Diocese of Richmond Statement on the Recent CDC Mask Announcement
We are aware that on Thursday, May 13th, the CDC released advised guidelines on mask-wearing. The CDC said: “If you are fully vaccinated against COVID19, you can resume activities without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal or territorial laws, incl. local business and workplace guidance.” In response to this, Governor Northam’s office said, “We are reviewing the new mask and distancing recommendations and will update our guidance accordingly." Until such time as Bishop Knestout revises the current mask requirements for the Diocese of Richmond, please continue to wear a face mask while inside the church building. We will continue to keep you posted on any changes in the coming weeks.

A direct and compelling headline
May God’s peace and mercy be with you and those you love.

I have a couple of things to remind you of and a couple of things to alert you to as well.

Don’t forget that The Ecumenical Novena to the Holy Spirit began on Thursday. If you haven’t joined in, you can start now. You can find the novena here (https://cmax.tv/pentecost?via=adc). Or by clicking on last week’s pastor’s update/email, or go to the Diocese of Richmond Website (https://richmonddiocese.org/). Cmax TV is also airing many times a day, each day a prayer service of praise and prayer from somewhere throughout the world. Catholics and Pentecostals are praying together for the Holy Spirit who- rejuvenates, unites, and heals.

If you haven’t yet given to the Diocesan Annual Appeal, please do so. Again On the diocesan Website (https://richmonddiocese.org/), you will find information about the appeal and what it supports: direct assistance programs in our parishes, including the Williamsburg House of Mercy, campus and youth ministries, the support of our mission parishes, formation programs for laity, priests and deacons, to name a few. Even our parish gets back a chunk of the funds to support special programs.

The Goepper Scholarship Fund is for the youth of Saint Bede who attend Walsingham Academy. If you wish to contribute to the scholarship, you can make a gift to the attention of our Development Director, Sam Samorian.

At the Pentecost Vigil on May 22, we will receive two adults into full communion and confirm them along with two of our teens. At the Spanish Mass on May 23, two people will be confirmed and one of those will also receive his first Communion. We will use the Vigil readings, which makes this liturgy slightly longer than usual.

Lastly, we remind you:

This Sunday, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Stay well and, we will see you at Mass. Be kind and pray for each other.
Prayerful Reflection for Mothers May 2021
Provided by USCCB

In the Blessed Virgin Mary, we are given the model of motherhood. When the angel Gabriel appeared to her, Mary accepted the invitation to be the mother of Jesus, who is “the way and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). Her unexpected pregnancy presented many challenges. Yet the path laid before Mary was not easy, she chose to give of herself in sacrificial love. Mothers with unexpected or challenging pregnancies can likely relate to the experience of our Blessed Mother, as they, too, often face difficulties in answering God’s call to welcome new life. During all times of difficulty and anxiety, we pray that Our Lady will draw pregnant mothers close to her heart and, through her intercession, bring comfort, encouragement, and joyful hope. In bravely living out their vocation, mothers reflect the sacrificial love of Christ on a daily basis. With the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Life as our guide, may we work to support all mothers.
May all mothers be blessed and numerous graces poured out upon them during this month of Mary.
Novena to the Holy Spirit
You are invited to participate in an ecumenical Novena to the Holy Spirit, May 13-22, commemorating the 120th anniversary of the Pentecostal movement! The movement began in 1897 when Pope Leo XIII decreed that this novena would occur annually prior to Pentecost Sunday. Catholic bishops and Pentecostal leaders will lead us in prayer for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our world to change hearts and overcome what divides us. The concluding event will be the Pentecostal Vigil celebrated by Pope Francis at 9 p.m. Rome time (3 p.m. EDT). More information, including resources and instructions on how to participate in the international prayer service, can be found at www.Pentecost.cmax.tv.
Outdoor Mass on May 24
Mass will be held outside in the piazza at 7 pm for the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. Please bring your own chair. Confessions will be at 6 pm in the confessionals. In case of rain, Mass will be celebrated inside the church.

Have you recently moved or changed your number? Please let us know of any information that has recently changed so we can update our system and keep you informed. Please include your first and last name in the email.
New Website
We are in the final stages of editing our new website and hope to launch it within the next couple of weeks. We would like a panel of parishioners to review the website to make sure it flows, and to give back constructive criticism. If you are interested in being one of the first to view the brand new website and offer your critiques, please contact Brittney Kinstetter.
Knights of Columbus Christmas Tree Survey
The Knights of Columbus is conducting a survey to gather information on selling live Christmas trees for the 2021 Christmas season. If you purchase live Christmas trees every year, your input will be most helpful. The survey is only 3 questions long and will take less than 2 minutes to fill out. The link for the survey is below. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Liturgy and Music
Joy Ministry
Join the ministry that brings Jesus to those who are homebound and not able to attend Mass on Sundays. There is a need for this ministry in our community, especially during Covid times. If you have a calling for sharing your time the Joy Ministry is a great option for you. Please contact Deacon Bill for information [email protected]
In the Community
Catholic Scout Emblem Program
This program is for those ages 14 to 21 years old either in a troop or venture crew. It will help scouts fully develop a Christian way of life within a faith community through discernment of service and ministry. Participants will explore their baptismal call to bring awareness of their current and future calls from God to understand their primary vocation of giving witness to the Gospel of Christ. They will look at the inner self, secular community, and church community. For more information contact Ms. Terri Chang at [email protected] by May 20.
Saint Bede Stewardship
Have you ever wondered about the connection between Saint Bede and Walsingham Academy? It dates to 1947 when Walsingham was started by our founding Pastor, Father Thomas Walsh. The school and parish have always had a close but separate organizational relationship. One of our parishioners, H. Holtman “Merc” Goepper left a wonderful legacy for parishioners who wanted to send their children to Walsingham but needed some financial assistance. Since 1994, the Goepper Fund has provided scholarships for Saint Bede families in need. This year, the need is particularly great, enrollment is increasing and one parish family has agreed to match up to $12,500 in contributions so that families will be able to begin or continue their education at Walsingham. If you would like to support this effort, contact Sam Samorian ([email protected] or 757-229-3631 ext. 2315) and he can provide information on contributing to this special fund.
Williamsburg House of Mercy
Williamsburg House of Mercy is asking for your help with some items for the food pantry. They are in particular need of beans, mac and cheese, instant mashed potatoes, saltine crackers, rice, cereal, and feminine hygiene products. You can drop off your donations at the church this weekend. Thank you for your continued generosity as we work together to continue to feed our community.
