The Clear Picture; Winter, 2019
Perspective By Jessica Hanson, Sales-Estimating, Heartland Glass
Firstlight Health System in Mora, Minnesota
It takes time and passion to be really great.

Twenty years ago, I never would have guessed that I would still be working for the same company that welcomed me straight out of high school! I also would not have guessed at this time I would be the parent of a high school freshman! Time flies by in the blink of an eye.

Our son, Chase, is almost 15 and right now, football is his LIFE! Every day revolves around the game he loves. He trains all year in the weight room to be the toughest guy he can be. All his hard work came to a screeching halt this summer when he broke his leg on the second day at UMD Football Camp in Duluth. He had broken his Tibia and Fibula (the two bones between the ankle and knee). It was a long boring summer for Chase. We all learned to have a little patience and grace this summer.

Chase's next biggest passion is anything that he can drive! He ended up buying a four- wheeler and worked on restoring it most of the summer. By the end of the summer, he was fully healed and cleared to play at the end of this last football season. He has already decided he is going back to football camp!

During his recovery, Chase has been working with the Physical Therapy department at the Firstlight Health System in our home town of Mora, MN, which just so happens to be our Heartland Glass feature project this quarter. I have been managing the Firstlight Health System project for about the last year or so. I was also responsible for estimating this job so I have literally seen it from start to finish. It has brought challenges in bidding and managing, but overall, this project has been very rewarding. We have developed a great working relationship with Kraus Anderson Construction who are the construction managers on the project.

There are so many advantages of running a project close to home. The top being one of the first patients to use their state-of-the-art Physical Therapy department. This facility was much needed in our area. I am very happy to send Chase to Firstlight Health for Physical Therapy. He enjoys going and using the equipment there. I love walking through the building and seeing friendly faces that I know from around town whether I’m working with my pink hard hat or there as a patient. Yes, I said pink! It was graciously given to me for Women in Construction week by my fellow peers; Garrity Gerber, Ken Schueller, David Pennertz, Luke Nelson and former employee Matt Dieser. I couldn’t do this job without my team!

I have really enjoyed working on this project and I hope to keep adding to my health care portfolio in the future. Health care projects usually incorporate leading design aspects and I am continually learning something new on these projects.
We look forward to staying in touch with what is keeping us busy here at Heartland Glass and as always, thank you for taking an interest in our company and our products.

PROJECT FEATURE:
Firstlight Health System
Mora, MN
Heartland Glass started the field work with Rick Kurowski as the lead glazier. He has since been promoted to glazing supervisor.

Ryan Huber, a.k.a. Hubie, is now leading the project in the field. "They have both been fantastic to work with and have taught me so much," said Jessica Hanson, Sales-Estimating. "Hats off to these guys!"

Heartland Glass used Old Castle Building Envelope throughout this project. The majority of the exterior envelope is using Reliance TC Curtainwall 2 ½” x 6” Champagne Anodized. "We have a 2 Story Radiused Curtainwall located in the cafeteria overlooking the courtyard," Jessica said. "There are a couple of phases left. The feature stairwell between the Emergency Department Entrance and Main Entrance and lastly the Clinic Addition. The Feature Stairwell will feature a unique design. We are excited to start on that phase!"

"Our relationship with Kraus Anderson has brought us another project for 2019; Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Baxter. Garrity Gerber was the successful bidder in the project and David Pennertz will be the Project Manager," Jessica said, "We look forward to working with Kraus Anderson again."

Welcome to the Team!
The heart of Heartland Glass is our people. We'd like you to meet the newest members of our crew; Ron Traut, Project Manager, and Dan Heiser, Shop Supervisor.

A St. Cloud area native, Ron Traut joins Heartland with 31 years at Gold’N Plump/Pilgrims Pride, leaving the company in 2018 as the senior infrastructure manager.

Traut is currently managing the renovation for the new Bad Habit Brewery in St. Joseph, a renovation to the MnDOT headquarters in Brainerd, and the new Nystroms clinic in Coon Rapids among others.

He is active in the community, enjoys spending time with his family and has recently welcomed his first grandchild Mila. “I appreciate the variety that each day brings, the team atmosphere, and working on projects in the area, “says Traut.

Heartland Glass Shop Supervisor Dan Heiser hails from Winsted, MN. He graduated from Holy Trinity High School, Winsted and went on to post-secondary school at St. Paul College.

"After driving to the Twin Cities for 19 years from St. Cloud, I finally decided to reclaim my sanity and work closer to home," Heiser said, "I wanted to stay in the glass industry. Heartland Glass has an excellent reputation, and after interviewing with Ryan, Heartland Glass felt like home."

Heiser says every day at Heartland Glass is a new adventure, and there are many different roles to fill. "One day may be routine, the next day may be a big rush to finish off a project. All challenges that I enjoy!" he said. He also loves seeing a successfully finished project. " Although I do not have a hand in every aspect, it is still rewarding working as a team to get a job done right and on time," Heiser said. "My favorite part of the job has been the people. Heartland Glass has a unique dynamic of people who are knowledgeable about the industry, and are down to earth caring people."

Heiser has two children, Carter (11) and Katelyn (5) and is the current Vice President of the Saint Cloud Blue Sox youth baseball. "I like to stay involved with the kid’s activities. I coach Carter’s Blue Sox travel baseball team, which takes up a lot of the summer and spring. Watching his soccer and Katelyn’s dance are all things I enjoy also. I’m always up for a weekend road trip when we have time." Heiser also collects sports cards and other collectibles .

Welcome Ron and Dan!
