Rescue Ranger
July 2021
Have we ever told you that we love you? The NRGRR village is amazing! Over the past month you have stepped up in so many ways it is astonishing.

When the CDC announced a ban on importing international dogs we had to act fast. We needed money and volunteers to get as many dogs here as possible by the July 14th deadline. You came through with over $50,000 raised for international rescue and our transporters traveled over 4,000 miles to rescue 20 dogs from Turkey and China. Incredible!

We also had the unthinkable happen when one of our frightened dogs bolted on intake. The call went out for help in the North Raleigh area so many people dropped everything to join the search. Countless hours were spent roasting weenies, setting traps, answering calls, moving signs, and posting to neighborhood groups. Poor Hartmann remains at large and sightings have waned but we are not giving up. Please come home, Hartmann!

Meanwhile, regular activities in the rescue continue to ramp up as we get more dogs and more freedom. Our operations team has been busy with an onslaught of dogs coming in and a continuing increase in adoptions with 20 dogs adopted in June. And our volunteers have been busy planning several events as we are able to meet in person again. Learn more about these exciting events below and come out and show your support for NRGRR. If you're a golfer, we hope to see you on the links next month!

Finally, don't forget to vote for your favorite photos in the 2022 NRGRR Calendar Contest. The entries are great and the top 12 vote getters will be featured in the monthly spread of our 2022 NRGRR Calendar. The July 31st deadline is coming quickly, so vote now!

International Rescue Threatened
Thank You Donors and Volunteers!!
We couldn’t have done it without you!

What a crazy month it has been since the CDC announced a ban on imports of dogs from over 100 international countries, including Turkey and China, where we are actively rescuing needy dogs. We put out a panicked plea for help and our village came through as you always do and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Because of your compassion, we raised an incredible amount exceeding $50,000 to rescue as many dogs as we could before the deadline! And of course we couldn’t have accomplished this without our tireless volunteers who coordinated, transported, and helped clean the nasty crates that have travelled thousands of miles with the dogs inside. Our transporters drove a collective 4,000+ miles to Dulles, JFK, and Atlanta International airport’s to bring these dogs home to NRGRR.
We were successful in bringing in 20 dogs from overseas, including 18 from Turkey and 2 from China. Sadly, the rescue of the mom and 7 puppies that we were desperately trying to get out of China had unforeseen complications and was cancelled at the last minute. But we are not giving up! We are working with other rescues on a plan to get them out of China to a safe country that will accept them until the ban is over. We are also investigating a campaign to petition the CDC to lift their ban on importing dogs. So please stay tuned as we will need your ongoing support to continue our Love Knows No Borders mission.

Volunteer Spotlight
Don Gelo and Julie Rigby
It was May 25th when the plea went out for a foster for a very scared dog sitting in a shelter waiting to become an NRGRR dog. Hartman was transported on May 27th but unfortunately bolted from the crate at Complete Pet Care at Falls Pointe. Falls staff and the transporter looked and attempted to catch him but with no luck.
For the next 40+ days, Julie Rigby and Don Gelo worked tirelessly, almost around the clock, to try and locate Hartman. They set up feeding stations, traps, hung trail cams, hired a dog tracker, and had an army of volunteers posting flyers around the area. Don cooked pounds of bacon and hotdogs in the woods and even sprayed liquid smoke on the trails where Hartman was spotted to appease to his sense of smell and taste, but to no avail. They left Bojangles chicken and used fire logs that smelled like KFC to try and lure him in. Hartman never took the bait but local wildlife enjoyed the delicacies.
The entire surrounding community was engaged in trying to find Hartman through social media posts, PawBoost, Triangle Lost and Found, Next Door Neighbor, and a slew of other communication channels. There were plenty of sightings, but unfortunately Hartman never entered into one of the traps that had been set. He remained elusive.

Sadly, despite Julie’s and Don’s hard work, along with all of the other dedicated volunteers who supported their efforts, Hartman has yet to be located. We still hold out hope that he may miraculously show up somewhere in the future. He was a tough case, spending most of his life in a pen with very little socialization.
Thank you Julie and Don for your dedication to help find Hartman and for being ready to jump at a moment’s notice when a call comes in with a sighting. And thank you to all of the other volunteers in the NRGRR village racing to place flyers near the latest sighting. We wish we could report that Hartman had been located and in foster care but it is obvious he is loved by the NRGRR community.
Volunteer Appreciation
This year NRGRR kicked off an appreciation program where we honor fosters and transporters each month for their dedication to our mission to rescue, rehab and adopt. Thank you so much to the following volunteers who have been recognized so far this year - combined they have fostered 45 dogs and transported 78 dogs over 12,000 miles!

We really could not do this without our incredible volunteers.
