Solving Global Problems Through Interdisciplinary Dialogue: The World Academy of Art and Science and the Legacy of Einstein, Oppenheimer and Russell
The World Academy of Art and Science was founded in 1960 by a group of distinguished individuals including Nobel laureates, scientists, philosophers, and artists who were deeply concerned about the future of humanity. Among its early members were prominent thinkers such as Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer, and Bertrand Russell. Their goal was to create a transnational, multidisciplinary forum where intellectuals from around the world could come together to discuss the major challenges facing civilization and contribute ideas that would promote global well-being, peace, and progress.
The Academy was established as an independent, non-governmental organization committed to addressing global problems that transcend national boundaries and disciplines. At its core is the belief that the complexity of modern challenges—from climate change and economic inequality to conflict, governance, and technological disruption—requires collaboration across fields of knowledge and across cultures.
The Academy embraces both scientific inquiry and humanistic values, striving to integrate the arts and sciences in ways that advance human dignity and sustainable development. The mission of the World Academy of Art and Science is to foster a global network of thinkers and practitioners who are dedicated to social innovation, ethical leadership, and the advancement of knowledge in service to humanity. It operates on the principle that intellectual leadership should not be confined to academia or politics alone, but shared broadly among individuals from science, the arts, education, diplomacy, industry, and civil society.
Through international conferences, workshops, publications, and collaborative initiatives, the Academy addresses a wide range of global concerns. Its programs include:
-
New Paradigm Project – focused on developing human-centered, sustainable alternatives to current economic and political systems.
-
Global Leadership in the 21st Century (GL21) – a collaboration with the United Nations Office at Geneva to promote inclusive, adaptive, and values-based leadership.
-
Future of Education – reimagining education to prepare individuals for rapid technological, social, and environmental change.
-
