Rescue Ranger
May 2021
We actually had several activities over the past month and it is great to be playful once again.

In addition to our Meet and Greets, we had the honor of participating in Binky and Bell's Birthday Bash at Zoomy Dogs. Thank you Binky and Bell for your support! We had a very successful Spring Swim with 65 dogs having the time of their lives at Montague Lake. And we also had some very talented artists participate in our Wine & Design Pet Portrait fundraiser in Cary, with another one in Durham this weekend.

We can't thank our volunteers enough for all you do. Without our amazing village, we wouldn't be able to rescue and rehab dogs in need.

Spring Swim
Montague Lake
Mother’s Day, May 9th, NRGRR sponsored our first swim in over a year. The weather was perfect for a day of reunions and celebration. In total we had 103 guests and 65 dogs who attended. A little lower than previous years but still a great turnout.

Click here to see some amazing photos from the day's festivities. Thank you Abby Mook for taking great pictures!

Our Summer Splash will be held on Saturday, July 24th. We hope to see you there!
Name A Foster Dog
Become a Golden Guardian
A fun way to support NRGRR is to become a Golden Guardian Sponsor. And now, with our reduced price of a $50 donation, it is even easier for you to name a foster dog!

As a Golden Guardian sponsor, you will remain connected to your sponsor dogs journey to their furever home.

All of our rescue dogs have unique names as their identifiers, so you may have to get creative to ensure the name has not been used before. You are encouraged to use a special name to honor a loved one, or a funny or silly name to reflect the Golden's personality.

With your sponsorship, we will list the foster that you've named on our Golden Guardian web page including their photo and your reason for their special name. There is also an option to give the gift of a Golden Guardian sponsorship to a friend or loved one. Click the button below for more information and to purchase your sponsorship.
2022 NRGRR Calendar Contest
The 2022 NRGRR Calendar Contest is now accepting entries, so get your cameras out and start taking photos of your NRGRR alum! Photo submissions will be accepted through June 27th.

The calendar contest is a great fundraiser for NRGRR every year and so we hope you will participate. You can submit several photos if you like; each photo submitted is $10.00. Our goal is to select one photo per person/family for the voting. Additional photos will be used throughout the calendar as thumbnails, space permitting.

Please follow the submission guidelines on the rules page closely to ensure your photos are eligible for selection in the voting contest. For example, they must be high resolution photos in horizontal orientation to be considered for one the 12 monthly photos, and there must be no people in the photo.

Voting will begin July 1st and run through July 31st. We hope to have the calendars ready to sell by mid-October so you can stock up for holiday gifts.

Our goal this year is to raise $20,000 with the calendar contest…will you help us? We can’t wait to see your photo submissions!

If you have any questions you can reach out to Kerry or Scott at nrgrrcalendarcontest@gmail.com
Golden Moments
Monthly Photo Contest
Romeo and Hope
Most Playful Dog
As we enter into a new year we look forward with optimism, despite an understanding that we will be faced with many of the same challenges and obstacles as in 2020. In light of that, we want to ask our readers to help us create “Golden Moments” throughout 2021 to lighten our hearts and remind us why we do what we do!

Come on, let's PLAY!!! Congratulations to Romeo and Hope for being selected as the most playful dogs. As a result of winning this month's contest, her owner will receive a 25% off coupon to the NRGRR online store. Next month we're looking for your best swimming/water photos, so get your entries in by June 8th. Email your photos to nrgrr.rescueranger@gmail.com.
Thanks to everyone that submitted photos this month. We had a lot of submissions and once again it was really tough to pick a winner. A select few are shown below. All photos entered can be seen on our Golden Moments web page. There were a lot of swimming and water pictures that can be resubmitted for next month. Hint. Hint. Sorry, we can't process videos for this contest.
Golden Moments Entry Information
The Golden Moments photo contest is to simply share photos of NRGRR alumni and current fosters on our website, the Rescue Ranger newsletter, and on our social media pages. One photo will be selected monthly to win a 25% off coupon for the NRGRR online store. The winner will be selected based on alignment with the monthly theme as listed below, as well as composition and clarity.

