Keeping score. It's a big part of the Super Bowl, or any sporting event. Fans in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium will spend the evening glancing back and forth between the action on the field and the record of that action on the scoreboard. Those of us watching the game at home won't have to turn our heads to keep track of the score. There it will be, a constant presence at the corner of our screen.

Sporting events aren't the only time when people keep score. It happens a lot in relationships as well. Most of the time, that's not a good thing.

In his famous "hymn to love," 1 Corinthians 13, Paul points out that " not irritable or resentful." Resentment can build over time in even the strongest relationships, and it's usually based on some form of scorekeeping. The compulsion to keep score can be so strong that it can extend even to offenses we decided to forgive long ago. Yet, forgiveness is not truly complete until the score is zeroed out.

The big game doesn't begin until the evening, so there's plenty of time to come to worship this Sunday morning. Join us, as we think together about this other form of scorekeeping. Unlike a football game, relationship scorekeeping doesn't enhance our experience, but rather detracts from our capacity to love one another.

Communion Sunday
February 3

Communion is served on the first Sunday of every month. Here at Lamington Church, i n an effort to instill strong memories and faithful practices in our children, we invite all c hildren to stay in worship on Communion Sundays. Studies demonstrate that the earlier a person is immersed in the flow of worship the more likely worship will be an integral part of their adult life. If needed, childcare is available.
This week in music, the prelude, offertory, and postlude will feature pieces by Felix Mendelssohn. The Choir's anthem, " Song of Devotion" by John Ness Beck, is based on Philippians 1:3-11. Paul seems to have felt special affection for the church in Philippi, and begins his letter to them with words of warm regard. “I thank my God every time I remember you,” he writes, “constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you.” And what is that prayer? “...that your love may overflow more and more.” This song celebrates the love of a pastor for his people, a love they, in turn, are sharing with the world .

Pastor Carl's sermon this Sunday, "Scores Not Worth Keeping" is based on 1 Corinthians 13 . While 1 Corinthians 13—often called the “hymn to love” — is a popular choice for weddings, it’s about so much more. Paul wrote it not with couples in mind, but in order to challenge the members of a conflicted church to settle their differences. In addressing that crisis, he goes far beyond the needs of the moment to celebrate love as the greatest of spiritual gifts.

The Choir’s anthem, “Song of Devotion,” is based on Philippians 1:3-11. Paul seems to have felt special affection for the church in Philippi, and begins his letter to them with words of warm regard. “I thank my God every time I remember you,” he writes, “constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you.” And what is that prayer? “...that your love may overflow more and more.” This song celebrates the love of a pastor for his people, a love they, in turn, are sharing with the world.

Hope you will join us for Sunday worship at 10:15AM.
