Food and Beverage Processing Trends in 2019: So Much is Changing; So Much Has Stayed the Same
By: Jay Garner
President, Garner Economics LLC
Much is changing in the food and beverage (F&B) processing sector. Yet, much has stayed the same from previous years. What’s changing and why? First, consumer preferences always dictate how food manufacturers create new products, which often times results in new production facilities, or at the very least, a shift in production lines (which is a significant equipment expense). And with millennials and Generation Z consumers driving much of the product changes, expect even more product evolution for healthier, better-for-you foods.

Episode 57: Notebook from The Guild- Four Takeaways from Four Consultants
At the Site Selectors Guild Annual Conference in Salt Lake City this past March, Jay Garner sat down with Andy Levine of “The Project” podcast from DCI to discuss the role of talent and the site selection process. Jay is featured at the end of the podcast and speaks specifically about the overarching role business climate plays in the siting process. We are all focused on talent, which we should be, but talent has been an integral part of location decisions forever. It’s just much more profound now because of changing demographics. We sometimes lose sight that business climate - those polices, laws and environment that state and local government enact or promote, will make or break a project at the end of the day. We saw this first hand with Amazon HQ2 reversing their decision to be in Queens, NY as a result of the political environment in that community.

The Death of Manufacturing in the U.S. Has Been Greatly Exaggerated
According to Market Watch, last year, 264,000 new manufacturing jobs were added in the U.S., representing the highest number of new workers since 1988. As a percent of the total workforce, manufacturing rose for the first time since 1984. It will never be like it was in 1949 when 30% of the U.S. workforce were employed in manufacturing, but there is a rebound happening. Automation, increased productivity, U.S. tax and trade policies and inexpensive labor from foreign countries, all helped drive a significant reduction in manufacturing employment in the U.S. Today, a more business friendly regulatory and tax environment and the threat (and imposition) of tariffs is seeing a resurgence in U.S. manufacturing investment. The related infographic shows where the highest clusters of manufacturing employment exists in the U.S.
