Prevent Blindness Encourages Eye Safety for the Upcoming April 8 Total Eclipse

The eclipse on April 8th will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2045. Its path of totality in North America will begin in Mexico and pass through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine before ending in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. However, a partial eclipse will be visible throughout the continental United States.

Preschool and Early Childhood Solar Eclipse Lesson and Book

The April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse takes place on a Monday when schools will be in session, ranging from early to late afternoon (1:40 pm CDT totality in Dallas, Texas, to 3:32 pm EDT in Caribou, Maine). Prevent Blindness is offering a number of resources to help students and teachers make the most of this unique event.

The Prevent Blindness "Eye Learn About Vision Health and Protection: Your Eyes and the Eclipse" lesson plan follows the most up-to-date National Health Education Standards Performance Indicators for Pre-K to 2nd grade. This lesson is intended for use with children aged 3 to 5 years old. The eclipse lesson and the "Between the Sun and the Earth" children's book are available free for download in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.

Prevent Blindness Partners with the East Coast Migrant Head Start Project (ECMHSP) to Offer Eclipse Education

The American Astronomical Society has awarded an Eclipse Mini-Grant to Prevent Blindness for a Preschool Eclipse Project for the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse. Prevent Blindness is partnering with the East Coast Migrant Head Start Project (ECMHSP) to offer eye safety education for children in 48 ECMHSP centers across the US.

The Preschool Eclipse Project will help young children and their families in migrant communities to learn about solar eclipses and how to safely view them. Prevent Blindness will provide its book and eclipse lesson plan for preschool children to explain the science principles of how the Sun, Moon, and Earth are connected to share the wonder and awe of solar eclipses and how to view them safely.
