Celebrating Solano's Workforce:
2nd Annual Workforce Recognition Gala
Last month the WDB celebrated its 2 nd Annual Celebrating Solano’s Workforce Gala to honor workforce participants, businesses, community partners and youth leadership in Solano County!
 
The event began with opening remarks from the WDB’s Executive Director/President, Heather Henry, recognizing WDB Board members and staff in attendance. Followed by the acknowledgement of elected officials, donors and sponsors by the Master of Ceremonies, Pippin Dew, City of Vallejo’s Vice Mayor. These included representatives from U.S. Congressman John Garamendi’s office and California Senator Bill Dodd’s Office, City of Dixon Councilman, Larry Bird and Solano County Chief Administrative Officer, Birgitta Corsello. Sponsors included: AIC Retirement Services, Dormatech Mechanical System, Napa-Solano Building & Construction Trades Council, Napa-Solano Central Labor Council, Quali-Serv Janitorial, STR Building and Valero Benicia Refinery. 
 
Sarah Treuhaft, Managing Director from PolicyLink was the keynote speaker and discussed the economic imparity of equity in Solano County. Following her keynote, the awards ceremony began. This year’s winners were Maria Chavez (Workforce Champion), Dominga Mares (Workforce Champion), Marco Lopez-Guevara (Future Workforce Leader), The Daily Desk (Business Workforce Champion), Cache Creek Casino Resort & Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation (Business Workforce Champion), Solano Public Health (Community Workforce Champion), and The Department of Child Support Services (Community Workforce Champion). 
 
Honorable mentions included: La Clinica, a CA Health Center, Northern CA Laborers Training Center, SER Jobs for Progress, Inc. and Stephanie Gelman.

8-Hour Hazardous Waste Refresher Course
October 16, 2019
NEW LOCATION : WDB (500 Chadbourne Road, Fairfield)
This is the annual Refresher Course that OSHA requires for hazardous waste workers. The course reviews material from the 40-Hour Basic Course, discusses lessons learned from accidents, and presents new procedures and regulatory changes. Upon successful completion of this course, each worker receives an "8-Hour Refresher Card" that certifies the worker to continue hazardous waste work for another 12 months.

Pumpkin Patch & Train Rides

Western Railway Museum (5848 State Highway 12, Suisun City)
 
At the Pumpkin Patch, you can purchase your pumpkins, as well as snacks, drinks and other homemade specialties.
 
There are plenty of activities at the pumpkin patch such as tractor rides, field maze, pumpkin chucking, petting zoo, pony rides and the giant hay bale fortress!
 
All proceeds benefit the Western Railway Museum (a nonprofit educational institution) and the local Rotary Clubs who provide thousands of dollars to local community and youth activities each year.
 
The museum opens at 9:30 AM and the first train to the Pumpkin Patch departs at 10:00 AM.
 
Trains run at 30-minute intervals, with the last train from the Pumpkin Patch at 4:30 PM.

How to play:
 
  • Step 1: Register
  • Step 2: Pick up your team's race gear and instructions at the Welcome Center on Thursday, October 10 from 9:00am - 6:00pm or Friday, October 11 from 9:00am - 4:00pm.
  • Step 3: Your team packet will have instructions on how to download the game app and other fun goodies inside.
  • Step 4: Decorate your car and your team (You might win a prize for best team spirit!)
  • Step 5: The game turns on Saturday, October 12, at 9:00am. The game turns off at 1:00pm.
  • Step 6: Join us at 2:00pm for the Awards Celebration and small bites to eat.
  • During play: You will be submitting a photo or video, while other times you’ll be checking-in at a specific location or solving a puzzle or riddle.
 
While you receive the points right away, all submissions are subject to review by the Gamekeeper. Sometimes you’ll even get bonus points if your submission is extra impressive!

Come one, Come all! The Solano County Sheriff's Office has partnered up Cool Patch Pumpkins and the 100 Club of Solano & Yolo Counties to host a 1st Annual- First Responder Day on October 13th, 2019 from 10am- 3pm at the the Cool Pumpkin Patch in Dixon.
 
This is a great opportunity to come out with the family, checkout and meet your local First Responders and let the kids explore Police Cars, SWAT BEAR, Fire Trucks, Boats, Jet Skis, Bounce Houses & MORE!
 
Cool Patch Pumpkins will be offering discounted tickets to local First Responders and their families with valid identification for the corn maze, corn bath, hayrides and more!
 
Don't miss out on the 60+ ACRES of CORN MAZE FUN on our 1st Annual First Responder Appreciation Day from 10am-3pm.

Calling all ghosts & goblins! Join us for a fun, Halloween-themed family hike. We will venture out on an easy 1.5-mile hike on the gravel trail around the retention pond at the Wetlands Edge trailhead of the Napa Bay River Trail.
 
Our friends at Napa County Resource Conservation District will be on hand teach us about the nocturnal animals that frequent our trail. Costumes are encouraged, light fall snacks will be provided. And don't forget your trick or treat bags!

The WDB oversees federally-funded workforce services through the Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (WIOA) of 2014 on behalf of Solano County. Services include the American Job Center of California System, called the Solano Employment Connection in Solano County, and intensive programs to support the talent development of the county.
