Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park - Foothill Staging Area

September 8, 2024 @ 10 am

Let's start the new school year with a 3 mile loop hike in the hills of Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park. We will meet at 10 am - see the "parking" button, before it gets too hot as the hike will start with a steady uphill.

But going up means we will have some beautiful views of the valley around Dublin and Pleasanton as well as Mt. Diablo. Parking is free.

The area is dog friendly so I am bringing mine :-)

See you at 10 am!

Czech and Slovak Festival

Celebrating 120 years of Sokol SF

Saturday, October 12, 2024 11 am - 4pm

in OrindaCommunity Center & Park

Be a part of our Czech and Slovak community and this wonderful event celebrating the Day of Our Culture!

We have a treat for you!

16 traditional Moravian dancers from United Moravian Societies are coming from Illinois to perform for us.

If you are available to help us with picking up the dancers at the airport on Friday and dropping them off on Sunday or bringing them to and from the event

or

providing accommodations for them, that would be fantastic!

We are also looking for VOLUNTEERS to help us run the event smoothly.

If you are interested please contact us at sokolsfevents@gmail.com

La Trattoria Bohemia from Sacramento and DJ Bistro from Concord will take care of filling our bellies with delicious traditional Czech foods like svičková with "knedlik" and jitrnice and jelitka.

For those with a sweet tooth, there will be "lazenske oplatky" from Sacramento Cookie Factory and Martina Ladova will showcase her kolacky and other sweet pastries available for purchase.

Daniela Mahoney is coming from Portland! You might remember Daniela from our zoom class. Daniela will be offering Easter Egg decorating class in her first session and corn husk doll making class in her second session

Lenka Glassner is the author of a humorous travel book "Czeching In". She is an oil and water color artist; felts wool, adds a sparkle of life to her playful fairies and angels; decorates "kraslice", and she created our festival's logo!!!

Did you know that Tabor, Czech Republic is a sister city to Orinda? They host a high school student from Tabor every year! They will have a booth to answer your questions

Free Mobile Czech Book library will be on site as well for you to take new reading material home.

And it would not be a Czech festival without Czech beer!

You can look forward to beers like Primator on tap and Lev Lion Beers

Vinne Sklepy Lechovice wines will be available and we will be sampling R. Jelinek products too.

We're also thrilled to welcome the students from the Czech School of California who will be on hand with some entertaining singing and historical presentation. They will have staff answering your questions about the school and enrollment as well.

Musical Sokol members will be playing for you who hope to engage our audience in sing-alongs of beloved Czech songs!

Members of the staff from the Czech Consulate in Los Angeles will be present to provide information about their services and to answer questions about those services.

Please note that they will not be providing services, other than to allow individuals to register to vote remotely per a recent change in Czech laws.

And there will be much more.

Mark your calendars!

See you on October 12th

Please bring cash to purchase your food and drinks.

You might want to bring you lawn chairs and/or blankets as well.

This is a big event, so we invite everyone who would like to contribute in any shape or form to let us know!

We are looking for volunteers for the event, so consider getting involved in your community

In Ryder Park, San Mateo, CA

Registration is open!

Sokol San Francisco and the Czech School of California will again celebrate the Day of the Republic with a picnic and Sokolský Běh this year!

This is our fourth year!

We are looking forward to seeing your friendly faces again!

It is so great to see such a strong community!

For general information about the run and its history, go to: https://www.behrepubliky.cz/

Our picnic and Sokol SF Beh Republiky will take place at the same place

as last year:

  • Sunday, October 27, 2024
  • Seal Point Park, Ryder Park Picnic Area; San Mateo, CA.

There are three categories for the run:

  • children under 10 (2014 and younger)
  • children under 14 (2010 - 2013)
  • and adults (all born before 2010)

The registration fee for an adult is $10

There is no registration fee for children but they need to be registered to run

(so we have their starting number and medal as well as prizes)

Please register ASAP!

Should you have any difficulties with registration or payment, please contact us at sokolsfevents@gmail.com

You do not need to run to come to the picnic, everyone is welcome;

you can help us cheer on the runners and

spend time with your fellow Czechs and Slovaks.

Please read the instructions carefully!

Everyone is welcome to join us for the picnic and the run!

Sokol San Francisco members who register for the run by September 30, 2023 will receive a complimentary Sokolsky Beh Republiky Under Armour T-shirt from Sokol SF.

After you complete the registration

please send an email to sokolsfevents@gmail.com

with your name and T-shirt size.

Sizes are limited so register and send in your size early.

First come, first served.

Due to the logistics of getting the race bibs and medals etc. from the Czech Republic to the USA,

you need to register by September 15th, 2023

to have a guaranteed this year's participant's medal!

You can register after this date all the way to October 24, 2024

but T-shirt (size), bib, and medal will not be guaranteed

After the run, we will have a picnic sponsored by Sokol San Francisco and the Czech School of California.

Charcoal for the grills, water and coffee will be provided.

Bring your own picnic lunch and maybe something to share.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the picnic and at the starting line!

Mark your calendars and start training!

If you are not a member of Sokol San Francisco you might be able to purchase a T-shirt in the morning during check-in. As the number of T-shirts and sizes is limited due to logistics, it is on a first come, first serve basis as well.

More information can be found under the "Registration is open!" link

Registration is open!

Thank you, Jaroslave, for sharing your story!

Getting out

I decided in 1976 that I would not spend the rest of my life living in the socialist / communist country of Czechoslovakia.

And would get out of the “Workers paradise”at any cost.

Traveling to any capitalistic west European country was not possible, but travel to other communist countries was allowed. And that was my plan. I booked a two week group trip to the Adriatic sea in Yugoslavia. It was organized by a local travel agency. I was hoping that it would be a little easier to cross the western border there....

Czech-Slovak store in NY warms the hearts and stomachs of expats far from home

Getting coarse flour for crumble topping or the typical Czech cottage cheese needed for the country’s delicious kolaches is not easy in America. Many Czech and Slovak expats have these items delivered from Polish shops. But for those in the know, there is a store selling the things that Czechs crave when far from home. The Czech-Slovak mixed goods store on Jackson Street has been operating in New York for over two decades.
