Dear Sokol SF Members and Friends,
October's message is simple: please join us at our two biggest events of the year taking place this month!
The first event is the Day of Czech Culture on October 8th in Orinda and the second is the Sokolsky Beh Republiky and Picnic on October 30th in San Mateo .
We've worked hard all year to make these events a big success, now we just need your participation! Above all, we promise that you'll see old friends and make new ones and that you'll have Czech-inspired fun! More details about both events can be found below.
See you there!

Message from The Consul General:
|
|
Our Day of Czech Culture will be attended by Jaroslav Olša, Jr., the Consul General in Los Angeles, who together with historian Martin Nekola, are planning on writing a book about the history of the Czech community in California.
You'll find their book dedicated to Czechs in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana at our event.
Because most publications, which were historically published by Czech organizations, including Sokol, are not available in any Czech libraries and because it would be beneficial to preserve such publications, the Consul General is making the following ask:
|
|
If you have any publications (including older Sokol newsletters, newsletters published by Bishop Esterka and his predecessors, etc.) information, documents or photographs pertaining to Czech history that you are willing to part with, please bring them to Orinda and the Consul General will get them to the relevant Czech libraries and archives.

Lenka Glassner, Bay-Area Artist and Author
Designer of Day of Czech Culture Festival Logo
|
|
Lenka will be displaying some of her art work at the Day of Czech Culture Festival.
|
|
Sokol SF would like to give a shout-out to Lenka Glassner, a Bay Area artist and author, who also designed our Day Of Czech Culture Festival logo.
Lenka decorates beautiful eggs based on European traditional designs and showcases and sells her art at various farmer's markets. https://www.folkeggsquisite.com/
Lenka has a great eye for color, form, and texture. She is creative, original, and fun; her art pieces are unique with a whimsical touch.
Lenka also authored "Czeching In" - which describes her family history and entertaining situations encountered while traveling in the Czech Republic with her American husband.

Hike at Shoreline Lake in Mountain View
Sunday, September 25, 2022 @ 10 am
|
|
|
We had the opportunity to visit Rengstoff House and enjoy the 18th-century indoor decorations, furniture, art, and architecture.
We enjoyed a short hike with meditation in a nice green park next to the Bay (fresh air, and a nice warm day, not hot). It was a nice experience.
We saw many different birds and native animals as well as plants and trees that already started changing colors to yellow, orange, and red.
We had lunch in Ludwig's Biergarten - a European restaurant on Castro in Mountain View with traditional European food and a nice cold beer.
Everyone had a good time and enjoyed socializing.

Postavy a příběhy České Kalifornie
BOHUŠ BENEŠ (1901-1977) — ČS. DIPLOMAT Z ORINDY
(1. část – Konzulem v San Francisku)
By Amb. Jaroslav Olša, Jr. Czech Consul General
V roce 1940 v Kalifornii sídlilo už přes pět tisíc obyvatel narozených na území tehdejšího Československa a k tomu dvojnásobný počet Američanů českého a slovenského původu. Z nich celá třetina (1,536, resp. 2,740) žila v Los Angeles a výrazně méně (783, resp. 760) v San Francisku.
