Rescue Ranger
January 2021
President's Message

Welcome to 2021 - I hope you all are healthy and well. If you would have told me a year ago that we all would have been quarantined in our homes for the better part of a year, I would have thought you were crazy! When everything shut down in March we were nervous - what would the year look like? Would we be able to raise money without our large fundraisers? Would we be able to bring dogs in need into the rescue and continue to find furever homes for them without hosting Meet and Greets?

If 2020 taught us anything, it was how to adapt. Close to 150 lives were saved, with 32 coming in from overseas. NRGRR, like the rest of the world, learned how to "Zoom" and do "business as usual" in remote settings. Thanks to all of our volunteers, fosters, transporters, donors, board members...we refused to halt, but rather to refocus our energy on how to continue to flourish through the pandemic. We transitioned to virtual home visits, online fundraisers, private meet and greets, etc... and we succeeded!!!

It is hopeful that 2021 will have us returning to some sense of normalcy in the coming months. Until then, we feel confident that the lives of Goldens and golden-hearted dogs will be saved because of all of you - you continue to volunteer your time, donate to our fundraising efforts, and keep NRGRR moving forward.

We are so appreciative of our Golden community and know the best is yet to come!

Tami Radzi
NRGRR Board President

2021 Events
Here is a tentative list of events we have scheduled for 2021. We will review the latest government restrictions prior to each event to determine if it will be held. At this point it looks very unlikely that we will have our Spring Swim but we are hopeful that we will be able to hold larger events sometime during the second half of the year.

  • May 9th - Spring Swim - Montague Lake - Unlikely
  • July 24th - Summer Swim - Montague Lake - TBD
  • August 28th - Golden on the Green - River Ridge Country Club - TBD
  • October 23rd - Rescue Reunion - Montague Lake - TBD

Meet and Greets will continue to be held on a case by case basis for the foreseeable future. We will announce our plans on our Meet and Greet webpage a couple of days before the scheduled date, which is the first and third Saturday of the month. Meet and Greets will be held at Zoomy Dogs, located at 5420 NC-55, Durham, NC 27713.

Golden Moments
Monthly Photo Contests
As we enter into a new year we look forward with optimism, despite an understanding that we will be faced with many of the same challenges and obstacles as in 2020. In light of that, we want to ask our readers to help us create “Golden Moments” throughout 2021 to lighten our hearts and remind us why we do what we do!

Each month we will be encouraging our volunteers and adopters to submit photos of
their NRGRR alum or current foster. Every month will have a different theme for the
photos. We are asking you to email your photos to nrgrr.rescueranger@gmail.com
(Please make sure the photos are focused and clear and sent in the original size. Close ups are best as they will be displayed in thumbnails.)
We will showcase several photos in the Rescue Ranger each month and one photo will be selected monthly to win a 25% off coupon for the NRGRR online store. The winner will be selected based on 1) alignment with the monthly theme and 2) composition and clarity. Your photos can be horizontal or vertical and can include people with the NRGRR alum or foster dog. Photos must be submitted no later than the 8th of the month. (We cannot accept any professional photos and by submitting your photo you acknowledge NRGRR’s right to use your photo.)

Here are the themes for our “Golden Moments of 2021” photo shoots.
February: Most heartfelt/ romantic dog

March: Most mischievous dog
April: Spring fever

Volunteer Spotlights
We Rescue Dogs…What’s Your Superpower?
In 2020 we highlighted ten of our fabulous fosters; human fosters that is! Fosters are the lifeblood of any Rescue, but it still takes many other volunteers to do what we do to Rescue, Rehab, and Adopt dogs to their furever homes. Throughout 2021 we will be spotlighting various volunteers and their superpowers! We’ll let you know more about what they do, how they got involved with NRGRR, and how you can participate in some of the volunteer opportunities available through Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue and develop YOUR Superpower. Together we are Stronger, Together we are Golden!
Medical Tip of the Month
Let the crazy shedding begin!

In this month's medical blog post, our Medical Coordinator Katie McKay has tapped her newest resource for some professional advice on how to handle keeping your dogs shedding under control. Is there really such a thing as deshedding treatment? What's the secret to keeping your dog from leaving so much hair behind no matter how often you comb them? Check out the blog to find out.