Please ensure the photos are focused and clear and sent in the original size. Close ups are best as they will be displayed in thumbnails. Your photos can be horizontal or vertical and can include people with the NRGRR alum or foster dog. (We cannot accept any professional photos and by submitting your photo you acknowledge NRGRR’s right to use your photo.)

We hope you will participate and make us all smile with your “Golden Moments” photos. Let us know if you have any questions and we're looking forward to seeing your masterpieces!

Volunteer Spotlight
We Rescue Dog—What’s Your Superpower?
In 2020 we highlighted ten of our fabulous fosters; human fosters that is! Fosters are the lifeblood of any Rescue, but it still takes many other volunteers to do what we do to Rescue, Rehab, and Adopt dogs to their furever homes. Throughout 2021 we will be spotlighting various volunteers and their superpowers! We’ll let you know more about what they do, how they got involved with NRGRR, and how you can participate in some of the volunteer opportunities available through Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue and develop YOUR Superpower. Together we are Stronger, Together we are Golden!
Samantha Flynn
NRGRR Transporter
Just before Christmas 2017, Samantha’s beloved Golden Holly died. Consumed with grief, she realized she needed to channel that emotion in a positive direction. She had been a longtime supporter of NRGGR but now wanted to do more. Someone suggested she try transporting. Below is what Samantha had to say about her experience as a transporter for NRGRR.

Transporting is only a small part of the process of helping dogs find Forever Homes, but I learned that it is an important step. Whether a dog arrives at a shelter as a stray, as an owner-surrender, or sadly as a rescue from inhumane conditions, they all have one thing in common, they need to get out of the shelter! Transporters pick up dogs from shelters and take them to one of NRGRR’s veterinary partners for evaluation and treatment if necessary. From that point, NRGGR places them into foster care and, eventually, into their forever homes.
Since February 2018, I've given thirty-five (35) Freedom Rides. Each one is an honor, and each is a unique adventure.

There are the joyful ones, like the three sweet, beautiful puppies who were reluctantly surrendered by the owners.
There are the miracles, like dear Mary, our Christmas 2018 mama-to-be, who was either a stray or abandoned. Roger Stowe and I tag-teamed for this journey. She gave birth to eleven healthy puppies just days after getting to the hospital.
There are the adventures, like poor Da Vinci. He was a stray who was missing fur from a large part of his back. Apparently, the soft crate I used was not to his standards. He quickly figured out how to open the top. In my rear-view mirror I saw this goofy smiling face pop up! He was sweet, trusting, and loved the ride. He just didn't like that crate. (I made a mental note to use a wire crate from then on).
Then there are the true missions of mercy. Pericles had been found in a ditch with multiple fractures in his back and hind quarters. Despite his pain, he was sweet and gentle. Sadly, the vets determined that he was too badly injured to be saved. This was heartbreaking, but we had the comfort of knowing that he died, without pain, in a warm, safe place, surrounded by loving humans.
So, this is the life of a transporter. For anyone wanting to volunteer, but with limited time or resources, I encourage you to give this a try. I am honored to be a part of Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue—an amazing group of people who work tirelessly to provide the love, safety, and care that every dog deserves.

We are blessed to have volunteers like Samantha to help fulfill NRGRR’s mission to Rescue, Rehab, Adopt. Thank you, Samantha Flynn, for all you do. NRGRR appreciates you!
If you are interested in volunteering as a transporter, please complete the form at the bottom of our Volunteer web page and our coordinator, Mary Anne, will reach out to you with additional information. All transporters are required to sign a liability waiver. If you have questions, please direct the email to nrgrr@hotmail.com.
Medical Tip of the Month
Food for Thought

Dog food packaging makes a lot of claims, but what does it really mean. In this month's medical blog post, our Medical Coordinator Katie McKay helps us understand what terms like “All Natural,” “Organic,” and “Human-Grade” really tell us about what is or isn't in their dog food.

Alumni Updates

When a dog becomes an NRGRR dog, they are one for life. We are able to follow our dogs' transformation from rescue-to-adopt but some of the greatest stories are about how well they are thriving in their furever home.

If you have special pictures or stories that you would like to share with us, please send them to nrgrr-alumni-updates@googlegroups.com. Your updates may be shared in our publications or social media pages.
