Diamond Factory Brings New Creative Energy to Davis Square
This October, the former Starbucks storefront (260 Elm) in Davis Square will begin a creative new chapter as Diamond Factory, a pop-up gallery presented by Somerville Arts & Culture in partnership with gallerist Susan Berstler. Inspired by the idea that beauty can emerge under pressure, the gallery will bring art into an everyday community space while creating more opportunities for artists to share their work. The opening exhibition will feature ten artists working across a range of creative disciplines.
“There’s something wonderfully fitting about creating something beautiful and unexpected under pressure.” —Susan Berstler
Join Mayor Wilson, Susan Berstler, participating artists, and Somerville Arts & Culture staff for a free public ribbon cutting on Saturday, October 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. The gallery is expected to remain open for three to four months, with additional exhibitions and programs inviting the community to experience local art and reconnect with Davis Square in new ways. Explore Diamond Factory, meet the participating artists, and find upcoming programs here.

HONK! Festival Returns October 9–11
Since its founding in Somerville in 2006, the HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands has grown from a local celebration of street music into an internationally connected movement, bringing free music and community to public spaces. We are proud to support HONK!’s longstanding tradition and its volunteer organizers.
Honk! Returns on October 9–11, with lantern-making and evening performances on Friday, more than 30 street bands taking over Davis Square on Saturday, and the annual HONK! Parade traveling from Davis Square toward Harvard Square on Sunday. All events are free and open to the public.
"Since its inception, HONK! has benefitted from the support of Davis Square businesses and residents and from the City of Somerville and Somerville's Arts & Culture. We are grateful to be able to realize our belief in the importance of community gatherings in public space, and the power of street band music for social change, in such a generous and welcoming city and neighborhood. For the 21st time, we will HONK to reclaim the streets for horns, bikes and feet!" - Trudi Cohen, Honk! Organizer
This year, HONK! will include extended road closures and parking restrictions on Saturday. Please review the closure information and plan ahead when traveling to and around the festival.

PorchFest Survey - We Want Your Input!
Every May, Somerville becomes a DIY music festival, turning porches and yards into stages and the whole city into an audience. PorchFest is one of the city's most beloved traditions, and we want to make sure it stays that way.
Take this short survey about your experience—as a resident, performer, porch host, or visitor—and what matters most to you about the event. Your responses will help the City think through what's working and how PorchFest can be managed sustainably in the years ahead. All responses are anonymous.

Latin American and Caribbean Heritage
Lives Here!
Heritage lives in the languages we speak, the food we share, the music we carry, and the art we create together. During Latin American and Caribbean Heritage Month, Somerville Arts & Culture celebrates the artists, entrepreneurs, and community members whose traditions, stories, and creativity help shape our city.
Connect through language: The fall session of Intercambio is now underway, bringing participants together to practice Spanish, Portuguese, and English, share stories, and build community through cultural exchange.
Create through movement: Discover Manipulo, an interactive dance performance shaped by the audience and created by Ecuador-based dance company TALVEZ.
Celebrate through music: Look forward to Día de la Canción Criolla, celebrating Peru’s música criolla and its rich heritage through music, food, and community.
Share heritage through food: This fall at Nibble Kitchen, experience Peruvian cuisine from Krysia Villón of Chiqui’s Kitchen and Guatemalan and Mayan cuisine from Benita Ramirez of La Todosantera. Nibble partners and graduates, including Nancy Paz of Manaos Colombian Cuisine, also participate in community festivals, pop-ups, and local markets.
Each offers a meaningful way to gather, learn, and celebrate the cultures that make Somerville vibrant.

LCC Awardees Spotlight:
Writing Creaturely Advice
Have you ever tried asking a tree, a squirrel, or a ladybug for advice? What do you think they would say back? In this workshop, we’ll take on the perspectives of some of our nonhuman neighbors, learning real things about how they live and imagining what wisdom they might share with us. We’ll get to know other species (and ourselves!) while writing creatively, stretching our empathetic imaginations, and having fun.
Saturday, October 17, 12–2 p.m.
Somerville Community Growing Center
The workshop is led by local science writer Cara Giaimo, author of “Leaving the Ocean Was a Mistake: Life Advice from Sixty Sea Creatures” and “Atlas Obscura: Wild Life.” This program is supported in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Space is limited—RSVP here.
