Sokol SF Newsletter - September 2021
President's Message
Dear Sokols and Friends,

Welcome to our last summer electronic Newsletter.

We are excited about the upcoming interesting events our board has organized. We are also happy that most of them will be in person, with the exception of the popular virtual cooking demo.

One of the ways to help you keep your immune system strong and healthy is to join Sokol SF on our upcoming hike in Redwood Shores in September and to participate in the "Sokolský Běh Republiky" in October.

I sincerely recommend that you join us in the "Sokolský Běh Republiky" - to measure your strength, demonstrate your physical fitness and also show your patriotism as we celebrate the 103rd Anniversary of the founding of the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia). Sokol San Francisco is the third unit from the United States to participate in the event this year - in addition to Sokol Washington D.C. and the City of Portland.

And let’s remember the Sokol slogan: "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.”

Looking forward to seeing you at some of the Sokol San Francisco events!

Nazdar!
Jara Dusatko
President

For more general information about the run and its history, click on the "Sokolsky Beh Republiky" image on the right or go to: https://www.behrepubliky.cz/

Sokol San Francisco will take part in this celebration for the first time this fall.

The Sokol SF branch of the Beh Republiky will take place:
  • Sunday, October 17, 2021
  • Seal Point Park, San Mateo, CA.

There are three categories are children under 10, children under 14 and adults

The registration fee for an adult is $10 (or 200 CZK if you are paying in CZK).
Acceptable forms of payment are PayPal or bank transfer from a Czech bank
There is no registration fee for children.

Should you have any difficulties with registration or payment, please contact me at sokolsfevents@gmail.com.

To celebrate the first year of the run in the San Francisco Bay Area you will receive a complimentary Sokolsky Beh Republiky Under Armour T-shirt from Sokol SF. You can check them out at the event web page at Sokolsky Beh Republiky

Due to the logistics of mailing the t-shirts and bibs from the Czech Republic to the USA,
YOU NEED TO REGISTER BY SEPTEMBER 25 to receive your complimentary t-shirt from Sokol SF.

Do NOT add T-shirts to the online basket, Sokol SF will get them for you.

After you register do not forget to send your name and t-shirt size to sokolsfevents@gmail.com

After the run, we will have a picnic sponsored by Sokol San Francisco and the Czech School of California.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the starting line! Mark your calendars and start training!

You do not need to run to come to the picnic; you can help us cheer on the runners.

Czech News & Information
Remembering the Extraordinary Life of
Jan Filípek
On September 23, 2004, it will be 17 years since the passing of Jan Filípek, a patriot, close friend of Sokol, and an extraordinary individual with a life story worthy of a book!

We hope you take the time to read about him below, as remembered by his daughter, Susan Filípek, and Ivo Feierabend, the son of Dr. Ladislav K. Feierabend,
whose life Ivo says Jan saved.

We remember Jan fondly and celebrate his life and all that he gave back to those who came to the U.S. as he once had, seeking opportunities and a new place to call home.

Remembering Bishop Esterka
Bishop Peter Esterka, a native of Czechoslovakia, who served Czech expats in USA, Canada and Australia, died in California on August 10, 2021 at the age 85.

As a young man, Peter Esterka escaped from Czechoslovakia, made his way to Rome, and studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Lateran University. After three years as an Assistant pastor in Texas, he returned to Rome to earn his doctorate in theology. In 1980, he was named a full professor of theology. He assisted in several parishes and from 1974 he was chaplain (Lt. Col.) in the Air Force Reserve Unit in Minneapolis.

On July 1999 Pope John Paul II. named Msgr. Peter Esterka Auxiliary Bishop of Brno and entrusted him with the spiritual care of Czech Catholics abroad. In 2013, he was awarded the Gratias Agit prize.

The same year Bishop Esterka retired, but he continued to minister to the Czech community in California - in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco, by holding monthly Masses in the Czech language until 2018.

A memorial ceremony took place in a unique Christ (Crystal) Cathedral in Garden Grove, Southern California. The impressive building is known as the “largest glass building in the world” with one of the largest musical instruments (organ) in the world.

Bishop Esterka was an extraordinary man who touched many lives across three continents. He was loved and admired by many for his kind and personal form of ministry. The dignified ceremony was attended by about 150 guests; representatives of SVU LA, Sokol Los Angeles, Sokol San Francisco, Karicka San Diego, Knights of Columbus, and many Bishop Esterka’s colleagues from surrounding dioceses.

After the Farewell Mass, Bishop Esterka’s remains were flown from Los Angeles to his final resting place in the Czech Republic.
Stunning New Preciosa Chandelier at LAX
Are you traveling through LAX? Make sure to check out the timeless chandelier CrystalSwell created by the Czech company Preciosa.

The international terminal at Los Angeles Airport (LAX) has a stunning new chandelier courtesy of Czech glassmaker Preciosa. The lighting firm worked with Corgan architectural and interior designers to create a dynamic installation that can withstand
up to seven degrees on the Richter scale.

The installation shines brightly at the recently opened West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal. Crystal Swell spans three levels and is inspired by an ocean wave breaking on the nearby ocean shore. It combines the simplicity associated with the “mid-century jet age” modern design of the International Terminal and the structural requirements needed to meet the stringent seismic codes developed for installations of this nature.
