Spirit Week Activities August 22-28

Join us for a fun-filled week of activity to support NRGRR. On Sunday, August 22nd we will kick off our festivities with our Golden Smiles event at Triangle Beer in Cary from 2-6 PM. We hope to see lots of smiling people and dogs at this event.

Spirit Week continues on social media through the week as we celebrate with some of our biggest supporters. There will be several theme day events where you can share stories about your adopted pets. More information will be forthcoming on our social media pages and via the hashtags listed below.

Monday, August 23rd - Adoption Day - sponsored by Complete Pet Care Animal Hospital

Wednesday, August 25th - Beach Day - sponsored by ZoomyDogs!

Friday, August 27th - Flashback Friday - sponsored by Grace Park Animal Hospital

We will also have an online auction Monday through Sunday of next week with lots of great items including a week at Topsail Beach, Ippolita earrings from Bailey’s Jewelers, two tickets to a DPAC Broadway show, gift baskets, gift cards to local restaurants and businesses throughout the Triangle, and many other items. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to pick up a nice gift or even start your Christmas shopping early! Once all the gifts are finalized, the link to the aution will be posted to the NRGRR website and social media pages.

And on Saturday, August 28th we will hold our 20th Annual Golden on the Green Charity Golf Tournament at River Ridge Country Club. It’s not too late to sign up and play in the tournament as a few spaces remain.

Also, $100 sponsorship opportunities still remain for both Golden Smiles and Golden on the Green. What a great way to remember a loved one or beloved pet. We are also in need of volunteers for both of these events. More information about sponsorships and volunteer opportunities can be found in the stories below.

Volunteer Spotlight
Brenda Holden
August is a busy month for NRGRR with the 20th Anniversary of the “Golden on the Green” charity golf tournament. This month’s volunteer spotlights one of the people who has been very involved in the success of the tournament for many years, Brenda Holden.

Brenda has been a volunteer for NRGRR since around 1990 and she served on the Board of Directors for many years. Currently, Brenda is an Application Advisor, processing applications for potential adopters.
Brenda, a realtor with Fonville Morisey, has sponsored the $10,000 putting contest for “Golden on the Green” since the tournament began 20 years ago, including this year. Brenda also arranged for Johnson Lexus to sponsor a Hole-in-One contest for a two year car lease and other prizes at the tournament. Additionally, she has been a long time sponsor for the Golden Gala traditionally held in the Spring.
Brenda and her husband Steve got their first Golden Retriever in 1987 when she had just started her real estate career. She began an advertising campaign featuring her Golden Sadie, which attracted the attention of some folks at NRGRR. They reached out to her and ask her to join the rescue, which was very new and small at the time, only consisting of ten people! She and the other volunteers worked diligently to build this organization to what it is today. Brenda has certainly seen some growth and changes over the years!
Working with NRGRR and the many volunteers, year after year, has given Brenda the opportunity to give back and to associate with so many kind-minded people. Her Goldens have brought so much joy into her life and so she wants to share their blessings with others.
Jake and Bella
When asked about her top 2-3 benefits from volunteering with NRGRR, Brenda stated:

1) As an Application Advisor, interaction with the potential adopters.
2) Knowing that the rescued Goldens and golden-mixes find their forever homes.
3) The excitement of adopters when they find their Golden or golden-hearted dog.
Her advice to anyone considering volunteering for NRGRR, “Jump in with both feet. You will find volunteering so rewarding. If you can’t physically volunteer, you can sponsor some events. Any type of volunteering is so appreciated.”

Since her first Golden Daisy, Brenda and her husband have adopted from NRGRR several times, including Jake and Bella. Brenda wants others to know what a wonderful experience it is to bring a rescue into your home, show them that they are safe, and to watch them blossom as they gain the love, trust, and security that you can give them. “Wow! What a blessing!” says Brenda.
Thank you Brenda Holden for all you do to support NRGRR’s mission to Rescue, Rehab, and Adopt. You have been a blessing to this organization and have helped shape it into the amazing rescue it is today. We appreciate you and are hoping someone will finally sink that third putt this year and walk away with the $10,000 prize! Thank you for sponsoring the putting contest once again.

Alumni Updates

When a dog becomes an NRGRR dog, they are one for life. We are able to follow our dogs' transformation from rescue-to-adopt but some of the greatest stories are about how well they are thriving in their furever home.

If you have special pictures or stories that you would like to share with us, please send them to Your updates may be shared in our publications or social media pages.
