrigeration. In 1968, Bohouš worked on the installation of a cooling system at Prague's new airport in Ruzyně. At that time, after the occupation of Allied troops, Bohuslav decided to emigrate. His dream was to live in freedom. In Munich, while he and his family waited for a US visa, he worked at Opel.
After arriving in the USA in 1969, Bohouš got his first job at a Volkswagen dealership in San Francisco. In 1977, his long-term dream came true when Bohouš bought his own “Daniel´s” Auto Service in Sonoma.
In addition to Bohuslav´s love of cars, he loved music. In Czechoslovakia he played in a professional band on saxophone and clarinet; in his later years he learned to play on accordion and ukulele. Bohouš had many friends and actively participated in a great number of Bay Area Czech events - attended Catholic Masses under Bishop P. Esterka in San Francisco and all Sokol SF picnics and other occasions. Bohouš also loved to travel, ski, and hike.
Many of Bohoušek's friends will greatly miss his smile and sweet nature, and will remember him as a positive, kind, good man who loved life, his family, and friends.
Bohoušek was a loving husband and a wonderful dad to his daughter Jana, and a loving grandpa to his grandchildren Monika and Dani.
Sokol San Francisco is grateful for his long-time membership, friendship and amazing cooperation. He will be greatly missed.

Spiritual Kvintet
says goodbye to fans after six decades
|
|
Spiritual kvintet has a local connection to the Bay Area too. One of their female singers Jarka Kavkova (Hadrabova) emigrated to the United States and lived and sang in the Bay Area. You could hear her voice at caroling events, at dinner dances etc.

Jiri Suchy oslavil sve 90. narozeniny
|
|

Our friend William Lobkowicz - whom you may remember as the guest of honor from the Orinda Czech Festival a few years back - seen here singing "Goin' Home" set to Dvořák's second Largo movement of his New World Symphony while accompanied by none other than Yo-Yo Ma. We hope you enjoy!

Expo 2020
See how the Czech Republic Pavilion will transform arid land into an oasis
|
|
As countries gather at Expo 2020 Dubai this October to brainstorm the ways we can conserve and consume natural resources responsibly, Czech Republic offers its own transformative technology that turns the desert into a lush haven.
Designed by the Czech architecture studio Formosa AA, the two-storey pavilion is shaded by 12-metre-tall organic capillaries that are in line with the theme of Sustainability, the district out of which the country pavilion is based.
