Inward & Outward at Gallery A3
in Amherst, Massachusetts, through July
Laura Holland, Purple & Yellow, accordion book with photographs.
Gallery A3 reopens its doors on July 1 with Inward & Outward after a long year of only window displays and no public visitations. Now, Inward & Outward invites guests inside, to look in all directions at the hand-made accordion books of Laura Holland along with the oil paintings and monotype prints of Janet W. Winston. The show allows viewers to exercise the new lens many have developed over the past year; to see and share what artists have seen from their eyes on all scales. From Holland’s eyes “home became my world, I discovered small-scale intimate still lives in eggshells on the counter, carrot peels in the sink, and pans of soapy water...I peered deeper inside domestic objects and pushed images further toward abstraction,” which turned into the books of photographs. And Winston saw the view of the entire universe, places that are infinite, noting inspiration in “the importance of the sun and stars in Mayan culture and cosmology” and “the Yucatan geology of porous limestone earth” yet she sees the “inmate miniature scale to the far view of the magnificent mountains” showing that what’s inward, and what’s outward, connects, based on perception. Gallery A3 is located at 28 Amity Street 1D, Amherst, Massachusetts. As of now, Gallery A3 is open Thursday–Sunday from 3–7 p.m. There will also be an Artist Forum Online on Thursday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. which is free and open to the public with pre-registration. All About Us at Brookline Arts Center
in Brookline, Massachusetts, through October 31
Ponnapa Prakkamakul, All About Us.
Brookline Arts Center presents All About Us, a living public art sculpture, which actively contributes to the local ecosystem of the Greater Boston Area as a food source for local pollinators, through October 31, in the Monmouth Park. Visitors have the opportunity to watch the three pieces created show the glacial movement forming the land the piece resides on. “The sculptural pollinator garden” is a collaborative project between Ponnapa Prakkamakul and the Fabrication Studio at Sasaki. The artist holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and used her expert knowledge to insure the layers of sediment — Boston’s Puddingstone and Boston Blue Clay — were accurate to the unique underground conditions of the city. In addition to the geographical details, messages in braille translated by Amber Pearcy “aim to express the visual representation of the pattern in words for an inclusive experience.” Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, Brookline, Massachusetts. A workshop will be held Saturday, June 26 from 1–3 p.m. For more information, visit https://brooklineartscenter.com/.
