November Hike
Lafayette Community Park Nature Walk
Saturday, November 4, 2023 @ 10 am

A surprisingly wild little open space in the middle of Burton Valley! The confluence of two creeks with a diverse array of native plants and excellent birding! It is an easy hike little under 2 miles long. A wonderful place to take family walks with kids and dogs.

Directions:
Take St. Mary’s Road to the Lafayette Community Center at 480 St. Mary’s Road. Park in the back, near the tennis courts. You will have the community center on your left and tennis courts on your right.

The bridge where we will meet will be right in front of you. We will meet at 10 am at the bridge. You can look at the first picture after the map in the "More information about the hike" tab.

Our next challenge is here!
Dear Sokol Members and Friends,

We are seeking your help in uniting
Art with Poetry, by asking for your illustrations of images evoked by poems previously submitted to our Poetry Competition. In the links below you will find the poems, which are waiting for illustrations.

With that we hope to elevate one beautiful form of art with another.
Let yourselves be inspired by the poems and create an original piece of art adhering to the following criteria: in either color or black-and-white, or just a sketch, we will leave it up to you and your imagination.
We only ask that you submit your illustration in the maximum size of A5 and send it to us in JPG or PDF format.

Please submit your illustration via email to sokolsfevents@gmail.com no later than 1/30/2024

We are looking forward to seeing your skills. Thank you!
Milí členové a přátelé Sokola,

Consulate in LA is Looking for Old Publications

As you likely read in our last newsletter, the Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles is trying to compile the most comprehensive collection of publications and memorabilia of the history of Czechs (and Slovaks) on the West Coast of the United States. Last year, he took over a large portion of Sokol SF's and other private collector's memorabilia, and a portion of those can be found today at the National Museum, Naprstkovo Museum, and the Library of Literature from individuals living in exile, Libri Prohibiti.

This leads us to turn to you, our readers, with an ask -- could you please let us know if you have any old issues of Sokol SF's Vestnik, Sokol Fresno's Vestnik, Sokol Los Angeles's Notes or issues of the Czech Catholic Mission? Moreover, there is also interest in one-off publications, flyers, and photos. If you are willing to donate these items (or allow us to borrow the items to be photocopied), please contact the Consul General directly at CzechConsulateLA@gmail.com or Sokol SF.

Thank you!

SLOVAK WOODEN CHURCHES
Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 11am EST
Our friends at Global Slovakia invite you to a free webinar!

The folk ingenuity at its best is expressed in the picturesque wooden churches of Slovakia. The perfect harmony of the soul with nature still speaks to us today. Whether Protests, Catholic, Greek Catholic, or Orthodox, Slovak wooden churches are breathtakingly beautiful. They have an exceptional worldwide value, which is why they are part of the UNESCO global human heritage.

Some of them were built 5 centuries ago! Others were constructed without a single nail!
Once, there were over 300 wooden churches in Slovakia. Sixty remain for us to admire today.
