Dear Sokol SF Members and Friends,
It goes without saying that Sokol's members are, and always have been, its cornerstone.
Much in the same way that we honor our youngest members by providing scholarship opportunities to the Czech School of California, our Board recently voted that it was time to honor our unit's veteran members by providing complimentary membership to our unit to individuals ages 85+. These members are not just a crucial link to the past but serve as our current-day mentors and inspire us to continue to remember Sokol's credo and what continues to bring us together today, as it did when Sokol was first established.
If you are interested in joining Sokol SF and are 85 years or older, we invite you to apply to our unit but rest assured, your dues will be paid for by Sokol San Francisco.
Nazdar!
Linda Janourova
President of Sokol San Francisco

84th Annual Moravian Days Festival
in Lemont, IL
September 23rd and 24th, 2023
The Sokol SF contingent of Milena H. and her mom Vera, Jana B., Jara D., Lenka B., Nicole B., Iva H., Lea B., & Yvetta G. travelled to Chicago, IL to attend the UMS United Moravian Societies’ 84th Annual Moravian Days at the Lithuania World Center in Lemont, a suburb of Chicago.
“The Moravian Day festival focuses on the spirit, beauty and talents of the Czech, Slovak and Moravian regions and is an opportunity to feel the heart and soul of people celebrating a festival in true ethnic style.”
The event commenced on Saturday night with a welcome dinner with music performed by Legruti, a polka type band flown in from the Czech Republic.
The main event, and highlight of the weekend, continued on Sunday afternoon with a welcome address, parade of participants dressed in kroje, crowning of the 2023 – 2024 Miss Czech Slovak Illinois Queen, 5 groups of folk dancers ranging from 5-80 years of age, and a group of singers performing traditional songs to music performed by Legruti. We were mesmerized by the each of the dance presentations and thoroughly enjoyed witnessing this presentation of Czech and Slovak culture.
Additional to enjoying all the kroje, traditional Czech and Slovak costumes known for their intricate designs, puffed sleeves, elaborate collars, scarves, and ribbons, the group enjoyed traditional Czech food, sweets, wine, and beer.
A very grateful thank you to the UMS Program Committee who hosted this very special event. In addition to the event, we enjoyed exploring downtown Chicago and the local food scene.

Sokol San Francisco Archive
Has A New Home
Part One
The first few samples of a large Sokol San Francisco archive (and a first bits from
archive of Sokol Los Angeles), which have been donated from both organizations as
well as various private archives of its members, has been officially handed over to the
National Museum. It has been brought to Prague by Amb. Jaroslav Olša, Jr., Consul
General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles and handed over to Jan Lomíček, Head
Curator of the Dept. of the History of Physical Education and Sports. A small ceremony
was graced by the presence of Michal Lukeš, Director General of the National Museum
and Zuzana Strnadová, Director of Historical Museum.
Additionaly, more than 100 historical periodicals and books published in Czech by Czech compatriots in the United States throughout the 20th century were donated to the
Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures. It was received by Michaela
Tydlitátová, head of the library, and Ondřej Crhák, archivist. Náprstek Museum's library
was established by philantropist, patriot and politician Vojta Náprstek (1826-1894), who
was also active as a journalist in the United States, and it holds the largest collection of
Czech-American periodicals from the 1800s and early 1900s.
Similar collection was also handed over to Libri Prohibiti, an important Czech library
collecting Czech underground and illegal publications, as well as magazines and books
produced by Czech exiles and compatriots around the world. It was presented to Jiří
Gruntorád, Director of Libri Prohibiti library. Many of these publications, such as those
produced by Sokol San Francisco, have been missing in the library's collections. The collections on history of Czechs and Slovaks in the US West in the Czech museums and libraries are still far from being complete, and every such donation helps.

Honba za pokladem / Treasure hunt
October 7, 2023 at 1 pm
Přineste si piknik a dobrou náladu, škola zajistí lehké občerstvení. Přátelé a kamarádi jsou jako vždy vítáni. Těšíme se na Vás!
Přeji Vám pěkný den, za celý tým školy,
Vlaďka
