The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Awards Program. Established in 1969 in cooperation with the National Civil Service League, the program receives sponsorship from numerous universities, associations, and government institutions. Distinguished Public Service Award Programs exist in most states throughout the United States. In addition, more than 10 states have used the New Mexico Awards Program as a model. The Distinguished Public Service Award is considered the highest award in each state. Individuals are nominated by the local, state, or federal agencies where they are employed, or by private citizens who have knowledge of their exceptional contributions to the public service. Those selected for awards are honored by the Governor, who presents an award to each recipient following a description of the awardee's exceptional contributions made to improve the public service. The Governor appoints a number of residents from around the state to serve as Awards Council Members for one-year terms. These citizens are representative of the State geographically and of the categories for award consideration. This year's Distinguished Public Service Awards will undoubtedly launch public service recognition into the new century!
We hope some of you will nominate people form the Grant County area. We have some great people here that do tremendous things for the betterment of our communities, and it would be nice for those people to be recognized.
Please click on the document link below to see and print the nomination form. Nomination forms must be received in Albuquerque by September 16, 2019.

Technically Decorating?
So, I was wading through tech industry announcements today and ran into one that set off my "don't be ridiculous" alarm. It was a smart end table; the kind you put beside your bed if you have enough space. As I read the catch line I became fascinated, yes, my current bedside end table is painfully cluttered (not as bad as it once was) but accommodating my tablet, its keyboard, my phone, a couple tools, the spare charger for a laptop, and a couple of speakers has thoroughly c
overed it to a couple of layers deep.
So, here comes Storebound to my rescue with the Sobro smart end table. Cable mess is reduced with cable management attachments in the back. There is a nice nook under the top to slide in a laptop (along with facility to keep the charging cable out of the way), USB charging ports on one side for wired-only charging products and built-in wireless charging for devices placed on the top, a chill drawer (sized to hold those 20 ounce drink bottles or water bottles for the late-night thirsties or midnight snacks) and a second drawer for stuff that would be handy near the bed but not needing immediate access. Oh yes, don't forget built-in blue-tooth speakers.
A quick check found that retailers already have the Sobro smart coffee table in stock, so I took a peek to see what kind of price such a gadget demands. Roughly $1300 dollars (with free delivery; at that price, why not?) can buy you the smart coffee table. Many of the same refinements can be found in the coffee table that the end table touts, including speakers, power ports, and the chill drawer. Throw in mood lighting and some programmable news alert abilities and there you have it.
For me, I think I can wait a while for price drops, maturing of the product and its underpinnings and what not; but maybe there are those who could really use this kind of smarts in their furniture.
Benediktson Computer, Inc. would be delighted to setup and configure one of these or any one of similar products for you. Please call us at (575)956-9723 or email to

New Mexico: Opportunity Zones are Knocking
|
|
|
 |
 |
The New Mexico Economic Development Department (NMEDD) has unveiled a new website so local governments, investors, businesses, and property owners can take advantage and connect with Opportunity Zone resources.
The state, along with NMEDD, designated 63 Opportunity Zones in 22 counties as part of the U.S. Government's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The purpose of the tax law is to attract capital investment into economically distressed areas in exchange for a reduced tax obligation.
"The Opportunity Zone program has the potential to transform parts of New Mexico and impact communities for generations to come," said Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes of the New Mexico Economic Development Department. "The state is working to educate and assist all 63 designated tracts to create an ecosystem that is open and ready for investment."
"The investment zones are a priority for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and NMEDD is working with the Governor to offer additional incentives so that New Mexico can be a leader in offering assistance and options," said Keyes.
One example of an Opportunity Zone (OZ) project is the redevelopment of a warehouse property near downtown Albuquerque into a production studio operated by NBCUniversal Studios. Owned by Garcia Realty and Development, the project at 1601 Commercial St., NE, 87102 will be the cornerstone of NBCUniversal's New Mexico audio visual operations.
Both the state of New Mexico and the city of Albuquerque are providing economic development grants. NBCUniversal in turn has promised to spend $500 million on production and hire 330 full-time employees. The economic impact of the redevelopment is estimated at $1.1 billion over a decade.
The project will generate significant economic impact in the greater Albuquerque area and also function as an anchor tenant in a designated Opportunity Zone, potentially triggering additional direct investment in the community, according to a recent economic analysis by NMEDD.
NMEDD has created an online hub to facilitate connection between resources and projects at all stages of development. Information is available for investors, businesses, communities, and partners. The website includes a map to geographically search for Opportunity Zone projects in specific counties, searchable project pipeline, and a list of Opportunity Funds at www.nmopportunity.com
Projects can be submitted to the NM OZ Project Portal. The projects are vetted by NMEDD, summarized and sent out to an email distribution list comprised of resources, investors, funding agencies and local governments. In addition, projects are connected to FundIt-Community, an inter-agency task force of state and federal funding agencies. Those interested in participating in Opportunity Zones can also contact Johanna Nelson by email with questions.
Entities interested in signing up for the email list can do so on the website here. The Economic Development Department is sponsoring an Opportunity Zone Forum from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque. Click here for the full agenda. Individuals and potential exhibitors can register for the event on the website HERE.
The NMEDD's Finance Development Team (FDT) is also offering quarterly webinars to answer questions and provide news updates on Opportunity Zones best practices. All webinars will be announced on the website and available online after the live event here. For more information, visit www.nmopportunity.com or email opportunity.zones@state.nm.us
